Welcome to Salty Popcorn - my site dedicated to expressing my opinion on films. Most of the reviews I read in the paper make me angry that they are either all so negative or I completely disagree with them. So now it's my turn. I may also throw in the odd post of whatever the hell I like. I hope you enjoy it and if you do sign up for updates on the left hand side. Thanks for stopping in!! PLEASE NOTE: I rate my films different from the standard 5 star approach. As I work in the cinema industry I am aware that the most expensive general admission ticket is $16.50. My rating of a film is based on what I think the ticket is worth in a dollar amount up to $16.50 (a perfect film). If I think a film is worth about $5- it's probably not worth watching in my opinion. Edge of Love ($9-)

Edge of Love ($9-)

A sequel to Pearl Harbour anyone? I HATE love triangle films - make your mind up people!!!!

A beautifully drawn love story, the film revolves around two feisty, free-spirited women, Caitlin Thomas and Vera Killick, Vera's husband William Killick, and the brilliant, charismatic poet Dylan Thomas who loves both women. Broken promises, passion, betrayal, the shadow of war and the constant threat of imminent death push the protagonists to THE EDGE OF LOVE. By no means a biopic in the traditional vein, the story explores the bohemian underworld of war-torn London, and the intimate complexities of two young couples whose lives and loves become dangerously intertwined.

THE EDGE OF LOVE is directed by the award-winning John Maybury (Love is the Devil, The Jacket) and produced by Rebekah Gilbertson and Sarah Radclyffe. The screenplay is by Sharman MacDonald. The impressive production team includes Director of Photography Jonathan Freeman (Hollywoodland, Rome), Academy Award nominated Costume Designer April Ferry (Southland Tales, Donnie Darko), Production Designer Alan MacDonald (The Queen, Love is the Devil) and editor Emma Hickox (Becoming Jane, Kinky Boots), with music by Angelo Badalamenti (Twin Peaks, Wild at Heart, Mulholland Drive, A Very Long Engagement).

OK - there are many positives to this film. The locations are beautiful and the cinematography is award deserving - considering the cinematographer (Jonathan Freeman) has come from TV this is amazing stuff. The music is subtle, understated and sensational. Kiera Knightly is just BRILLIIANT in this, her singing is soothing and she should have been from the 40's, she would have been the most beautiful celebrity of the time. The costumes are great, the use of wool on Sienna and Keira is comforting and I wanted to hug up with them to get warm - you can really feel the Welsh weather. Cillian Murphy is beautiful - he has THE MOST astounding eyes in film land. I just want to dive into them. I thoroughly enjoyed Matthew Rhys as Dylan Thomas and he needs to do more film and break away from Brothers and Sisters - this guy is massively talented.

And now unfortunately the negatives.
While Keira Knightley is divine, she is much better not smiling, seduction works best - when she smiles in this film her nose and lips screw up and her lips go from being full to thin non existent lines that could have been drawn on, this is only an observation - I think she is stunning but this annoyed me whenever she smiled. I think Cillian and Matthew Rhys played the wrong parts - the Cillian character spends most of the movie at war and comes back towards the end - he should have been the one who stayed and was the desired person by both women - I CAN see women not caring and ruining friendships to bed this man - with Matthew Rhys I kept thinking about his character in Bros and Sis' and could not believe that I would choose him over Cillian.

I found Keira's attempt at Welsh all over the place - at one stage I thought she was trying out Irish, followed by English and then touching on Welsh - maybe it was spending time with Cillian - he could turn me Irish! Hehe

And considering Sienna Miller's recent antics with trying to homewreck half of Hollywood she could have calmed the skankness of her character. While beautiful she comes across as a slut in the real world and the film and I am pretty sure she may get some audience members laughing at her character - not a long shot to perfect the role. There were a few lines she said where I laughed at the screen. And her as a mother in this film is appalling - in the end I was thinking you are getting what you deserve and I apologise if this is harsh - it's just what I felt.

AND - I had no idea this was also about the famous poet Dylan Thomas - yes he does speak a bit of poetry but the film is all for Keira. What would have been a better film would have been a tale of Thomas' life and the women he ruined set against the same backdrop with the same people but I guess this is what happens when the screenwriter is the leading lady's mum.

I also found too many plot points going on, is it a story about the husband going to the war and coming back shell shocked, is it about Dylan Thomas, the love triangle or I should say quadrangle, just too much, slow it down and do more quality as opposed to quantity.

Trivia:
1) The screenwriter is Keira Knightley's mother.
2)Lindsay Lohan was originally attached to play the role of Caitlin, but dropped out shortly before filming began.
3) Sharman Macdonald wrote the role of Caitlin with Keira Knightley in mind, but Keira chose to play Vera instead.
4) Keira Knightley does all of her own singing in the film. She worked with vocal coach Claire Underwood to prepare for the film.
5) Producer Rebekah Gilbertson is the granddaughter of the real people played by Keira Knightley and Cillian Murphy in the film.
6) The film's title is subtly shown, in part, throughout the film in various places. Most noticeably after we see Caitlin's affair it appears as a silhouette on the curtain.

I do think this film has an audience and if you want to take your gran or mum out this weekend then take her to this one. I can't see it pulling in patrons by the numbers so it won't be in cinemas for very long. If you liked the Merchant Ivory films this maybe for you but it's not my cup of tea. Mainly for the cinematography and Cillian's eyes this film is worth $9-. Starts tomorrow August 21st.

GIVEAWAY: I have a double pass to watch Tropic Thunder to giveaway to the FIRST person to private message me the answer to this: Which Hollywood celebrity has the skank Sienna Miller most recently home wrecked? Include your postal address and it's in the mail!! The pass is valid for 2 at mostly every cinema screening it but it is not valid on Tuesdays or Saturdays after 5pm.

And to end - with thanks to Dylan Thomas - one of his poems mentioned in the film.

Among Those Killed In The Dawn Raid Was A Man Aged A Hundred by Dylan Thomas

When the morning was waking over the war
He put on his clothes and stepped out and he died,
The locks yawned loose and a blast blew them wide,
He dropped where he loved on the burst pavement stone
And the funeral grains of the slaughtered floor.
Tell his street on its back he stopped a sun
And the craters of his eyes grew springshots and fire
When all the keys shot from the locks, and rang.
Dig no more for the chains of his grey-haired heart.
The heavenly ambulance drawn by a wound
Assembling waits for the spade's ring on the cage.
O keep his bones away from the common cart,
The morning is flying on the wings of his age
And a hundred storks perch on the sun's right hand.
