Welcome to Salty Popcorn - my site dedicated to expressing my opinion on films. Most of the reviews I read in the paper make me angry that they are either all so negative or I completely disagree with them. So now it's my turn. I hope you enjoy it and if you do sign up for updates on the left hand side. Thanks for stopping in!! Also, be sure to check out my other blogs www.sydneytable.com and http://www.orble.com/total-randomness/ PLEASE NOTE: My scoring of films is now based on an "Out of 10" score. Drag Me To Hell ($12-)

Drag Me To Hell ($12-)

Director Sam Raimi (Spider-Man trilogy, Evil Dead series) returns to the horror genre with Drag Me To Hell, an original tale of a young woman's desperate quest to break an evil curse.

Drag Me to Hell

Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) is an ambitious L.A. loan officer with a charming boyfriend, professor Clay Dalton (Justin Long). Life is good until the mysterious Mrs. Ganush (Lorna Raver) arrives at the bank to beg for an extension on her home loan. Should Christine follow her instincts and give the old woman a break? Or should she deny the extension to impress her boss, Mr. Jacks (David Paymer), and get a leg-up on a promotion? Christine fatefully chooses the latter, shaming Mrs. Ganush and dispossessing her of her home.

In retaliation, the old woman places the powerful curse of the Lamia on Christine, transforming her life into a living hell. Haunted by an evil spirit and misunderstood by a skeptical boyfriend, she seeks the aid of seer Rham Jas (Dileep Rao) to save her soul from eternal damnation. To help the shattered Christine return her life to normal, the psychic sets her on a frantic course to reverse the spell. As evil forces close in, Christine must face the unthinkable: how far will she go to break free of the curse? - Thanks to Universal Pictures

Drag Me to Hell Lorna Raver

This is by far the best US horror movie to be released in years and thankgod for Sam Raimi who has finally redeemed himself after the horrible Spiderman 3. This to me took the angle of a Hitchcock film with a building suspense to the showdown with the Lamia and pending hell. It has shocks, scares, jumps and amazing effects throughout but never too much. Some of the splatters of blood are laugh worthy but oh so gory and the use of false teeth made my skin crawl.

The acting is great, Lohman, really suits the part and she cops a hiding getting thrown around and across rooms - cool . I have a huge crush on Justin Long and wish he had more of a part - it was weird seeing him as the supporting partner - unusual in films to have the male as the support but Lohman was great. And I do like female leads. But the scene stealer is easily Lorna Raver - she is superb and bloody frightening. Her make up and comfort in character will make your night's sleep very uneasy after viewing this. She is the grandma you NEVER want.

Drag Me to Hell

This script was originally written after the Army of Darkness in 1992 but Raimi went onto other projects before coming back to this. Another cool piece of trivia is Mrs Ganush's licence plate on her car - it is 99951 and when turned upside down reads as IS666. And finally Justin Long only uses Mac products in the film - he is the Mac spokesperson we always see in the Mac ads

Drag Me to Hell

The mythology is a bit scattered and the sceance scene is tad laughable but hey - it has a talking goat and that's just awesome - haha. If you have a cat you may get a bit disappointed with the film but it adds to the shock value. I would recommend not watching this on a full stomach as some of the things that enter mouths in this film is just vomit worthy.

Definately not a film to take your parents or granny too (the first film I paid for and took my mum too was Hellraiser and I will never live it down) but it should do good with the end of the school holidays and it will definately get some screams - all you teenage guys out there - this is one to take your partner to - you will get lots of hugs and a permanent attachment from your partner to keep them from freaking out. Worth $12-

Ooh this looks good! I have to ask though because I've just been reading a series of books which feature Lamia. Is it a serpent demon in the movie?

I've seen a few different interpretations of the Lamia recently.

So is this Sam Raimi at his Evil Dead best? Thankfully I never went to see Spiderman 3, something about the trailer put me off.

PS: Hey don't bag the old lady out, I resemble that some mornings when I have a bad hangover

Def not a serpent Demon CJ - you never get a full on look at it as it possesses. You see some cool sillhouettes of it - it has horns.

I don't know if he is at his Evil Dead best but this film sure beats the crap out of most of the recent horror schlock to come out of the US. And I am sure you don't wake up with staples in your head. And I hope you aren't like the old lady - she is scary

And your poor mum - hope she likes it.

Just watched this movie today! I loved the characters especially since everyone except Justin Long had conflicting characteristics. I just did a review too...although my experience wasn't very pleasant as I had rowdy teenagers beside me screaming and laughing the whole way through.

Hmm..., strange, very strange, Jason. Most of the time, when my girlfriend watching the horror films, she's mostly screen like psycho. However, for this film, she didn't scream, but laugh from the beginning to the end. She said it's very hilarious... (Am I missing so part here, or it's just my delusion?)

It can be looked at funny I suppose - it is kind over the top. Maybe your girlfriend has a twisted mind and saw the humor in it

Jason, you seemed to like it more than a $12 (although at the bottom of your review you only gave it $11) ...

For me this is the best movie he's made since his debut, The Evil Dead. I'm not very excited that he's decided to remake his own movie though.

Alison Lohman rocks. And I love that fly scene.

Flem of Ganish Sammy - I like it Thanks for personal message re typo of pricing

Bryn, no I liked it at $12- that's why I rated it as such. It is pretty good and a great US horror film but it won't get a purchase in my DVD collection - it's no Titanic or Star Trek . $12 out of $17 = a score of 71%. More than fair for this film. Thanks for also pointing out my typo. All fixed now.
I totally agree re Lohman and ewwwww flies and things pouring into mouths.

Hi Wynona - I suppose if he made it in 1992 when he wrote the script it would be being remade about now - it's worth the watch. Thanks for your thoughts - enjoy
