Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging ($13-)
Misunderstood by her ancient parents, but buoyed up by the love of her cat Angus and her bessie mates the Ace Gang, Georgia struggles through life seeking out her two main desires: 1. To get a gorgeous sex-god as her boyfriend. 2. To throw the greatest 15th birthday party ever. When handsome brothers Tom and Robbie arrive at school, Georgia thinks her boyfriend dreams have been answered. But when she sees Robbie with her arch rival Lindsay, she devises a plan to show ROBBIE that she’s the mature, sophisticated girlfriend he deserves. Unfortunately Georgia’s plans - involving snogging lessons, stalking Lindsay, and dying her legs orange - don’t exactly run smoothly. Alongside her own romance problems Georgia's parents are going through a turbulent time, with the result that Georgia feels the responsibility for holding the family together rests on her shoulders. In her quest to get Robbie and keep her family from splitting, Georgia transforms from a selfish girl into a young woman who’s grown beyond the valley of the fab and into the universe of marvy.
I wasn't too excited about watching this film. There are so many teenage coming-of-age films out there I thought that if you have seen one you have probably seen them all. But of late I have been getting into a bit of English film and TV and loving it (thanks to the mostest awesome TV show ever, Skins). And then the AMAZING PR company that looks after Paramount Pictures asked if I would like to interview the two stars of the film. Then I went into excitement overdrive and HAD TO WATCH and of course I started looking up everything about the film and the stars - I had to do research as this was going to be my first ever interview. Due to unforeseen circumstances my interview was canceled but I had already RSVP'd to the screening so off I went to watch the film.
The only way this film could have worked was if the audience fell in love with the lead characters, especially Georgia and Robbie. It took all of 1min for me to fall in love with Georgia. And Robbie is totally a "sex-god" about to bloom. This film is made by the people who created the wonderful Bend it Like Beckham and they decided to make it a "real" coming of age story starring "real" teenagers as opposed to in the US where it is acceptable to use a 30yr old to play a 15yr old. The film is based on the popular teenage novels Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging and It's OK, I'm wearing really big knickers by Louise Rennison.
It is so true to form and took this 36yr old man straight back to those years and all the shenanigans that come with growing up and making a million mistakes. Georgia played by real life Georgia Groome is absolutely superb and nails this teenage Bridget Jones character perfectly. This is Georgia's first role and I hope we get to see more of her, she is just great mixing astounding comic timing and the emotions associated with being a teenager. Robbie played by Aaron Johnson is the perfect dreamboat for Georgia and is great in his role. I did find his character a little like marshmallow, all sweet and sometimes a bit sickly but his character is there to make every teenager in the cinema drool and commence stalking tactics. His acting list is quite astounding, having played the Young Eisenheim in the Illusionist and also Charlie Chaplin in Shanghai Nights as well as many more roles including the "in production" Kick Ass with Nicholas Cage. With his charming looks and that British accent I can imagine him being around for quite a while.
The rest of the cast is superb support and there isn't anyone that lets this enjoyable film down. The film is nearly worth seeing just for the cat, Angus. Georgia and her friends' dialogue is filled with hilarious Brit teen slang, and memorable lines tumble from their adolescent mouths. I just wish I could remember them now, LOL, after the film I was like I wish I had a pen, I need to write these all down. The film's English seaside town backdrop gives it a freshness, and it was largely shot on location in Brighton and Eastbourne (where it's set).
If you are going to let the kids out to watch a film these coming holidays give your permission to see this one and do yourself a favor and tag along, not only will it piss the kids off but you will get to watch a superb funny little film just as good as Bridget Jones. Worth $13- and starts tomorrow Thursday 18th September.
