Aliens in the Attic ($10-)
I had been wanting to see this kid's film for ages - kid's films are up there with my favourite genre of films. I just find them more imaginative and simple - I will get some joyous laughter, see something fantastic and not then have to spend hours analysing the plot or the meaning behind more complex films.
This film has a super fun trailer and an amazing cast. Carter Jenkins is one of my favourite up and coming actors and mark my words - this is one kid to watch. He starred in one of my fave TV shows of recent past, Surface and also starred in films Bad News Bears and Keeping Up With the Steins. Further, he recently starred in multi award winning short film A Day's Work. Then there is Ashley Tisdale, the hysterical blonde chick from High School Musical. There is also Kevin Nealon, the whacky pot addicted councillor, Doug, from Weeds and the awesome Doris Roberts (Everyblody Loves Raymond fame) as a karatee kicking grandma.
Aliens in the Attic, co-scripted by one of the writers of Madagascar and the Academy Award-winning Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbits, is an adventure/comedy about kids on a family vacation who must fight off an attack by knee-high alien invaders with world-destroying ambitions - while the youngsters' parents remain clueless about the battle. Thanks to 20th Century Fox
The aliens are cute, all the kids are cute, the film is cute but it lacked in evil aliens - they were laughable - very cute but not creatures you would be stressing would take over your planet. I would have liked one or more aliens to be a little more scary. This film is suited for kids of all ages - from the youngest kids to the oldest the film is purely harmless and enjoyable all at the same time. I did find Carter Jenkins miscast - the film was too easy for him and he has talent so should pursue some bigger roles. His performance is fine. Doris Roberts is hysterical as a grandma being mind controlled by aliens who gets to do numerous acrobatics and kung fu fighting - it's a joy to watch. Everyone else is either cute or fine in their parts but the character who stole the show for me was Robert Hoffman - he is also being mind controlled by aliens but the comical character of his full physical body comedy is outstanding. I haven't seen physical body comedy this funny since Jim Carrey.
The CGI and effects range from some great scenes, mostly the wire work, to some poorer scenes but for a cast mainly of young people they do manage to act with the non existent characters remarkably well. It is kind of Home Alone meets ET, but in this one ET plans on taking over the planet in a comical way
It's goofy, it's predictable, it's kind of forgettable but I laughed lots and if your kids ask you to take them to this one then I wouldn't say no - I would recommend it for that reason. You will enjoy but not be rushing to add it to your collection when it's out on DVD. Worth $10-
