The King's Speech is based on the true story of Queen Elizabeth II's father and his remarkable friendship with maverick speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). It charts the personal relationship that developed between England's reluctant King George VI (Colin Firth), plagued by a nervous stammer, and his irreverent Australian speech therapist.
As the second son of George V (Michael Gambon), Prince Albert "Bertie" was not expected to ascend to the throne, but when his brother Edward (Guy Pearce) abdicates to marry American Wallis Simpson (Eve Best), Bertie, as his successor, is crowned King George VI.
George becomes King as radio is taking off as a mass medium and the Second World War looms. Thrust into the international spotlight he must speak not only to the nation but to the people of the British Empire, across the world. His wife, Queen Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) - the future Queen Mother - is tireless in her belief in him. Having tried all the traditional doctors she engages unorthodox outsider, Logue, to help him find a voice that can inspire a nation on the brink of war.
This looks like an amazing dialogue driven film that will have so many brilliant actors in it that your eyes could ache. I smell Oscars galore for this film.
The King's Speech is a British historical drama film directed by Tom Hooper (currently in pre production on East of Eden) from a script by David Seidler (Tucker). The film won the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival People's Choice Award.
The film stars Colin Firth as King George VI and Geoffrey Rush as speech therapist Lionel Logue, who helped George VI overcome a stammer. Filming commenced in the United Kingdom in November 2009. The film is set for a limited release in the United States on 26 November 2010 and on general release across the UK on 7 January 2011. There is no confirmed release date for Australia as yet.
