Twilight Eclipse (6/10)

It breaks my heart to say it, being the Twihard I am, but for me this one did not cut it as a whole. Ouch - a little bit of my stone cold heart just chipped off.
The third book in the series, Eclipse, was always my least favourite book in the series. It constantly continues the love triangle and no-one can make up their bloody minds. Jacob comes across as a love sick puppy (pun intended
) and kind of gets annoying. Bella is fast becoming a bitch in my books as she wants the best of both worlds, eternal love with pasty Edward and the body of Jacob. And OMG - I just can't get over how good Taylor Lautner looks in this film. He has grown up a bit and matured and his workouts have created the ultimate body, seriously those other wolves need to keep their shirts on as they look stupid next to him.
Bella and Edward are back together, but Jacob wants to win Bella over for himself. Of course, she wants to become a vampire right after high school graduation (kids these days!), much to Jacob's horror -- but Edward refuses unless she marries him first (much to Jacob's even greater horror). Meanwhile Victoria, the vengeful vampire, is still out to get Bella, and Seattle seems to be infested with new, young vampires on a killing spree. And the two problems may be related. So ancient enemies, vampires and werewolves, join forces to protect Bella and solve both problems -- before the Volturi intervene.
The film starts out really good and the excitement builded as I knew I was re-entering the Twilight universe but very quickly slows to a numbing pace of more of the same love triangle. This film would have been much better if they shaved 15-30min from the final cut. Pretty much the entire crew is back but they tried covering bits of everything and lost a lot of the rest, if this makes sense. For some reason I am pretty sure they shot the opening and closing Edward and Bella scenes at the same time and these were the first shots filmed. Not long after this I think RPatz and Kristen Stewart actually split up. Their onscreen chemistry is dead. For some part of the film I actually wanted Bella and Jacob to hook up.
After watching Kristen Stewart recently in Australia (with that damn sexy wolf boy) I noticed how she is such a downer of a person and it was hard for her to smile at all, this may be due to a fear of media and the public but it comes across in her acting, or I can now notice it more. I had the thoughts going through my head that she is over the franchise and wants to move on. But for once I heaps preferred her to RPatz who was just boring. Even teenage girls in the cinema started getting fidgety and talking incessantly, and these guys are the target audience.
Uber hottie, Lautner (Jacob), for once actually looks like he can act, his maturity is coming across more and more and like the Potter kids, experienced gain from each film has improved his skills, by Breaking Dawn he may actually be worthy of his pay cheques. The film makers are milking his body though a bit too much, but for once they are actually making jokes of it. In his first scene in the film, while actually wearing a TShirt they play "cool guy" music and I actually burst out laughing, it is a pop magazine milking for the tweenagers. Later on he turns up without a TShirt on (no complaining) but even Edward asks "does he not have a shirt" - it was gold
. Then every time you see him for the rest of the film he is pretty much only wearing shorts. One of my friends, Roslyn, recently said to me that Summit is bloody lucky that Taylor is so f**king hot. And I have to agree, without his body and looks these films would be absolute fodder. I do feel for the guy, how on earth he filmed all those outdoor scenes in such a cold environment with no shirt is worthy of a decent pay cheque in itself. Myself, gay men everywhere and the world of teenage girls all thank him for his sacrifice hahahahaha.
I have been reading a lot that David Slade would make this a much darker film, I assumed they meant darker as in storyline and plot delivery but by no way did it come across as more dark and I actually felt this film looked the most tacky out of the lot. The occasional blue-screen scenes are woeful, and some of the camera filters were appalling, the scenes with Bella and Jacob on top of the snow capped mountain were so grainy and out of place it could have been filmed on a mobile phone and you could tell a lot of the outdoor scenes were mainly filmed in a studio. With technology today this could have been filmed so much better. But, the fighting scenes were shot really well and I wish the battle scene came sooner, it was the first exciting thing in a long long film. It is so cool how vampires shatter when their neck is broken (oops spoiler hahaha).
It was great seeing Xavier Samuels in his first big US film. He is one of my favourite Australian actors after seeing him in September and Newcastle. Just love his work. In this he was pretty damn good and has better looks and acting ability than RPatz, my only letdown for this was he was so under utilised. He is the leader of the newborn vampires, under the instruction of Victoria and his scenes are good, I wanted more. My fave in the films (besides Jacob) is definitely Alice (Ashley Greene) and she has such an onscreen presence that she makes every scene lighter and more enjoyable. I just want to hug her
And her life partner in the film, Jasper (Jackson Rothbone) looks much better in this one and has also improved on the acting and presence front. They are such a cute couple and would have made a much better Edward and Bella.
The others are all forgettable, including the third person to play Victoria, Bryce Dallas Howard (Ronnie's daughter). She is my least favourite Victoria and I found nothing enjoyable about her, except that leap across the river. Even Dakota Fanning was underwhelming.
I actually enjoyed this film, but not as much as I did New Moon and the negatives in this one far outweigh the positives. Like the books this is the bridging film that Meyer made way too long when she wrote it. I think they improved on the delivery and did a good job making this book more exciting on film, they just rushed it and didn't do a good job about its delivery. My favourite books were an equal tie between the first and the last, Breaking Dawn, which I am very excited to see on film, as a two parter, just like Harry Potter they are a) milking and stretching it out to make more money and b) attempting to do the story justice by fitting as much of it onscreen as they can. OMG - the TV just showed an ad for the new season of Bondi vet and a dog named Bella giving pups - how appropriate
LOL. Twilight Eclipse is out now and worth 6/10 - sadly it was not as good as I hoped.

I'm using your review to determine whether to watch this or not.
So, is it a drag? or is it enjoyable?

Glad you did not agree with everything or we would all be robots but glad you got my point - worst of the lot. I really had high hopes for this one.
Bill Condon is directing both the last two and his most memorable film for me was Dreamgirls - a very odd choice to direct a Twilight film or two but he is good with visuals. Fingers crossed.

I agree with you on most points. I think keeping the same director for the last two films is the correct thing to do. While it has been a director per film it is also a director per book onto film and this would definitely stick with the one person filming the last film.
I really enjoyed the beginning of Eclipse - did not miss the voice over - but this could be because I just love Xavier Samuels
The eyes are creepy and scary but in a small town they would be mysterious and no one is going missing from their immediate group and they have always been known as just weird
As for the shattering like glass - while not in the books, I did like it. they don't have blood so how could you show a serious or fatal injury on them - this was just a way to visualise a vampire being ripped to pieces.
Thanks for your comments and compliments - I like how you share all your thoughts
