Freebies Rule
This has been the longest waiting giveaway I have had - it's been sitting on my bench for 6 weeks and I am terribly sorry to ICON - the kind people that have stacked me up with heaps of freebies to give you. No thanks to my terrible landlord who is meant to keep the internet running and left it so late the phone line was even cut off. Four weeks I had to wait, and watch oodles of TV, movies and read lots of books. I have no idea how I coped 15yrs ago without internet but it was a different world for a month.
Now I have three prize packs to giveaway each containing 3 DVDs which have 4 films between them. I have Bruce Lee My Brother, Fireball and The 18 Bronzemen I & II. That is quite some viewing from the Wu Xing Collection from ICON Home Entertainment.
My favourite of the lot is definitely Bruce Lee My Brother. It is a superbly filmed and incredibly well acted art house look at Bruce Lee prior to departing for America - it ends with him departing to become the man we all know as legend. Aarif Lee plays Bruce Lee. If you were expecting a kung fu film, you might be a tad disappointed. It only has a couple of fights in it and is more the "college years" with dating, first loves, his first jobs and his family life. It is kind of a mash up of Stand By Me, Grease & Rocky.
Aarif is superb and incredibly good looking, you can see where Lee's confidence came from that is for sure. There is many touching moments and historical relevance and the film tries to capture everything with complete accuracy. I was impressed watching photo comparisons at the end over the credits.
Definitely a great film to add to the collection. Worth 8/10.
Then there is Thai film Fireball, which is kind of cheesy and direct cross between Bloodsport (Van Dame's finest) and a game of basketball. No shit - they cross a game of basketball with fight to the death. It is pretty B grade, totally predictable but thoroughly enjoyable.
When the lead character's brother is found beaten into a coma, Tai (Preeti Barameeanat) must risk his life and fight his way to the final round of the deadly Fireball championships to avenge his brother on the court.
There is definite laugh out loud moments at the screen at how bad some of it is but seriously - if I saw this when I was a teenager it would have been the shiz!! Some great looking guys in the film that all get bloody, there is some great fight scenes and you could do worse. But a lot of people will love this style of film. Worth 6/10.
And finally there is old school The 18 Bronzemen I & II from 1976. It is some definite old styled fighting and martial arts and reminds me of a serious Monkey Magic without all the magic. It is made from "legendary" martial arts director Joseph Kuo and stars 70s Kung Fu "icons" Carter Wong and Polly Shang-Kwan.
I only watched the first one of this but have the other still to go. It was a nice old style action film about two friends who must survive a series of rigorous tests to defeat the legendary 18 Bronzemen of Shaolin before they can leave the temple. It is at times humorous but has some decent fighting in it and a great story. Worth 6/10.
Now to win these prizepacks you will need to be one of the first three people to email me the answer to this following question plus provide your postal address - no address equals excluded as I don't want to chase you for it. I do apologise but this is only valid for my Australian readers. Please allow up to a week for delivery. Best of Luck.
Question: What movie combined with basketball did I say makes the film Fireball?
