The Best of the Trilogy
Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman are all back and still fighting to get home to their beloved Big Apple and of course, King Julien, Maurice and the Penguins are all along for the comedic adventure. And what an adventure this film is. For me it is easily better than the first two instalments added together. I do believe this will be the end of the franchise and they go out with a bang, with Marty stuffed into a cannon for good measure.
This film starts out quickly on the adventure and never once slows down - it is like a cartoon on crack - you will not tire and neither does the story. It never really falls into doldrums with that period of formulaic boredom in most comedies before the finale.
It starts out in Africa after Maurice and the Penguins abandon the crew in a natural environment that is sooooo boring. So the plan is to get themselves to Monte Carlo to get the penguins out of a casino, get on the plane and fly to New York. As you can imagine this is not going to go smoothly and many a shenanigan ensues
Including being chased by crazed animal control officer Captain Chantel DuBois (Frances McDormand) who wants Alex's head stuffed and mounted on her wall. For some reason DuBois reminds me of Cate Blanchett's role in the last Indiana Jones film and I really wanted Blanchett to voice this character but Frances - I LOVE U!
The thing with this instalment is that the lead characters are probably the most mundane and boring. King Julien, Maurice and the newcomers form the circus are what save this film and elevate it to new levels. Ben Stiller is just boring! Marty isn't much better, except for his Afro dance and Gloria and Melman still crack me up. But then King Julien and Maurice just have me spluttering popcorn across the aisle - I love them!!
I also thought the new stand out for me in this was Stefano the Seal (Martin Short). He takes loveable stupidity to new levels - loved him.
I had the pleasure of seeing this one with one of my school and long term besties, Michelle, and her two rugrats, who I love to pieces, Nath and Abs - the kids enjoyed it but for me hearing Michelle burst into laughter at Stefano's constant fails at being competent made the film. Hanging out with these three made the day
The 3D is pretty decent and this film is colourful - I mean rainbow gay vomit colourful. I loved it and every kid who sees this film will want a rainbow afro at the end of the film but some adults may not be huge fans - to me it made the film - it was like a story telling of a firework and that is how the grande finale is performed - a big musical number to Katy Perry's "Firework" - huge success.
Madagascar 3 hits cinemas this Thursday 13th and if you loved the first two you will love this and if you have an inner child get them to this film ASAP. Worth a happy and gay 9 out of 10 for this awesome animation!
