Welcome to Salty Popcorn - my site dedicated to expressing my opinion on films. Most of the reviews I read in the paper make me angry that they are either all so negative or I completely disagree with them. So now it's my turn. I hope you enjoy it and if you do sign up for updates on the left hand side. Thanks for stopping in!! Also, be sure to check out my other blogs www.sydneytable.com and http://www.orble.com/total-randomness/ PLEASE NOTE: My scoring of films is now based on an "Out of 10" score. Warren Miller's - Children of Winter ($14-)

"When it's cold and snowing, others run inside. But skiers and snowboarders do the opposite, no matter how old we are," said Max Bervy, director and producer. "We are all the Children of Winter, and if you ski or ride, this movie reaffirms what we all know, that we're lucky to know the shortest, coldest days of the year."

Deep powder. Huge airs. World-class cinematography. It's all part of Warren Miller's Children of Winter which is set to music by Radiohead, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Beck, and others. Shown in crystal-clear high definition. This is a film for the skiing enthusiast and high energy sporting action lover. I have seen most of Warren Miller's films over the years as am a massive skiing enthusiast. Miller was actually one of my life inspirations growing up. One of his biographies explains how the skiing enthusiast will do anything to get to the snow and ski. Me and some school friends used his advice and lived in my Ford Laser for a week at minus temperatures - the car was parked in a Jindabyne car park and we slept, ate and enjoyed ourselves for a week of budget adventure thrills.

Warren Miller's 2008/9 Film Tour showcases spectacular footage shot in Japan, Austria, British Columbia, Alaska, and Iceland with jaw-dropping performances by an impressive assembly of world-class athletes, including Jonny Moseley, Daron Rahlves, Marco Sullivan, Seth Wescott, Gerry Lopez, and Wendy Fisher.

Timeless Warren Miller athlete Chris Anthony takes on Leadville, Colorado's legendary skijoring competition. Pep Fujas explores Silverton Mountain, the only backcountry ski resort in the United States. Teenage snowboard pro Ben Watts chases surf legend Gerry Lopez on Mount Bachelor's frozen waves. Skiing's top female athletes meet up in Crested Butte for the deepest powder in decades. And Jeff Annetts, Drew Stoecklein, and Derek Foose sail Iceland, skiing mountains that end in the ocean. Stefan Lessard of The Dave Matthews Band, Eric Fawcett of N.E.R.D, Adam Gardner of Guster, and Ed Robertson of The Barenaked Ladies unite to form Yukon Kornelius, a supergroup who perform on and off the snow in Vermont and Colorado.

This is a niche film and if you don't like skiing or seeing people do some amazing feats in the face of nature then you could get bored. Out of all the Warren Miller films I have seen this is by far my favourite. Screening right before the ski season starts this has amped me and the entire cinema up last night and I am now ready to go and punish my knees and extremities. Skiing is a culture, it's not just a sport. Skiers and snowboarders have a silent understanding and combined love for this pristine white canvased playground. If you ever get to go skiing and don't break a bone in the car park, and make it to the slopes, you may find an addiction flitter into your bones that you will spend a lifelong passion to "get your annual hit". If you get to watch this subculture film you will love it. Unfortunately the film is only on a limited realease national tour and today is the last day in Sydney. You can suss out warrenmiller.com.au for other Australian dates but one thing to look forward to is the DVD release that will come out eventually, it is a keeper.

The film is worth it alone for the sailing and ice skiing in Iceland or even for Jason Biggs playing the cowbell. Worth $14-

LOL - thanks. There was so many things we used to do to save money at the snow.

1) In the past they used to write a different code on the tickets each day. They wrote it on with permanent marker. This was solved by cotton buds, nail polish remover and patience - you had to dab the code off. Then you could find out the new day's code and rewrite it with your trusty own permanent marker. At now a costly $105- a day to ski - what do they expect!!

2) If you want a half day ski you wait in the car park around 11am and people might have had enough and be heading home even though they bought a full day ticket. Offer them $10- - it is more than they would have had. This one is also solved with pliers to cut the wire off. Re attach to self and twist the wire. Cheap skiing solved.

Hahahaha - I miss being younger!
