Yay - Sequels confirmed today!!
After muttering about how an AVATAR franchise would make sense and hinting that there could be a trilogy of AVATAR films, James Cameron has confirmed that there will be an AVATAR sequel, fueling speculation about how it might top the original.
Things we do know:
* There are two planned sequels but they won't be one continuous story, they'll be self-contained.
* They'll also follow Jake and Neytiri.
* It could take place around a different moon of Polyphemus this time, although producer Jon Landau has already hinted about exploring Pandora's interior.
* Some bloggers guess that James Cameron, famously obsessed with water, has an amazing underwater environment mapped out for Pandora.
* There are also different Na'vi tribes that call the planet their home and we never really got a sense of how intra-species politics work between the different tribes.
* Cameron confirmed he's mapped out what will happen in the sequels, although he hasn't written any scripts yet.
The good news? The sequels won't take four years to make. Cameron has said he can get them out faster than the first AVATAR.
What would you like to see for the sequel and where do you think it could head?
Thanks to Martin for passing this info on!!

Bryn - he had originally written Avatar as a trilogy idea and the only way it could work was if the first one went well, success. I think the studios would be wetting themselves for more though. If he can get them out much quicker than we will also get to see his other ideas quicker (I hope).
SHJ - Ouch - I think there was a very strong plot - Is it possible you may have meant an "original plot"? But each to their own.

I've never seen Ghandi, Amadeus, Gone With the Wind, or The Sound of Music. I feel I don't really need to.

I'm just not a fan of Richard Attenborough's style, Amadeus I was meant to see when it came out, but never did, and I suppose I probably would like it (I like Mozart's music), but it was just one of those movies everyone saw, which kinda put me off, I've seen the first fifteen mins of Gone with the Wind and that was quite enough thank you, and as for The Sound of Music ... I'd rather have my fingernails pulled

Jason, i did see Titantic and Australia, and countless other blockbusters for the sake of the publicity ie: Armageddon, Pearl Harbour, Lord Of The Rings, Transformers
now if Avatar had James McAvoy in it you know i would have been there opening night

Gone with the Wind is just a classic piece of film making - you probs wouldn't like it as it was kind of the Titanic of the time
The Sound of Music I just grew up with and have seen it probably 30 or more times - it used to always be on around Xmas and mum and I would watch it.
Ghandi - heart wrenching - but can't remember it that much.
ET - GOLD!!!!

Im stoked at the idea of sequels, and I like your idea of tribe politics. Theres a book series I like, 'Last dragon lord' by Joanne Bertin. In it, theres a clan that has a horror of losing their 'clan braid' a long lock of hair they grow for life and never cut. I instantly thought of that idea when I saw Avatar - the long braid with the tendrils they use to connect to beasts and Ehwya. (shit, did I spell it right? Im sure you get me) Im saying that for them, the worst possible thing would be to have the braid cut. Perhaps it happens in clan wars? Now Jake is like their King, riding the Last Shadow and all.....Maybe some other clan leader would take offense to that?
Either way I think Im gonna have to put it in fan fiction....

I am very curious to see where James Cameron will take it - it's a big deal for him to make a sequal and he never really stuffs up plus he has to up the ante - so I have my fingers crossed and am confident it will be more amazing than the first one. Think Terminator to Terminator 2 - he knocked it out of the park.
My parents drove 3hrs to watch Avatar for the second time in 3D and then three hours back - I was so proud
