BRING ON THE AMERICAN VERSION
Firstly I will do the giveaway and then the review of the film. The film is releasing this coming Thursday 3rd March I am pretty sure but it is on previews this weekend. With special thanks to the distributors I have 10X double passes to the film and if you would like them you can email me at jkdigitaldesigns@gmail.com or Personal Message me on Orble the answer to this question: Who will be directing the US version of the first film in the Millennium trilogy?? The tix are valid anywhere playing the film except for the premium cinemas like Gold Class and La Premiere etc. It is also not valid TUESDAYS (at all) and Saturdays (After 5pm) - and my apologies but this competition is ONLY valid to Australian residents - it released last year everywhere else anyways
Good luck!!
The final chapter of the story sees Salander in intensive care and awaiting trial for murder. Unable to communicate with the outside world, she must rely on Blomkvist to prove her innocence and expose the political cover up that threatens to destroy her freedom. I was a HUGE fan of these books and could never put them down - there are definitely sections that were a struggle to get through due to the stories never being edited thanks to author unfortunately passing away before any of his books were published and becoming international mega hits.
Now if you like those English crime TV shows then you will love this, if you love a great tele movie then you will love this, if you have read the book a few years ago but have forgotten most of it then you will enjoy and probably understand this but if you remember it all and think this film deserves the attention to detail and arthouse blockbuster approach it needed then you will be sadly sadly disappointed. It is a B grade tele movie at best. This could also explain why you can even buy it already on DVD off Ebay and how it was released in 2009 in Europe but we are getting it in 2011.
It has taken the story of the book and very loosely adapted it - it has also dumbed it right down and removed so much of the story and/ or altered even more of it that I was open mouth shocked in some scenes. OK - some of it was really not needed in the book or the film. Erika never needed to be changing jobs in the middle of it all, but I really think Erika and the Monica Figuerola relationship needed to develop as did that of Blomkvist - it was completely removed. As did the entire partnership of Blomvkist with the security firm and the police, it was all missing or so watered down it was like a hint of cordial in a drink. They took the major plot points and then filmed it while removing most of the rest of it.
I was also mortified that the entire point of Salander dressing full punk was missed in the story and the fact that in this film Salander actually came across as boring. She spends the entire film either restrained or not speaking - how can this be fun for the viewer who worships her above all in the films. Another thing that bugged me that they changed was the way in which she gets and uses her communication with the outside world. LAME
That being said - I still love all the actors and I am unsure as to whether it is because they actually make something of the B grade film they are in or is it familiarity now after seeing them in a trilogy. For the first time in a long time I am more excited as to what they will do with the American remake of this being made by David Fincher. I think the budget will be much larger and I think they will ensure a lot more makes it into the film. It has always been my belief that the Swedish made this one rushed so they could get them all out prior to the US releasing them. The one thing I am worried about with the US version is Rooney Mara as Salander and Daniel Craig as Blomvkist. I am just so used to them being foreign it is going to spin me out hearing them talk in English. And I am sorry, Rooney Mara??? There is no Salander besides Noomi Rapace - they should have used her again!!
The biggest let down for this film is its lack of energy and the excitement the first one, and to a lesser extent, the second one contained. This is more court room drama than high octane energy with a psycho emo punk pulling the strings to achieve a goal. The critics out in the big wide web have been tearing it apart with descriptions of "A more apt title would be 'The Girl Who Sat Quietly in a Dimly Lit Room'." to the one I most agree with "This is the most disappointing end to a trilogy since Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3."
It is quite sad but the film is not absolutely woeful. If you just want to watch a film made from one of your all time fave books starring some great actors but made more for TV then you could really enjoy it. Make up your own mind and let me know what you think.
