Rotten Tomatoes announces this morning as does The Today Show!
While it may still be chasing his sinking ship (haha, great pun) in worldwide grosses and sitting at number 7 in the US all-time top 10, James Cameron's Avatar has officially passed his own Titanic to become the highest grossing film ever at the Australian box office.
In just four weeks of release the sci-fi epic has taken $63 million in Australia, sailing past Titanic's overall total of $57 million to become the biggest movie of all-time Down Under. Avatar leads Titanic, Shrek 2 ($50 million), The Return of the King ($49 million) and Crocodile Dundee ($47 million) in non-inflation adjusted earnings.
Can it repeat the feat elsewhere? With only minimal drop-off and a sustained box-office momentum through the New Year it's not impossible. Avatar is currently trailing Titanic in worldwide grosses ($1.3 billion to $1.8 billion) and has racked up just over $429 million domestically in the US to Titanic's $600 million; while it should comfortably pass The Phantom Menace, E.T. , Shrek 2 and Star Wars within a couple of weeks. If it manages to surpass The Dark Knight ($533 million US), things could get interesting indeed.
Add to the fact the DVD sales yet to come and the addition of merchandise and the game sales this film has probably made more money than Australia this year
I couldn't be happier - woot!!!

Honestly, this is my first blockbuster movie, since I returned to hometown and I glad it hit big in around the world.
By the way, it's awesome to see you all again

Amy - that does suck. The only way to TRULY appreciate this film is in 3D and that can be unnerving at the best of time. IT even took me a few minutes to get used to the difference - take vomit bags and head to Imax - conquer that fear
Wilson - that's where you went. I thought your computer had died or you gave up. I wrote to the other person writing on youyr site but got no answer. I even thought you were sick or something

I really enjoyed this film, even though I didn't think it needed a white male (heterosexual) hero to prove its point on race. The story could have been told from the perspective of Neytiri or something - it would have been great if they had been trying to understand the human mentality instead of the other way around. But I suppose mainstream audiences are slow-developing enough to identify with the token white American male (with an Aussie accent, hehe) and it's a more effective way of introducing them to something vaguely like post-colonial theory.
Just wanted to say to Wilson: Wow, how amazing to go to Vietnam for charity work! It must have been quite an experience?

I know Cameron is not always a maker or all male leads - he did a wonderful thing with Sigourney Weaver and I nearly wet myself with excitement upon hearing she was going to be in another JC sci fi. So cool!! LOVE HER
Wilson - I am so jealous of your charity work and would love to do something like that if only I had the money
