Film of the year so far!!
Category: Reviews
What a smack in the face this masterpiece was. I cannot rave about this film enough. Easily makes my top 20 films of all time and hands down best film of the year so far. I was mesmerised from go to woe.
The film is copping a hiding from international critics due to its ravaging of the Bard himself, William Shakespeare. Critics are claiming it is historically inaccurate and English critics would not be loving it too much as it paints the Royal family as incestuous sluts, but isn't that the truth?
I cannot allow this film to be tarnished anymore - it does not deserve it. The film is a "what if" film and it is a rumoured take on director, Roland Emmerich's beliefs behind Shakespeare. He basically takes the old Bard by the tongue and throws him all around the room smashing him into everything. And it is no wonder the critics are revelling for a torching of Emmerich - he is "fictionally" accusing Shakespeare of being a fraud.
Here is Roland Emmerich's reasoning behind making his film and it's enough for me to be hooked into a conspiracy theory:
1. Not a single manuscript has been found in William Shakespeare's handwriting. Not even notes or correspondence.
2. Shakespeare was born to illiterate parents, and both of his children were also illiterate.
3. Shakespeare was not a member of the upper class, but wrote extensively about them with great insight.
4. The only examples of Shakespeare's handwriting are six very shaky signatures.
5. Not one of Shakespeare's poems or plays reflects an actual event in his life, including the death of his son.
6. There is no record of Shakespeare receiving any schooling, yet his level of knowledge of science and humanities is extensive.
7. Once he retired to Stratford-upon-Avon in his late forties, Shakespeare never wrote again.
8. Despite no indication that Shakespeare left England, his work exhibits an intimate knowledge of Italy.
9. The Stratford monument used to celebrate Shakespeare with a sack of grain rather than a quill.
10. Will's will makes no mention of his literary works, but does leave his second best bed as a legacy.
The masterpiece of this film is I think Shakespeare, or the real author, would have loved it. It's a film written perfectly, starring amazing acting talent, it opens like a Shakespeare play and tells a rumoured tale of Shakespeare and is a definite Shakespeare tragedy in every sense of the word. Just amazing!! It is Shakepseare!
It is a new style of film for Emmerich who is either loved or hated. He is loved by the people who get off on their large popcorn fuelled blockbusters of Independence Day, Godzilla, (my fave) The Day After Tomorrow and then my most hated (piece of shit) 2012
. His films are loathed by critics purely because they are made as rides and solely for entertainment, his films lack depth and the stuff critics salivate over. Then this film, Anonymous, should be the one they have been after but Emmerich decided to make his spectacular serious film while insulting the institute known as Shakespeare. I think it's a stroke of genius and originally thought this film would clean up at the Oscars because it deserves it but I think it will give the Academy more reason to hate him. Shame really! And the subtle usage of CGI in this film is superb and something Emmerich is unarguably a genius with. If he can make the world look like it is being destroyed then he can recreate Elizabethan England with his eyes closed.
Before I rave about the actors there are two more things that make this film. Some of the most elaborate costumes and sets I have seen in years, this film looks otherworldly and it deserves awards for its set design and costumes alone. Then there is the screenplay - one of the most cleverest and intelligent I have heard and seen for yonkers. Just brilliant.
OK - the actors in order of brilliance. Rhys Ifans - I never even knew it was him, gone are the dopey comedy type roles and replaced is one superb and mature role. Oscar nod from me. Vanessa Redgrave as Queen Elizabeth 1 with her own daughter, Joely Richardson, playing her in her younger years. Redgrave takes it to the next level in this and is mind blowing. Xavier Samuel, my all time favourite Australian actor in easily his best performance, even my guest for the evening asked me about him during the end credits. He is superb, as always, and wasn't even acting, he was the Earl of Southampton. Jamie Campbell Bower as the young version of Rhys Ifans (Earl of Oxford) is beautiful and stands out as much as Samuel, he has had a few smaller roles with the most recent being as the bleach haired evil vampire in the latest Twilight film. David Thewlis and Edward Hogg are as good as each other and bloody manipulatively evil as the Cecils. Sebastian Armesto is worthy of mention as Ben Johnson and carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, thought he was brilliant as the submissive man who is the only audience to the real writer of the amazing plays, the man who carries the secret forever.
You have to see this Shakespearean Inception - it is Shakespeare within Shakespeare within Shakespeare. Can't recommend it enough. Out this Thursday and for me an easy 10 out of 10!
