I love these films!!
I just LOVE these films, they are so fun and light hearted and made for kids but also so light, bright and joyous with good themes and characters to love that you just can't help but fall in love with them.
I remember when the first one came out it was HUGE and the whole planet just loved it, but then second one was pretty crap and it looked like it was made on the cheap as more of a straight to DVD film but the third one came back strong and with a vengeance and kicked off the love for this franchise all over again and now this one - I JUST LOVE - I think equally with the first and the third.
Scrat's nutty pursuit of the cursed acorn, which he's been after since the dawn of time, has world-changing consequences - a continental cataclysm that triggers the greatest adventure of all for Manny, Diego and Sid. In the wake of these upheavals, Sid reunites with his cantankerous Granny, and the herd encounters a ragtag menagerie of seafaring pirates determined to stop them from returning home.
All your favourite characters are back and this time with a lot more actors voicing the characters. How is this list of them - impressive huh?
Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Queen Latifah, Seann William Scott, Josh Peck (Drake and Josh), Jennifer Lopez, Jeremy Renner dropped out as the evil Pirate Monkey to be replaced by personal favourite Peter Dinklage (the dwarf from Game of Thrones), Wanda Sykes, Keke Palmer (True Jackson), Nicky Minaj, Nick Frost and a bunch of ladies and gents I don't know
But the list of celebs is impressive and everything is voiced superbly. For the leads it must be like going home again for a few months of voice recording.
I think the success of these films is pretty easy to spot - they do the same thing over and over and just introduce new characters and a couple of basic new themes. I think this is why a lot of critics do not like them - they find it repetitive with nothing overly new - I say nay nay evil critics with frozen hearts - this is what makes the film work. Kids don't really give a shit about amazing plot development, although these films have them. Kids want colour, excitement and characters they love - why do you think kids will play the bloody Wiggles DVDs until the lining wears off? Because they love it, as they will this fabulous fabulous film.
The new lead characters you will appreciate in this film are firstly, the grown up daughter of Ellla and Manny - Peaches - is now a teenager and keen on boys and partying, much to Manny's stress levels. There is Captain Gutt, the evil Monkey Pirate who is voiced by Peter Dinklage - originally Jeremy Renner was going to voice Gutt but he pulled out at the last moment due to scheduling conflicts - damn you Jason Bourne
. Then there is Shira, a welcome love interest for Diego voiced by the sexy Jennifer Lopez.
And last but not least let us not forget the best part of these films - following the parallel adventures of Manny, Sid and Diego is Scrat - who completes these films and makes the movies. He randomly appears for absolute shenanigans in pursuit of his adversary, the acorn. He has an amazing story in this one that may explain the disappearance of Atlantis - oh - and nice cameo Captain Jean Luc Piccard
Oddly enough, but originally, the story was rumored to involve Manny, Sid, Diego, Ellie and Scrat frozen solid and accidentally defrosted in a museum in present day. The film was to be called "Ice Age: Th4w". I like this idea but the one they got was better - and I cannot wait until Ice Age 5 - they have to make it - it is a money making machine and they are yet to do the meteors and asteroids hitting the planet.
Ice Age 4: Continental Drift is out now and is great for the whole family - I do recommend the 3D for this one - it is worth a joyous 9 out of 10 insane Scrats.
