Welcome to Salty Popcorn - my site dedicated to expressing my opinion on films. Most of the reviews I read in the paper make me angry that they are either all so negative or I completely disagree with them. So now it's my turn. I hope you enjoy it and if you do sign up for updates on the left hand side. Thanks for stopping in!! Also, be sure to check out my other blogs www.sydneytable.com and http://www.orble.com/total-randomness/ PLEASE NOTE: My scoring of films is now based on an "Out of 10" score. JACK AND JILL: A Review

December 8th 2011 03:41
: Big Thanks to Guest Reviewer Ben McHolme
Category: Reviews
I would rather have acid dripped into my eyes slowly than sit through another Adam Sandler film and I thought it more appropriate to send someone closer to the target audience to view this one. So HUGE thanks to Ben McHolme for attending this screening and for wasting the 90mins of his life it stole from him .

Jack Jill, Adam Sandler, Katie Holmes, Al Pacino

The last Adam Sandler movie I positively recommended was CLICK (2006). Since then I would only recommend his films to true Adam Sandler fans. To people that likedWATERBOY and BILLY MADISON I would say wait for the DVD release of JACK AND JILL. However, to those that liked YOU DON'T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN then JACK AND JILL is worth the $18 ticket; but as is the case with the majority of Happy Madison's latest ventures- DON'T GET YOUR HOPES UP! For those of you who don't like Adam Sandler films then why are you even watching this movie?

There is not much to say about the plot of this film. I could have explained it in one sentence, "Adam Sandler is Adam Sandler". You know what to expect with a Happy Madison production. This movie is no different except you get to see sandler twice as much JACK AND JILL centres around Jack (Adam Sandler) and his frustratingly annoying twin sister Jill (Adam Sandler dressed in drag). Jill is over for thanksgiving with her family, but Jack hates her and cannot wait for her to leave, doing everything he can to get rid of her. Frustratingly for Jack, every time they have an argument, Jill feels the need to extend her holiday so they can leave on a high note. Things change when the same celebrity whom Jack is trying to recruit for an ad campaign develops a crush on Jill. Cue Al Pacino who has a crush on Jill.

As with the majority of Happy Madison films, it relies on toilet and slapstick humour, which at times is actually quite funny, even if you just want to see Sandler get hurt. The movies saviour, if any, is also its curse. The amount of cameos is impressive: Al Pacino, John McEnroe, Shaquille O'Neal - to name a few. One thing that becomes certain from this is that Adam Sandler must still have a lot of pull in Hollywood. I say this is a curse because each and every cameo appearance makes you question the actor's decision to star in such a film-how could they have been so desperate and what the hell did Adam Sandler offer them to take part? Case in point, Al Pacino he has gone from great movies such as DONNIE BRASCO, GODFATHER and SCARFACE, to JACK AND JILL. He does very well in this movie but what is he doing here? Did he need some fast money for renovations to his mansion? Has he sold out? That being said, perhaps no matter your wealth status, the offer of a ludicrous amount of money for only a few weeks work is too tempting to resist. Regardless, Al Pacino fans would be better off giving this film a miss.

However, there are a few positives in this movie, that is, if you don't have high expectations. Indeed there are a few funny scenes, mainly those featured in the JACK AND JILL trailers. A particularly noteworthy aspect of the film was the scenes in which real twins discussed their views of living life as a twin and their interactions with one another; a surprisingly heart-felt aspect of an otherwise ordinary film. Nick Swardson (JUST GO WITH IT) is one real comedian in this movie, and is hilarious without relying on cliche slapstick. As with his amusing performance in JUST GO WITH IT, he plays the same awkward, foot-in-mouth character. It seems that he has replaced Rob Schneider as Adam Sandler's sidekick.

With all this being said there are quite a few scenes which make you laugh out loud, however I am quite easily amused. I am like a child who gets a new toy and spends all my time playing with the cardboard box. But as I was not the only person laughing in the audience it appeared to be warmly received by others too. For those of you who don't take things too seriously like me I give this movie a 4/10. Thanks for reading my review, I'm off now to play with my cardboard box.
