Welcome to Salty Popcorn - my site dedicated to expressing my opinion on films. Most of the reviews I read in the paper make me angry that they are either all so negative or I completely disagree with them. So now it's my turn. I hope you enjoy it and if you do sign up for updates on the left hand side. Thanks for stopping in!! Also, be sure to check out my other blogs www.sydneytable.com and http://www.orble.com/total-randomness/ PLEASE NOTE: My scoring of films is now based on an "Out of 10" score. Jackas 3D (7.5/10)

Thankgod for Mitch, formerly known on Salty as Jigsaw, until Saw 3D came out and we no longer want to be associated with the franchise . Damn fine review Mitch - peeps, suss out Mitch's review below.

Imagine a crew of reckless, rowdy, drunken pro-skateboarders breaking into James Cameron's warehouse and stealing his high tech 3D and super slow-motion cameras. Now imagine that they strap those expensive state-of-the-art cameras to their penises and film themselves creeping up behind unsuspecting crew members and pissing on them, getting charged at by enraged buffalo, shot mercilessly with paintballs and drowned in human excrement and presto... you've got Jackass 3D.

Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Steve-O, Jeff Tremaine

The origins of Jackass spawn from a skateboarding magazine in the 90's called Big Brother Magazine that, among others, a few of the cast and crew members worked for or contributed to. The more-or-less face of Jackass, Johnny Knoxville, originally conceived an idea of being the guinea pig for an article on self-defence weapons, allowing himself to get shot, stabbed, sprayed and tasered which went on to be captured on video at the suggestion of then magazine columnist Jeff Tremaine, who has since become the show/movies producer. After hype surrounding the footage began circulating, other like minded skaters and prankers who were friends of Tremaine and Knoxville began submitting tapes and ideas and, after Tremaine brought in his director friend Spike Jonze (Where The Wild Things Are), pitched the show to various networks to which MTV eventually picked up and turned it into one of their most lucrative investments ever. After 3 years, studio executives began to give the shows producers notes which didn't gel with the prank and stunt based nature of the show nor did it with the cast or crew so they bailed on MTV and produced Jackass: The Movie as a finale which, through the medium of cinema, would allow them to get away with much more than they ever could on television. Much to the surprise of the cast and crew, the immense profit and success brought on Jackass Number Two, a sequel released 4 years later and after an even bigger draw than it's predecessor and marking the 10th anniversary since the shows humble beginnings, brought on yet another sequel, 2010's Jackass 3D.

Jackass 3D is directed by Jeff Tremaine and stars it's familiar crew Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Steve-O, Ryan Dunn, Chris Pontius, Preston Lacy, Jason "Wee-Man" Acuna, Dave England and Ehren McGhehey with special appearances by several pro-skaters/riders/NFL players plus The Dudesons, Beavis and Butthead and Seann William Scott (Stifler from American Pie) and countless other familiar faces of the Jackass series.

The boys are back in absolute primo form and come up with some of the most inventive stunts and pranks of their careers and what makes it funnier is that some of the finer ones are filmed in either 3D or super-slow-motion. A picturesque panorama of miniature models on a countryside sets up a cleverly done slow-motion... ahem... poo volcano. The words "clever" and "poo-volcano" in the same sentence can only co-exist in the world of Jackass. The gross-out stunt to beat, to me, was always the Horse Semen one from Number Two but by combining Cling-Wrap, Preston Lacy (the resident fat guy) and Steve-O's absolute courage to step up to the plate and accomplish anything for the film, Jackass 3D has either tied with or outdone the grossest gross-out stunt they've ever pulled and it.. is.. gnarly!!!

The 3D isn't prominent for the entire movie, in fact, it's probably somewhat underused but considering the size of the 3D cameras, it understandably restricts the amount of moving the camera man can do when using it and these particular cameramen need to be able to move quickly in order to capture every part of the unpredictable pranks and stunts and also to avoid becoming victims themselves.
The high-speed cameras are used way more than the 3D effects which begs the question, why didn't they call it Slow-Ass?

In my opinion, Jackass Number Two is still the best of the trilogy but this one is a very close 2nd and streaks ahead of the original. It never seems as consistently "full-on" as it's predecessor in terms of inflicting pain or self-harm.. which most definitely isn't to say they've gone soft. The whole movie is still built around the notion of people hurting themselves but it's almost like they've built up such a tolerance to pain over the years that nothing short of being hit by a train will hurt them. However, having said that, the majority of the cast members have, at the very least, one major moment to themselves where they get absolutely f--ked on massively. Either way, the stunts that they come up with and pull off will definitely impress any fan who watches it and the movie as a whole will make you laugh uncontrollably. If there is one thing that they never cease to fail at, it's making an entire sell-out theatre choke with laughter. One of my personal favourites was them messing around with executing stunts behind a full throttle jet-engine and "Wee-Man's" bar brawl... utterly priceless!

The guys have an unbreakable camaraderie that outshines any brotherhood ever captured on film and despite the fact that they prey on each others phobias, intentionally push each others pain thresholds and severely restrict the amount of guard you can let down when in their company, they have produced what I think is one of the best feel good movies of the year.

Strange? Not if you think about it this way. Here you have an entire trilogy solely based around a crew of lifelong mates just being stupid and having fun. There is no villain. No pressure for any protagonist to achieve any goals by a certain deadline. No confrontation. No sadness. No politics. No depression. It's pure fun, caught on tape by a bunch of stupid mates presented with only one intention, to make people laugh.

The Jackass trilogy has a combined budget of $37million and has earned, so far, a combined gross of close to $300million and counting so it's no wonder that Paramount love these guys. A Jackass 3.5 is set to be released next year and, unlike the straight-to-dvd release of 2007's Jackass 2.5, the studio is in talks to possibly give it its own theatrical release but nothing has been confirmed as yet.

Having to top Number Two was always going to be difficult but Jackass 3D is a gut-bustingly hilarious effort and will stamp a grin on your face from beginning to end... 7.5/10
