HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA: A Review on Salty

September 20th 2012 08:21
: Review by Benny Boy
Seeing the trailers for Hotel Transylvania I was very interested to see how this movie would turn out. To me it was a unique idea in a pool of movies that have been overdone and reused. Hotel Transylvania takes the idea of monsters and completely flips it on its head. We are introduced to the overprotective Dracula (Adam Sandler) who runs a hotel for monsters to come and get away from it all. Here they can feel safe from humans who the monsters fear and dislike. Dracula's daughter has come of age, a young 118 years old, and like any person who has come of age she wants to get out and see the world. This is flipped on its head when a human (Andy Samberg) accidentally finds the hotel.

This is a fun light hearted movie that introduces the viewer to all the famous monsters Frankenstein, Werewolf and invisible man just to name a few and shows the side of them that isn't in the stories. Werewolf is my favourite and is voiced by the very talented Steve Buscemi. However there are some deeper themes that come into this movie and it is not all about monsters enjoying a hotel stay. True love and letting people make there own mistakes are the two big underlying themes that this movie alludes to. Children and adults will enjoy this movie equally but it is not going to be a game changer the likes of any of the Pixar animations.

One enjoyable thing to do while watching this movie was to pick who voiced all the characters. There are quite a few famous actors who voice the characters and I found it refreshing that this movie, unlike others, was sold on the merits of the plotline not on who featured in the film. Many animations these days rely on viewers going just so they can hear their favourite actor. However looking at posters after the movie I came to the realisation that there is no mention of who is in the film. The only mention is in the small print at the bottom which is standard on all posters.

I was also relieved to see (hear) Adam Sandler in a funny role once again. His over the top Dracula accent was done very well and made me laugh just by the simplest things he said. I hope this is a sign that Adam Sandler can still be funny and when some of his control is taken away from him he can still be in good movies.

Another small point is this is a great movie for kids who will laugh and stay focused but there were a few parts where in my opinion the younger children may get scared. It is not enough to skip the movie altogether but it will be enough to temporarily frighten them. The parts in question are when Drcula gets mad (about 3-4 times) he will go red, the camera will do a close up and he will look like the devil. Apart from these few scenes the creators of this movie have done excellently in making the monsters we are scared of more "humanised".

Without comparing it to the best-of-the-best ground breaking animations such as FINDING NEMO, WALL-E and TOY STORY I give it a 7.5/10
