Welcome to Salty Popcorn - my site dedicated to expressing my opinion on films. Most of the reviews I read in the paper make me angry that they are either all so negative or I completely disagree with them. So now it's my turn. I hope you enjoy it and if you do sign up for updates on the left hand side. Thanks for stopping in!! PLEASE NOTE: I rate my films different from the standard 5 star approach. As I work in the cinema industry I am aware that the most expensive general admission ticket is $17-. My rating of a film is based on what I think the ticket is worth in a dollar amount up to $17- (a perfect film). If I think a film is worth about $5- it's probably not worth watching in my opinion. Please also welcome my other writers Dave and Sean - Salty Popcorn's other talented writers. Cher Catwoman Depp Riddler!!!!

August 26th 2008 06:49

The 62-year-old singer and actress is reported to be in talks to play Catwoman opposite Christian Bale in the third Batman film from British director Christopher Nolan.

The Oscar-winner will join a cast that includes Johnny Depp as The Riddler as she plays the whip-carrying burglar. The character has also been played by Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry.

A studio executive said: "Cher is Nolan's first choice to play Catwoman. He wants to her to portray her like a vamp in her twilight years.

"The new Catwoman will be the absolute opposite of Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry's purring creations."

Filming of the new Batman instalment, provisionally entitled The Caped Crusader, is due to begin in Vancouver early next year.

The Dark Knight, this summer's blockbuster, has become the most successful of the Batman movies. Warner Bros expects the film to make about $530m.

It stars the late Heath Ledger, who was found dead in his Manhattan apartment after taking an accidental drugs overdose. His performance as The Joker is widely expected to garner an Oscar nomination.

Cher's recent acting performances have included Tea with Mussolini in 1999 and Stuck on You, in 2003 in which she played herself.

I'm not sure how I feel about that one. Very strange but it could work.

Jason,

now I am excited! What an excellent choice and the subtlety of making Cat woman an aging vamp... par excellence hey wot? (Cher is purrfect)... and she can act too.

Depp as the Riddler?

Magic... don't you just know he'll be as menacing as they can come... master stroke of genius this fellow Nolan... in my opion he has bought something terribly real to the entire Batman Franchise and doing it great justice.

Thanks for the Heads Up ... hardly can wait!

Crazy as it sounds, I'm warming to the idea.
Cher was excellent in Silkwood and Moonstruck.
The idea of Catwoman being a vamp in her twilight years has a nice ring to it.
So what about The Penguin? Is Philip Seymour Hoffman still rumoured?
I do like the idea of Depp as The Riddler, however I hope he doesn't play him like Willy Wonka. He needs to be played more psychotic like Ledger's Joker. Perhaps a raving homicidal homosexual even? Now there's a twist!

I'm not familiar with Cher acting in anything... can this be any good?

Interesting twist. she can definietly act and it might get the horrible taste of Halle Berry as Catwoman out of my mouth. Awful!

Really i do like the idea of a past her prime Catwoman, but Cher...there are so many better mature actresses that STILL hold sex appeal in there 50's and 60's to choose from (Without really thinking about it names like Charlotte Rampling and Isabella Rossellini that pop into my mind.)

Why go for someone as manufactured and uninteresting as Cher? Sure she had a few OK moments back in the day as an actress but nothing truly notable IMO.

I'm just thankful all this is still at the rumours only stage, afterall Nolan hasn't even signed onto Batman 3 yet.

Hi John Doe, I agree that there are many incredibly sexy older women who could play the aging vamp but I'm warming to the idea of someone like Cher who with MUCH plastic surgery has tried to retain her youth. I think that could play into the character very well. Hmm, it's an interesting idea.

JD, but Cher has that deline look to her, which I don't think either Charlotte or Isabella possess nearly as much.

Hi All,
Sorry for not being on for a while - am on annual leave - but am half way writing a review of a repulsive film I saw yesterday.

Morgan: Totally - I love Cher, except I always try and forget her wearing gaffer tape and straddling a canon on a navy boat. Ewwwwwwwwww

Katyzzzzzzzzzz - thanks - I hope it comes true and goes beyond a solid rumor

Cheryl - after The Dark Knight I have complete faith in Nolan to use his best judgment on the casting and know he will make it work

Lilla - I am all for Cher but think Depp a bit too commercial (at the moment) and would not be my choice. It had also been rumored for Casey Affleck to play Riddler and I think that would be a better choice

Brynn - this would be the only way I would like to see Depp as the Riddler - a raving homicidal homosexual - perfect. I had heard yes to Hoffman but I hope they don't do more than two bad guys

Cib??????????????????????????? - You have to do some IMDB'ing and suss out some Cher movies - I heaps prefer her as an actress than a singer. She even has a little gold statue for acting named Oscar. Try "Mermaids", "Silkwood", "Mask" and "Tea with Mussolini".

Johnny - totally - that Catwoman makes me shiver. I did like Michelle Pfeiffer thogh. Some of my friends want Nolan to cast Berry as a laugh. Hehe

Dianna - yay that - thanks for thinking it so!!

JD - for the first time I think I disagree - I thought she was great when she acted and if Nolan a) signs on (how could he not!!) and b) casts her I think this will be G O L D

Sammy - no confirmation yet but hey, it's a start

Thanks for commenting guys and lovely ladies!!

I loved Michelle as Catwoman. I know she wouldn't do it again, but it has been 15 years (!), she could very well still play an ageing Catwoman (with a touch of make-up), and with a purr more cynicism she could be divine.

I totally and utterly cannot see this happening - placing Cher as catwoman is the same thing to me as casting woopi goldberg - I'm just.....no......I'm speechless, I have no speech.....

I think it's absolutely brilliant - it is only rumors but Cher is fantastic at acting and it shits on her singing - picture that costume she wore in that song while mounted on a battleship cannon and then think meow! LOL
Now Woopi as CatWoman is GOLD - I am writing to Nolan NOW. Thanks Shaun lol

AAAAARRRRHHHHHH!!! No, dont tell him - I could see it if she was younger perhaps - but that horrible song of hers that I hear everywhere I go has permanently skewed any kind of objective opinion of her - especially if you've seen the video for it - yikes - I'm letting some bad skeletons out of this closet - I'm just gonna be quiet now
