From Home and Away to Thor with a Stint Captaining a Starcruiser
For those of you who haven’t heard the news yet, yesterday it broke that actor Chris Hemsworth (who can be seen in theaters right now in “Star Trek” playing James T. Kirk’s dad, George Kirk) has been chosen to play the Marvel Super Hero “Thor” ending literally years of speculation.
Apparently James Bond actor Daniel Craig was offered the role first by Marvel, but he decided to turn it down. The other finalists for the role were reportedly Triple H (WWE Wrestler, who will probably end up being Conan) and Rome’s Kevin McKidd.
I haven’t seen enough of Hemsworth to really have an opinion on him as an actor (although he did a pretty good job in Star Trek for the short amount of time he was on screen).
In Star Trek Hemsworth originally went for the role of James Tiberiius Kirk but was beaten by cheeky superspunk Chris Pine. JJ Abrams then offered Hemsworth the role of Kirk's dad which he did incredibly well. It was such a shame he only had such a small part. But it was the memorable first scene of the film that set up the entire new Trek universe. I found him a strong performer with an amazing bod
and he looked way better in the uniform than Pine and had the perfect look to actually believably be Kirk's father.
Chris who? Yep, that appears to be the first reaction online by bloggers the world over - but - it’s hardly surprising that Marvel Studios have decided to go with a relatively unknown actor for a character like ‘Thor’, who is hardly what you would consider a decorated wordsmith. Why sign a big name to a big deal for a character that will look hardly anything like the actor in the finished product? I would also imagine that money would be the only motivation for any notable actor anyway in this case. A lot of people are bitching that how can a 25yr old that is 5'11" actually play a Norse God - well my suggestion to you all is to shut your traps until you get to see him in action. He was great in Trek, and if he wants it bad enough and has the talent he could be the next big export from Oz. He definately has the looks so give him a shot.
DeadlineHollywoodDaily originally broke the news, announcing that Marvel Studio’s Kevin Feige and director Kenneth Branagh had decided to go with Hemsworth after they initially passed on him, then after persistent badgering from his agent, let him read again and were highly impressed.
The only synopsis I can find for Thor is;
Partially disabled medical student Dr. Donald Blake discovers his heretofore unknown alter ego, the Norse warrior, Thor. But this film is being written by Stan Lee and directed by Kenneth Brannagh so I have high hopes - Brannagh has talent and attention to detail and I would not think he would take on a superhero movie unless it was going to be great. You can also expect quite a few cameos from other Marvel characters with a definate Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) appearance being on the cards.
After searching Thor online this morning it still lists 3 people as being rumored for the role of Thor so Hemsworth's success in gaining the role could possibly be a rumor also but it's the news of the moment on most of the Hollywood film websites and blogs this morning so something must have come from it. Fingers crossed - I wish him all the best.
Below is his appearance interview on The Morning Show plus some of his footage from Star Trek. Another little known piece of info - Hemsworth's wife in Star Trek and James T Kirk's mum is Jennifer Morrison - Dr. Allison Cameron - one of the stars of House and married in real life to old Neighbors star Jesse Spencer. She gets around with our Ozzie soap stars -

I think Brannagh will do this some heart and meaningfullness in a Shakespearean way.
