I LOVE YOU JAMES CAMERON

I am so excited - the first trailer for Avatar is out and a HD version is attached to this article. If it appears squashed up in the arrticle - click on the bottom right icons of the video window - it will increase to full size or allow you adjust the size.
I don't know how long it will last online as there are more people hunting the trailer down to remove it than actually worked on the film. This trailer is F**KING AMAZING. Just what I was hoping for JC - YOU RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!
I am going to the premiere of 15min's of 3D footage this afternoon and will have a mini review up tonight or early morning. I never knew a film could be as exciting as actually having a world premiere of 15min's of it's actual footage.
Avatar is set during the 22nd century on a small moon called Pandora, which orbits a gas giant, and is inhabited by the tribal Na'vi, ten foot blue humanoids that are peaceful unless attacked. Humans cannot breathe Pandoran air, so they genetically engineer human/Na'vi hybrids known as Avatars that can be controlled via a mental link. A paralyzed Marine named Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) volunteers to exist as an Avatar on Pandora, falling in love with a Na'vi princess and becoming caught up in the conflict between her people and the human military that is consuming their world.

I respect James Cameron from a technical point of view, and love his work in the Terminator and Alien franchises, but beyond that I think his proverbial Midas touch is greatly exaggerated.

Great comment and worthy of debate
I am JC biased because he is my favourite director and he has made 3 of my all time favourite films (Titanic, Aliens and T2) so my judgement is already clouded however I can't honestly judge my decision on a 3hr film from a 2min and 6 sec trailer. There is so much more to it.
I got to watch 20min of footage last night at the Avatar previews and it BLEW me away - the ideas and action are not shown enough in the trailer.
Star Wars is pure science fiction - sure it has elements that could be classed as fanstasy but fiction is someone's fantasy. I Wiki'd Sci Fi and this is what it terms science fiction as:
Science fiction is a genre of fiction. It differs from fantasy in that, within the context of the story, its imaginary elements are largely possible within scientifically-established or scientifically-postulated laws of nature (though some elements in a story might still be pure imaginative speculation). Exploring the consequences of such differences is the traditional purpose of science fiction, making it a "literature of ideas". Science fiction is largely based on writing entertainingly and rationally about alternate possibilities in settings that are contrary to known reality.
These may include:
A setting in the future, in alternative timelines, or in a historical past that contradicts known facts of history or the archeological record
A setting in outer space, on other worlds, or involving aliens.
Stories that involve technology or scientific principles that contradict known laws of nature.
Stories that involve discovery or application of new scientific principles, such as time travel or psionics, or new technology, such as nanotechnology, faster-than-light travel or robots, or of new and different political or social systems (e.g., a dystopia, or a situation where organized society has collapsed)
From this I can deduct it ticks nearly every box, aliens, future, other worlds, space travel, new technologies etc.
There definately are elements that have a World of Warcraft vibe - the scene in the trailer that flies through floating land masses. But that being said Lord of The Rings could be claimed as a rip off of WOW - ir vica versa - I can't now accuse every film that is made in NZ of being WOW stylised. Although from the footage we saw last night the forest does come alive at night in all shades of blue and phospheresence - which can be scene in one of the places on WOW - I can't remember its name.
Sure, the Na'vi maybe space elves but they are 10ft tool and fly on dragon like creatures - we can't give elves the sole ownership to any one author - they are a mystical being from our folklore and fiction.
There is much science in the film - once on the planet we get to see Sam Worthington in a pod like thing being transformed into (either the mind or in whole) of the Na'vi he becomes.
To me Cameron's point is - it is a sci fi, and even sci fi fantasy of some form of originality that has been lacking from film for quite a while - it is something that I and millions of people no doubt miss and look forward to seeing.
I just hope his "Midas" touch is not overly exaggerated and when you get to see it your mind gets changed. Let me know what you think come December.
Thanks for the great comment!!
