Welcome to Salty Popcorn - my site dedicated to expressing my opinion on films. Most of the reviews I read in the paper make me angry that they are either all so negative or I completely disagree with them. So now it's my turn. I hope you enjoy it and if you do sign up for updates on the left hand side. Thanks for stopping in!! Also, be sure to check out my other blogs www.sydneytable.com and http://www.orble.com/total-randomness/ PLEASE NOTE: My scoring of films is now based on an "Out of 10" score. Bruno ($14-)

I am surprised to say this but I just absolutely loved this movie - it was f'n hysterical. I seriously had tears of laughter as did my partner-in-viewing Jack who is very much a heterosexual.

I laughed when I saw Borat but spent more time cringing and holding back bile, but this one, while I spent a lot of time cringing at the mess he gets himself into, and at disbelief at how far Cohen is willing to go, I found it much more stomachable. However this film is definatley not for everyone. If you do not mind seeing a) rednecks b) fashionistas c) celebrities d) terrorists e) a few religious folk and many more being insulted or shown to the world at how stupid and narrow minded they are. If you have no issue with a danicing penis that can talk and if you can get by watching two grown men strapped together in bondage gear while hobbling through an anti gay rally then this one is for you.

Bruno and Cute Child Accesory
Bruno and Cute Child Accesory

Bruno is a fictional gay Austrian fashion reporter portrayed by British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, who first appeared making out with a guy during short sketches on The Paramount Comedy Channel in 1998, before reappearing on Da Ali G Show. Following the success of Ali G Indahouse and Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, Universal Studios acquired the rights to make a Bruno film. From the creator of Borat he now brings you Bruno.

Bruno, who has no known surname, is a homosexual character claiming to be a reporter from an Austrian television station and interviews unsuspecting guests about topics such as fashion, entertainment, celebrities and homosexuality, with an emphasis on the last subject as each interview progresses. All Bruno wants is to be famous and he tries everything his small brain sees to get there. He supports a charity and swaps an Ipod for a baby in Africa, he tries to get kidnapped by terrorists in the Middle East as they will make a hostage video that the world will see on the news. But my favourite is that he decides the final way to get famous is to become straight like Hollywood's biggest striaght actors, Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Kevin Spacey

I recently read somewhere from someone I believe to be a narrow minded bigot:

And gays wonder why they get a bad rap - well its because of their behaviour. If they just acted like normal dudes then Cohen's Bruno character could not exist.

I act like a normal dude, whatever normal is, yet he still exists - their goes that theory. Besides I do not consider myself someone who gets a bad rap - I like to think of myself of just another member of the population - who I sleep with is nothing more than that. What you make of it is your issue.

Well I say boo to you - it is not people like Bruno, who is taking the piss, that gives us a bad wrap, it's narrow minded ignorant people like yourself that assume we all wear pink tutus and slut ourselves on Oxford Street.

The entire character of Bruno makes fun of people with limited life knowledge and narrow minded stupidity. Bruno not only takes the piss out of every person who takes offence to homosexuals, he also gives it to people who think it is an abomination and run seminars or religious "ungay" training. These people believe you should avoid Sinead Occonor, The Village People and Indigo Girls if you want to remain straight. Haha. But one step further he is taking the piss of what people perceive with their generalisations of "gay". Sure he is a total shock jock that wants you squirming - I am sure he gets off on it. But he is incredibly intelligent and is the Micheal Moore of the world if he had a wicked sense of humor.

Bruno Baby Bees
Bruno Baby Bees

In one scene Bruno is casting to do a television commercial with young children and he asks the parents if their children would be ok to do certain things. These are not actors he is speaking to by the way and parents agreed to the following. One woman agrees her 30pound child can lose 10pounds in one week because the mum will do "whatever it takes", another father said his son is fine around burning phospherous, and another parent said that he could definately use her child in a speeding car scene with no restraints - Bruno even reiterates "of course seatbelts are unneccesary, we are only doing a high speed scene, it's not as if anyone could get hurt" - the parent ok's this.

Trivia thanks to IMDB:
1) In October 2006, entertainment blog website Defamer.com jokingly reported the title would be "Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt". Numerous websites around the world - including IMDb - reported this to be the actual working title.
2) Originally got a NC-17 rating from the MPAA, but after Sacha Baron Cohen re-edited it it received an R.
3) Sacha Baron Cohen worked out, shaved all of his body hair and got his hair done in order to be Bruno.
4) A scene which played a prank on La Toya Jackson was hastily cut from the theatrical release due to the then-raging public outcry over the unexpected death at age 50 of Michael Jackson.

I asked my friend Jack to text me a few sentences on his thoughts so I could get a straight person's opinion and this is what he said:

Bruno was hysterical, by far the funniest of Sacha's characters. Although I cringed at some things the majority of the film I was holding my sides from exploding. $14- is my verdict.

The two middle aged ladies behind me that had to put up with my hysterics quoted "that was bloody funny".

By these two comments I can see it is taken as witty intelligent shocking humor and not a "fag film".

I recommend this to no one - I comment I loved it. The film is definately not for everyone but for those that think they would enjoy it make sure you pee before you go in or you may wet your seat. Worth $14- and out as of today in Australia. Thanks to Hoyts Chatswood Westfield for the free tickets

(Note - I'm not following u around Morgan - you just seem to be in the posts I go for)

G'day Jason

As a straight guy, I enjoyed your article a lot as it raises a lot of interesting issues - and tho I don't really go for gay films (as it's not my thing), I'm tempted to see this one.

You raise some complicated issues which I'd like to discuss, if that's OK - if not, please delete this post - I won't be offended.

I'll first state my position so you know where I'm coming from.

I've got no animosity for gays at all. It's as you say IMO - "who I sleep with is no concern of yours."

I know gay people contribute to our society just like everyone else - more perhaps per/capita? (I know plenty of deadshits who've never done a thing for anybody - and none of them are gay.) From my non-gay perspective - it seems most gay people are really motivated and sucessful at what they do.

I knew a couple of gay women who are totally superior human beings. In their spare time they used to door-knock for women's shelters and for services for kids etc.

And that brings me to my point - and I'm not attributing blame here - just a problem that exists.

These two girls did all these good things and 'gay' was never mentioned. In other words, all the people they spoke to who contributed money to the causes and admired the 2 girls for their selfless dedication, DIDN'T know they were gay. Gay didn't come into it.

But, when they went off partying at the mardi gra - etc, they advertised they were gay - indeed, that's the point of the mardi gra.

The problem with that, is that the public only then see 'Gay' in sexual terms, not in 'door-knocking' terms.

Gay men are associated with worked bodies and G -strings. That's the commercial image they show - and now at every opportunity.

So from the public's perspective, accepting 'Gay' men is accepting men being sexual, acting sexually and dressing sexually. Erroneous - but that's the image we get. And as a lot of peeps are hetro, they don't like that.

You said - "I recently read somewhere from someone I believe to be a narrow minded bigot:

And gays wonder why they get a bad rap - well its because of their behaviour. If they just acted like normal dudes then Cohen's Bruno character could not exist.

That's where it comes from, I think. And he's got a point. It's the sexual side that's being cashed in on there, and if the gays in the movie weren't sexual, then they'd be 'normal' and the "character would not exist."

Hetros only see their sexual side, and so resentment grows. I've felt the same thing many a time when I've had homosexuality 'thrust upon me" - (sorry about that) and I've reacted strongly - as I would if I had a stranger's hetro-sexuality thrust upon me. It's not so much the gay thing, it's the sexuality thing, and the gay part just makes it worse. That makes me sound like a prude (which you would laugh at if you knew me.) I love sex and women and it's a huge part of my life, but if I'm in a bookshop somewhere perusing the racks, or sitting out in a field having a thing with Kali - and a woman came up I didn't know and started cracking all over me, or getting it on with a bloke right next to me, I'd get pissed!

I'm not for a minute saying that all gay people do that - but there's a case in saying that there is more gay (or seems to be more) sexuality in public than hetro - for eg - there's no hetro parade where mixed sexes show their sexuality. Granted, there are holes in that argument, but a good percentage of teh public would not agree.

In saying that, the right-wing evangelicals are a nasty lot IMO and deserve to cop it as much as is humanly possible. I would rather the streets were full of black leather, chains and huge dildoes than have their sanctimonious, self-righteous rule.

But wouldn't it be better if the public's first impression of gays was more representative of 'real gays.' It's there if you want to see it, sure enough, but the continuous sexualisation of it tends to push people away.

Perhaps, the small percentage of gays who are joyfully expressing their new freedom through sexuality, are in fact, making it harder for the majority of gay people who do not publicly express their sexuality, to be accepted?

I agree, narrow minded biggot, I expressed my concerns with her on her blog, friki do gooder god lovers, and another one appears hear, Jesus would not approve, I love how you havent even seen the movie, but you know it should be banned, where do you people come from, the 1940s? Get a life, get a partner or something, some trying to censor the world because your a prude

Woo hoo!!! Can't wait to see this movie. The smh review of it said that it was too tame compared to Borat, but I expect I'll prefer Bruno anyway. I run into many more homophobes than I do anti-Semites, so it'll be far more satisfying to see those kinds of people openly mocked. And as for mocking fashionistas? I can take it.

Hahaha I expect Jesus Would Not Approve is taking the piss. Check out his blog, it's hysterical!

Great review Jason, love the new banner too.

i just saw Bruno, and i laughed my arse off . . . i have never seen homophobes so brilliantly put in their place and exposed . . . well done Sacha!

its also a satire of celebrity and the relentless pursuit of fame . . . it takes so many deliciously constructed stabs at American "values"

Hazius, you can follow me around if you like

the reason you only ever see gay people when they are flaunting their sexuality is because the media loves stereotypes, and the public loves "sex scandals", there is a morbid curiousity with the sex lives of gay people perpetuated by consumers and the media

i regularly go to mardi gras and i dont find it overtly sexual, it is a fashion and arts extravaganza, the floats are full of colourful design and costuming, there is dance and music, and people of all shapes and sizes promoting tolerance and diversity

it is usually run on the hottest day of the year, in the afternoon, so many people have skimpy outfits, but the media only ever splices together a couple of images of a guy in bum-less leather chaps and a dyke on a bike with no shirt for their news wrap-ups . . . where is the footage of the thousands of other types of gay people who attend?

its more about freedom of expression and showing off the shackles of social norms

just my two cents worth

I'm afraid that most men are not rampant homosexual marijuana addicts... sorry to spoil your theory.

Hazius - I thank you for your amazing thoughts on the matter and I have to say I agree with most of it. I would never delete your comment - it is good to receive rational arguments and comments.

The media does sensationalise and I have been to Mardi Gras plenty of times and at times I have felt slightly uncomfortable at some of the extreme people. But that being said I have also been to music festivals and nightclubs and have also felt uncomfortable at the overtly sexual display of every type of couple. And believe it or not I am probably more of a prude than yourself - although I have a long way to go to achieve Sainthood status like your fine lesbian friends.

I see how your comment on my quote makes sense when presented rationally and not in spite - you looked at it intelligently and from your side of the argument I agree to an extent. I just see that there are extremes to everything - you just get the homosexual community's on TV once a year and the cameras zoom in for the "best" shot.

The only problem with the public seeing "gays" as non sensationalised beings is that you see it every day - they are everywhere and without Mardi Gras and mindless bigots would just be that - everyday people.

As for the right wing evangalists they are bloody crazy - Aimee - you should chat to them, they seem like your people.

But I digress - I thank you again for a good rational argument and constructive comments.

I found it much tamer than Borat also but there were a few times I would put my head in hands saying "I can't believe he is doing this". He undresses in a bedroom trying to do a sex tape while interviewing US Presidential Candidate Ron Paul because he thinks it's RuPaul - bloody hysterical.

Thanks re the banner - I a redoing them all.

Yay Morgan - I thought you would get a kick out of it. How funny is the end fight game thing. I was hurting with laughter at the people's expressions.

Your two cents worth are very well thought and expressed - I wish I had worded it like that

its more about freedom of expression and showing off the shackles of social norms
- brilliant.

I suppose a lot of gay people cannot show effection or feel uncomfortable showing same sex effection in public so somehow it gets bottled up for a once a year day of Pride.

Aimee Dent - thanks for keeping the balance of so many nice people on Orble. There has to be one evil person every few hundred nice people.

You are a lot like Bruno - overly sensationalising everything you have written to get comments is a nice move. You thrive similarly to Bruno on the shock values of your beliefs - I thank you for this. It is entertaining and good to know these people exist so I can steer clear.

What I don't thank you for is trying to insult me for an opinion. Unlike the other people on here with differing opinions you took a 12yr old school girl bitch approach in trying to tare me down. And you're a counsellor. Haha

It was a very difficult time overcoming a 15yr marijuana addiction and an accomplishment I am proud of. You bring joy to recovering drug and alcohol addicts with your evil taunting of the battles they have faced. It drives them more into doing what they need to.

Rampant - please I haven't had sex in two years but now I am thinking of kicking back and busting out my old bucket bong while watching some gay porn in honor of you.

I value your right to an opinion but if you care to comment on my site could you try and use intelligence instead of schoolyard insults - I got that enough in school.

Hi Jason!
I haven't seen the movie but I have seen Ali G and some other characters played by Sacha Baron Cohen. He IS funny...there's no denying that.(Well, unless somebody wants to)

The reason I'm commenting at all, is to say congratulations on kicking a 15 year marijuana habit! I know what a huge life change it is. When I gave it up I didn't think anything would be truly funny again.Thank God I was wrong!

I was addicted to pot for 12 years. It was the first thing I did on waking, and every hour after that until right before bed.It wasn't until I had spent nearly 60 thousand dollars on my habit and lost all ability to carry on an intelligent conversation, that I took the necessary steps and stopped.

Anyhoo, just wanted to say congrats and take care!
I understand the way things have been going on Orble lately...that you may not really be Jason and you may never have had a drug problem and I may be just getting sucked in.
I choose to believe, however, that you ARE who you say you are and that you're genuine...so I'm going to go with that. It's what I've done with everyone else...even the posers.
Life goes on.

Hi Jason,

Thanks for your kind words and thought-provoking reply. (And for your reply also, Morgan - whom I'm now following at a wary distance.....)

They both gave me more insight into the issues and made me think about them from a new perspective. I realised that you're right, in that it's the media coverage and focus on the sexual side that is the problem for me. As you both pointed out, the media always go for the extreme, shocking moments etc - and though I attempted to be objective in my rationale, I realised that I hadn't considered 'that' at all - which is hypercritical (and subjective), in that I am well-aware of their bullshit when it comes to everything else.

Speaking of bullshit, Aimee? - you and I have something in common. Christianity has taught us both to hate. They have taught you to hate objective reasoning, people who are different, homosexuals, witches, non-Christians, marijuana etc.

And ironically, they taught me (a baptised christian) to hate Christianity - from a very early age.

As I am no longer a Christian and don't have to forgive anybody, the issue of hatred presents no spiritual problems for me.

But don't you ever consider that your hatred and intolerance goes against every teaching of Jesus? - turning the other cheek, forgiveness, understanding, compassion? They must be words you recite every week and yet you've never discerned their meaning . .

You are only one peg above Adrian2 - who IMO is the real deal. In my days of hard drugs that are now way behind me, I met people like that all the time. They never seemed to handle it well though, and became worse when they kicked it. What's your excuse, Aimee?

You showed your true character and ignorance when you attacked Jason with his personal details - and everyone but you knows it. He had the guts and confidence in himself to reveal those intimate parts of his life, which is something I doubt you'll ever really understand.

. . . because you would never, never, ever reveal any of your vulnerablities, would you? You know what they are and you think of them often . .
But unless you profoundly change the way you think, you will never have the fortitude or deep confidence in yourself to ever admit fault - and will probably maintain your artificial puritan, perfectness until the end of your days.
