Justin Bieber: Never Say Never is the inspiring true story and rare inside look at the rise of Justin from street performer in the small town of Stratford, Ontario to internet phenomenon to global super star culminating with a dream sold out show at the famed Madison Square Garden in 3-D.
I know some of my friends will bag me out for this and after watching the film last night to a packed Sydney Preview I was trying to find ways to mark this film down. And then I thought hang on - that is what this country and after reading IMDB, the US, is mainly all about - it's the tall poppy syndrome in full action for Justin Bieber. Here is a kid who has worked his ass off pretty much since he was born and became an internet sensation and now a world class entertainer and the majority of the world thinks it's the coolest thing to do to hate him because hey, that's a trend and also because I believe most of us are jealous that he succeeded through luck and determination where most of us have not.
Prior to the film I was not a huge fan of his music - I thought he was a cute kid and could turn into a hot young man when he goes through puberty but after watching the film I not only like him and have a lot of respect for him and just as much for his team but I had that bloody Baby song stuck in my head all night - this might also have a lot to do with Paul, from Pop Is Not Dead (on Orble) singing it at the conclusion of the film and then sending me the link to the 500MILLION hit film clip on You Tube. I do like the song Somebody to Love he sung with Usher and there was one other I had never heard of but generally his music is tween music - it is borderline romantic Wiggle tunes for the pre teen market. But what he does for the market he utilises is bloody sensational and when he does go through puberty and his voice changes is the test that I am looking forward to. I have every confidence he will easily move from child star to young adult star and as this film tries to highlight - it is quite possible he could be one of the biggest and longest running entertainers of all time. This is of course unless he jumps into a world of drugs and sex tapes and debauchery and goes haywire. Buth then, hey, this will no doubt be just as entertaining - but I hope not because he is one nice kid with great talent and passion.
The success of Justin is a combo of many things, firstly his unnatural ability and need to perform ever since he was a tiny tot and then the success of making a few You Tube videos for his family where one turned into the NUMBER 1 most viewed video on You Tube of all time with over half a billion views. His rise also timed itself perfectly with the phenomenon of social media - as his songs were gaining popularity on You Tube, Twitter and Facebook were also taking over the world and this spread like wildfire all the way to his discovery in the industry by now manager Scooter Braun. He worked his butt off to get Bieber into the industry and managed to do it with the help of HUGE fan and now nearly family of Justin's, Usher. What has happened after that is the grindwheel known as Justin Bieber and the kid is unstoppable.
The film is successfully made with a clearly defined storyline that starts and and ends telling a great story. It is about the use of social media to turn someone into an out-of-this-world success to the likes of Madonna and Michael Jackson purely based on record sales and the ability to sell out over 80 concerts including selling out Madison Square Garden in 22minutes. It tells the tale in a lead up of how many days until the MSG concert while flashing back on his life and interspersing images of his childhood. One of the things that is so adorable about the B is the family and people he surrounds himself with - they are all amazing and the love from his grandfather had a little tear in my eye. The pride on his family's faces is enough to make this film a perfect feel good movie for one and all but then throw in the crew on the road with him who have become family and I wanted to be on tour with them - everyone around him is shown as a family styled person who would all die for him - I suppose deep down he is financially making them all wealthy but the film doesn't show this - it shows people who all love him.
Then add to the film his tween and teen and occasional adult fans and you have all the comedy this film needs. The obsessive nature and serial killer styled love these people have for him is hysterical - they all believe they own him. It supplied endless tears of laughter throughout the film.
The film will not be for everybody - most adults will just dislike or hate it out of principal and 80% of males will hate it pretty much for the same reason as it wouldn't be cool to like him. If you look on Twitter many teenage boys have embraced the trend of Bieber Hating, but honestly, they are idiots who should put that passion into bettering their own lives. But if you are female chances are you will have a little soft spot for the B and if you are like Paul and myself you just won't care and will appreciate talent for talent's sake.
Love him or hate him he is successful and he deserves his success because he has worked for it. The film loses a point because he still has a way to go and I hope he makes it. It also loses said point because him and Miley Cyrus doing a duet together looks like mother and son hitting on each other. Points to Bieber for copping a feel though
It also loses the point because Jaden Smith thinks he is way too good - he needs to be brought down a tiny little notch
It is releasing on 7th April in Australia and enjoy it in 3D - but ONLY concert footage is in 3D - the rest is standard.
