Love love loved it!!
Of late I have been searching for something new and different to broaden my tastes in film - I am having issues with watching thousands of films every year and have started to see the similarities and studio control and complete lack of originality. Do not get me wrong - sometimes all you need is a comfort film like a good bowl of pumpkin soup and I love big budget US films a lot of the time but I am just losing interest in them and have been finding a lot of joy in foreign films that are being made with a different agenda. They are being made to tell a great story - not appeal to the test audiences and accommodate all the suggestions that are being made.
And it was with this film, Le Chef (or The Chef - if you prefer the English) that I found a barrel laughter film that is not majorly original - to me it was something like I would imagine a real life version of Ratatouille but it was just light hearted, fun and filled with an entire cast that are amazing. I was lost in the film and left glowing afterwards - and damn hungry
.
The Chef tells the story of Jacky Bonnot, who is a useless person at living but a master cook - he is a Masterchef orgasm - he can cook anything at all but has spent his life reproducing the great chefs recipes, especially his idol's Alexandre Lagarde. Lagarde, Jean Reno, renowned French chef. World famous for his traditional cuisine, Lagarde is currently under threat from the molecular gastronomy movement becoming ever popular in his home city of Paris. With pressure from management, and lacking inspiration, he must fight to maintain his coveted three stars, as otherwise he faces losing control of the restaurant that bears his name.
Reno is fabulous, I love him in everything, ever since I saw him in The Professional I thought he was just fantastic, he is not the best picker of roles but he has such a presence and his comic timing is impeccable. I completely buy him as a world renowned chef. Then there is Michael Youn as Jacky Bonnot who is the perfect partner in crime in this film for Reno - this film is Youn's and he owns it - he literally is a real life Remy from Ratatouille and he is a pleasure to watch.
There is such an ensemble of supporting actors in this one and they are all as important as the lead cast - everyone of them will put a smile on your face. Add to that the cast member known as food - and even wine. I love food and to see a food movie that is awesome is a double treat for me. I love traditional food and I also love gastronomy - why can't they just get along?? Then throw in the settings of the beautiful Paris and real life situation comedy and this film is a complete winner!
The film is out in Australia on June 14th and it will definitely only be at art house cinemas - I cannot recommend a more simple and pure film that is comedy and food extreme - get thee to the cinema!! Easily worth a tasty 9 out of 10 for me.
