Love Birds is a charming romantic comedy that tells the story of a regular Kiwi bloke who finds himself on a quest to find true love - all with the help of a native New Zealand Shelduck. Comedian Rhys Darby (Flight of the Conchords, The Boat That Rocked) plays Doug - a road working employee and massive fan of the legendary band Queen, along with Golden-Globe Award winning actress Sally Hawkins (Made In Dagenham) who plays Holly the sassy animal specialist.
Doug's happy and predictable life falls to pieces when his long-term girlfriend Susan (Faye Smythe) suddenly dumps him early one morning. Shattered, he cannot imagine moving on in life, but when an injured Paradise Shelduck (Pierre) crash-lands on his roof Doug can no longer feel sorry for himself and is compelled to nurse the Shelduck back to health.
Through Pierre, Doug discovers his own true place in the world and the belief in himself that will allow him to find true love with Holly. But the path of love is never easy and just when you think you've got a handle on it, it takes flight. Susan comes back into his life, and Doug must learn a valuable lesson, lean on his friends and follow his heart.
At first I though this was a tele movie released to DVD and it would be fodder but its charm grew on me and I ended up falling in love with this happy romantic feel good film in the same style as something like The Full Monty or Brassed Off. There is great chemistry between the two leads and all the actors are fantastic - including Bryan Brown who has a whacky part.
This is a great film, the whole family could enjoy and is a great rainy day movie that is uplifting and unpretentious. Also Doug's love and obsession with QUEEN is a great addition to the film and make sure you watch the film clip over the trailers at the end.
This is one to watch with your mum or your grandma - they will love it!! Worth a good 7 out of 10.
NOW - to win one of 5 copies of this on DVD be one of the first 5 to email me at jkdigitaldesigns@gmail.com with your address and answer to this question - what is the name of the Shellduck in the film (hint: see above). Also - apologies but this is only available to my readers in Australia.
Have a great day peeps!!
