This year is slowly becoming the year of the Alien Invasion film. First we have had the slightly Alien Invasion film, which was more Alien Abduction Predators, then we have more recently had the film SKYLINE (my review is going up today) then coming up early next year is BATTLE: LA and now this brilliant concept Cowboys and Aliens.
What I love about this concept is that most Alien Invasion films are set in modern time or have since been modified. This film takes the concept of an Alien Invasion into the days of Cowboys. I am so excited about this concept and the cast and crew that I may let out a little squeal of delight
.
Cowboys & Aliens is a 100-page 2006 graphic novel created by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg and written by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley, with penciler Luciano Lima. The comic is being adapted into a film of the same name. The title matches that of a 1995 16-page ashcan, published by Tom Arvis and Sureshot Comics. In 1998 Platinum Studios trademarked the name, and in 2004, through a separate agreement, negotiated all rights to the title from Arvis, who changed the name of his book to Wayout West.
Jon Favreau (Iron Man) is directing the screen adaptation from Universal and DreamWorks of the comic, starring Daniel Craig (007), Harrison Ford (like derrr), Olivia Wilde (god she is getting around, mostly famous for House and pretty soon she will be mega huge after TRON: Legacy), Sam Rockwell (Moon), Noah Ringer (The Last Airbender but don't hold it against him - he was great), Paul Dano (L.I.E. and Little Miss Sunshine), Ana de la Reguera (Cop Out and Nacho Libre), and Clancy Brown (Shawshank Redemption and Highlander). The film is being produced by Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek), and Platinum Studios's CEO and creator of the graphic novel, Scott Mitchell Rosenberg.
Blockbuster filmmaker Jon Favreau directs Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford in an event film for summer 2011 that crosses the classic Western with the alien-invasion movie in a blazingly original way: Cowboys & Aliens. Joined by an arsenal of top moviemakers - Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci - he brings an all-new action thriller that will take audiences into the Old West, where a lone cowboy leads an uprising against a terror from beyond our world.
1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger (Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don't welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford). It's a town that lives in fear.
But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.
Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he's been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveler Ella (Olivia Wilde), he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents - townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors - all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.
The film is scheduled for a July 29, 2011 release.
