My Heathers obsessed friend Paul went totally apeshit when I mentioned I had never seen Heathers. He pretty much jumped in his car and broke every traffic light, killed a granny and sideswiped a few skateboarders to get home, return and get a copy in my hands. He may have even mentioned the ever so gracious line from the film he calls "One of the best film lines of all time" - "well f**k me gently with a chainsaw".
I thought, 21yr old film, Winona, Christian, m'eh - will give it a watch to shut Paul up so I don't get massacred by a chainsaw so I put it on after a late night return to home after work. What an absolute surprise - the only thing that was dated was half the clothes - but they added to the cmoplete oddness of this film. I was expecting a teenage 80's Mean Girls but got a Tim Burton/ Tarantino styled school flick. LOVED IT!!!
Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder) has sacrificed everything in order to preserve her place in Westerburg High's most impenetrable social clique, the HEATHERS. As the only member of the group not named "Heather", Veronica has to work extra hard just to stay afloat. Going against her own morals and intelligence, Veronica succumbs to peer pressure on a daily basis, faking her delight in the humiliation of the school's less popular students. Bored of the frat parties and cow tipping so popular among her friends, Veronica's curiosity is peaked when a mysterious new guy named JD comes to town. The dark, brooding JD (Christian Slater at his best) observes Veronica among her pack in the lunchroom (where social hierarchy is most clearly displayed), concluding that Veronica is not a Heather at heart. When Veronica confides in JD that she hates her friends and wishes Heather #1 was dead, she never expects her words to have such dire consequences. Before she knows what's happening, JD is dragging Veronica on a killing spree staged as a teen suicide outbreak. But as Veronica soon learns, even death cannot stop the HEATHERS. As one Heather dies, her red scrunchee (the symbol of all power) gets passed on to the next Heather in line, and the clique that was the HEATHERS starts to feel like an inescapable social disease. How far will this war for popularity go?
What I disliked about this movie:
* Just the poster really - it's misleading, it paiints a "Grease 3" feel to the movie - and hence why I probably avoided it. This is what should have been used for the poster art!
What I liked about this movie:
* Winona Ryder - she is just sensational in this film and exactly what I used to love about her. It is one of her best parts and it is like the little Lydia Deetz has all grown up and is just as nuts.
* Christian Slater - easiestly his best role and a reminder of how damn hot he used to be
He is just so laid back and perfect in this part.
* The deep dark constant black satire comedy - it is hysterical and way ahead of its time. If this was released today it would be a smash hit. It's lines and script make up most of the recent teenage slang and the words of this film have evolved into vocabulary. Adding "much" after a comment is now commonplace.
* The take on school life heirarchy and the cleverness in filiming it
It should be noted that this film premiered at Sundance in 1989, along with sex, lies and videotape, thus commencing Gen-X Cinema.
Info on the Musical:
Heathers has been in musical production status for a while, and they've managed to keep it under wraps. They did some readings recently week in Endeavors screening room with Kristen Bell playing the lead. Christian Campbell played J.D., and Jenna Leigh Green, Corri English, and Christine Lakin played the three Heathers. No word on if any of the actors plan on continuing the roles once the play opens.
The musical is being developed by Andy Fickman, director of Race to Witch Mountain. He is working with Kevin Murphy, who will be writing the lyrics and book, and Larry O'keefe will be composing. Heathers is scheduled to open in 2010.
I like it.

Dear Diary, my teen-angst bullshit now has a body count.

Let's pretend I blew up the school... all the schools. Now that you're dead, what are you gonna do with your life?

Kurt's Dad: My son's a homosexual, and I love him. I love my dead gay son.
J.D.: Wonder how he'd react if his son had a limp wrist with a pulse.
