Welcome to Salty Popcorn - my site dedicated to expressing my opinion on films. Most of the reviews I read in the paper make me angry that they are either all so negative or I completely disagree with them. So now it's my turn. I hope you enjoy it and if you do sign up for updates on the left hand side. Thanks for stopping in!! PLEASE NOTE: My scoring of films is now based on an "Out of 10" score. Titanic will sink in the Next 2 Weeks - the Top 50 Highest Grossing Films of All Time

Below is listed the Top 50 highest grossing films of all time in unadjusted figures. It should be noted that Avatar is only about 50mil away from taking the lead from longstanding James Cameron film Titanic. Not only does this make James Cameron the most bankable director on the planet but means the guy has made a bloody fortune for various studios, mainly FOX.

Titanic, Leonardo DiCaprio

I do wish him and the films Avatar and Titanic all the best a HUGE congratulations. It will be sad to see Leo knocked from the top spot but he can come back to number one - especially when Cameron rereleases Titanic in 3D in the very near future Can't wait to see it on the big screen again.

Amy - and they are only US figures. International dollars throw them into the billions
I am in the same industry but I chose the wrong bloody department

Well, Jason. It's about time to bid our farewell to Titanic and welcoming the newcomer ---> Avatar...

Honestly, i presumed that the grossing profit for Avatar will be surpassed $650,000,000! Let's see if my prediction is right or not...

Wilson - this is only US figures - once you add international sales they are both are well over 1BIL.

Thanks for the comment!!

I'm so happy to see Titanic ...sink from the top of the film charts (sorry that was a really bad joke but I couldn't resist).

Not a fan of Titanic. LOVED Avatar. So I'm quite pleased.

If any film is going to do it I am happy it is Avatar. Titanic was my favourite film until I saw Avatar - although they are pretty equal to me.

I just love Leo and I got to screen Titanic in 70mm and the mejesty of it and beauty and the whole package still gives me chills.

Agreed with both of you here, Silverautumn and Jason.

To be honest, since these two mega blockbusters are "the lovely children" of James Cameron, I bet Cameron would didn't mind, if Avatar is blasting off the Titanic...lol

After all, Cameron is the biggest winner in this situation.

That is a rather curious, and yet oddly soul-destroying list of movies: high concept, sequels, franchises, also mostly science fiction and fantasy ... strange, yet not surprising.

All blockbusters - it's what the masses want and pay for - popcorn films. It puts the bums on seats.

Arty films and films with genuine amazing plots are for cool people

Jason, I know, sad but true ... #48 on the list has a lot to answer for.

Hey here's an interesting comparative list of movies with the most tickets sold (very different from box office, since the reason Avatar is soaring so quickly is due to inflation and specifically the added cost to the ticket of the 3D glasses). Avatar has only sold 70,000,000 tickets so far ... it could still beat Gone with the Wind though.

# 1. Gone With the Wind - 202,044,600

# 2. Star Wars -178,119,600

# 3. The Sound of Music - 142,415,400

# 4. ET: The Extra-Terrestrial - 141,854,300

# 5. The Ten Commandments - 131,000,000

# 6. Titanic - 128,345,900

# 7. Jaws - 128,078,800

# 8. Doctor Zhivago -124,135,500

# 9. The Exorcist - 110,568,700

# 10. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - 109,000,000

# 11. 101 Dalmatians - 99,917,300

# 12. The Empire Strikes Back - 98,180,600

# 13. Ben-Hur - 98,000,000

# 14. Return of the Jedi -94,059,400

# 15. The Sting - 89,142,900

# 16. Raiders of the Lost Ark - 88,141,900

# 17. Jurassic Park - 86,205,800

# 18. The Graduate - 85,571,400

# 19. Star Wars: Episode I - 84,825,800

# 20. Fantasia - 83,043,500

Yay Jaws - thanks for the adjusted list Bryn - I knew Gone with the Wind was number 1 - but I do like the rest - except number 19

Steven Spielberg either wrote, directed or produced four of them.
George Lucas either wrote, directed or produced five of them.
Interestingly it's nearly a half-half split with 9 of them produced 1940-1970, the other half produced between since then.

Hi Jason,

All of those films are male-dominated. Male characters, male directors, male producers. It's quite sickening, really.

Very true PMC - and I agree with you excpet for the sickening part. It's just the way it is. More of the films are children oriented and made for children, who caves in and takes their children to those films, parents, more than likely the mums or fathers for an action film. A lot of them also have incredibly good looking male leads - who do you think the biggest patrons to those films were? Females Who makes the "couples" decision on what film to see? Females.
It should be noted that the only film I could find - did not look them all up - that was directed by a lady was a shared direction with a man. Vicky Jenson shared direction with Andrew Adamson on Shrek while Kelly Asbury shared it with him on Shrek 2. It should be noted though that most of Steven Spielberg's films are produced by a lady - Kathleen Kenedy. Hope this helps relieve your annoyance.

Hi Jason,

I would like there to be a balance between male and female perspectives. Men may have many stories to tell, and they may be very interesting indeed, but so do women, and they are barely represented in this list!

Women may account for a large amount of movie ticket sales, but then again it's not like they have a choice - either watch things from a male perspective or barely watch anything at all!

If we look at all of the top 10 films, for example, the lead character is always male, there are a lot more male characters than female, and the female's most important function is to serve as the love object. Oh, and the predominant genre is action adventure, with millions of dollars being spent on special effects.

I do find that sickening. Many women in Hollywood have complained that there is a scarcity of complex, meaty roles for women there - they play romantic interests until they reach a certain age, and then they become mothers. Obviously that is a gross simplification, however it's sadly potent a generalisation.

I look forward to it going from 'the way it is' to 'the way it was'!

Keep in mind though PMC - it isn't a list of the best films ever it is a list of the biggest selling films ever and people like the big budget action, far removed from society films to spend their money on.

Look at Oscars this year - Avatar (which has made over $600000000 in the US alone) is up for best pic and so is Katherine Bigelow for her super superb film The Hurt Locker (which has made $19000000 only in the US). It looks like Hurt Locker may beat Avatar for the gong as it is brilliant film making.

There are more and more female lead parts and directors becoming evident daily - just look at Meryl Steep - she can out act any man on this planet. Hell she could play most male lead parts better than a man

I look forward to it going from 'the way it is' to 'the way it was'!
- nicely put

Kathryn Bigelow also made Point Break - one of my fave action flicks!

Kathryn also made Blue Steel which was boring, and Strange Days which was mostly crap.
