Welcome to Salty Popcorn - my site dedicated to expressing my opinion on films. Most of the reviews I read in the paper make me angry that they are either all so negative or I completely disagree with them. So now it's my turn. I may also throw in the odd post of whatever the hell I like. I hope you enjoy it and if you do sign up for updates on the left hand side. Thanks for stopping in!! PLEASE NOTE: I rate my films different from the standard 5 star approach. As I work in the cinema industry I am aware that the most expensive general admission ticket is $16.50. My rating of a film is based on what I think the ticket is worth in a dollar amount up to $16.50 (a perfect film). If I think a film is worth about $5- it's probably not worth watching in my opinion. Gus Does it again with Paranoid Park

March 18th 2008 07:24
I am finally posting my first review/ comments on a peculiar yet fantastic film presented to us by one of the masters of artistic celluloid.
Gus Van Sant - known for such wonders as Good Will Hunting, My Own Private Idaho and Elephant.
His new film Paranoid Park is on limited release and probably for due reason that it won't appeal to the mainstream hordes.
The film is a confession by the main character, played by the successful film debutant Gabe Nevins.
Gabe plays a young skateboarder living the isolated youth who through events accidentally kills a security guard. Not knowing what to do he decides against doing anything until a policeman starts questioning skateboarders from his school. His solution is to write a confession that the film literally is.

Gus Van Sant wrote the screenplay, directed the film and added his unique flavor to things by editing the film himself.
I found the unusual filming and the downplaying of the acting bordering on real life and something I thoroughly enjoyed. Add to this some sensational sound effects and music including Elliot Smith and the film rocked my world for just under 2hrs.
I believe Gabe can go far following on the heels of this film and something that has happened to a few of the discovered leads in Van Sant's films, Keanu Reeves, John Robinson, Ben Afeck (shhhh - it's not his fault) and Matt Damon to name a few.
My warning though - if you don't like arty films and prefer things blowing up with a limited plot then this is NOT FOR YOU. This will appeal to the discerning film lover.
The most expensive ticket in Australia at the general cinemas is $16-, for this film I would pay $11-
