From Boardgame to Massive Action Film
Peter Berg produces and directs Battleship, an epic-scaled action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Inspired by Hasbro's classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper's fiance; Alexander Skarsgard as Hopper's older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper's crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone's superior (and Sam's father), Admiral Shane.
This film should have been a dud - it is seriously inspired and made by Hasbro that originally came up with the board game of same name yonkers ago - people laughed and pondered how it was possible when the idea had its inception - but the film was remarkably edge of your seat enjoyment.
It never overly takes itself seriously at doing more than what it is - a popcorn blockbuster ride of a film. Critics will mostly hate it and the majority of the ridiculous things that happen but this was the joy for me. It was a love child between Independence Day and Transformers and it is huge. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was exactly what I was expecting and more. It is as good as a Transformers film so if you like Michael Bay you will be in heaven.
The special effects are mind blowing with explosions everywhere, spaceships, big battles and did I mention explosions? I honestly think Michael Bay will now become best buddies with director Peter Berg (The Kingdom and Hancock) - it is completely influenced by Bay's work and I think hit it big and made a film as good as a Transformer's film.
The acting is this is what you would expect but no one sucked - I am having a very recent crush on Taylor Kitsch and he is great in this and I see a new generation of action hero taking centre stage and with this, John Carter and the abundance of his other films on the way this guy is going to be huge and with that body and face I can live with it
Now this is also Rihanna's first foray into acting and..... she wasn't woeful - firstly they were smart in not giving her heaps of lines so she didn't have to remember them all but the lines she has she delivers satisfactorily and her being all butch and handling weaponry with ease was a great first role for her - it actually makes her quite sexy for me.
Liam Neeson is only in it briefly but he appears to be popping up in every second film of late and he adds the strength required of an Admiral and the father of the "lead" lady played by Brooklyn Decker (Just Go With It) who keeps the action going on land with her disabled Marine friend. I cannot locate the name of her on-land Marine friend but I loved him - with no legs he took on the Aliens in hand to hand battle and kicked ass
OK - the film is silly, the idea is ludicrous but the film is amazing and will fill cinemas, win no awards (ok maybe for Special Effects) and make people cheer - there are quite a few scenes that are over the top and possible vomit worthy but this is part of the joy of the film and if you don't embrace its silliness you will loathe it - it was just what I wanted to see when I viewed it made my arvo with it's silliness, amazing effects and powerful sound. Aim for the biggest cinema you can when you see it and ensure it has an amazing sound system so your ears bleed. Worth 8 out of 10 for me.

Kitsch seems to in high demand at present and I thought he was reasonably decent in John Carter; the same here given the quality of his lines. But it'll be a cold day in hell if Decker ever makes it as a star. She's as shallow and obligatory a blonde as I've ever seen in a film.

Hahahaha - this cracked me up Dave - nice! I am really looking forward to Savages with Kitsch - this will be his credible role - thanks to Oliver Stone
Thanks for the comment - don't get as many these days - I suppose I don't leave as many as I used to either - thank you million hour weeks at work
