Meet Dave ($12-)
Dave Ming Chang (Eddie Murphy), newly arrived in New York City, may be the ultimate fish out of water. There's something about him that's not quite right – for starters, he seems remarkably out of place and uncomfortable in his own body. And for good reason: "Dave" is not a man at all, but a ship made in the image of its miniature-sized captain. It's Eddie Murphy in Eddie Murphy in "Meet Dave" and while his crew of miniature aliens are trying to save their planet, they encounter a new problem, as their ship becomes smitten with an Earth woman.
This was quite a nice little surprise to watch. I went in expecting not much and got more than I expected. It's an Eddie Murphy comedy and something that since his award winning and praised acting in the film Dreamgirls we thought we would see less of, instead expecting Eddie to move onto serious acting, something he does exceptionally well. But this is what Eddie loves doing and it is what he does best. This film won't win any awards, it won't even be a HUGE box office smash hit. But it will be a film most people can watch with their entire family and a film their entire family will enjoy.
Eddie is great, his ability to take on multiple characters in his comedic roles is talented versatility. In this he plays the space ship, Dave being captained by a mini Eddie and his difference in characters is handled well. There is a small pay out on Star Trek with the entire crew being numbered. "Number 2 Damage Report" being something Captain Piccard mentioned many times as Captain of the Enterprise. (I am such a Trekkie, LOL). Eddies facial gymnastic moves are hysterical, he can put his face into so many funny poses, and his ability to make fun of people without being offensive is first class. It's not a huge stretch for him to act this role but you could tell he had fun. Newcomer, Austyn Myers is great as Josh, the youngster, and son of the female lead/ love interest, he handles himself great with Eddie and they provide a Disneyesque emotionalism between the two life forms.
Elizabeth Banks is likable as the single mum who runs into Dave and becomes first human contact with the alien species. Elizabeth has become one of Hollywood's most sort after actresses of late. She has acted in numerous roles over the years, more notably as Betty Brant from the Spiderman movies - Betty is the lady who works for the newspaper as the nice young personal assistant of the editor. She has also starred in Catch Me if You Can with my acting god, Leo, The 40yr Old Virgin, Seabiscuit and most recently in Definitely Maybe. She also has six other high profile films coming out, in the controversial Zack and Miri Make a Porno by Kevin Smith, the newest Seth Rogan politically incorrect ride. And playing Laura Bush in Oliver Stones new political drama W. Plus this savvy hot lassy has her own production company in full swing, with a big budget Bruce Willis sci fi "Surrogates" in full production. What a woman!
Gabrielle Union is funny as "Number 3" but one of the biggest scene stealers was "Number 2" Ed Helms who also stars as Andy Bernard from The Office.
To bring some amazing special effects to the screen they employed LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring visual effects supervisor Mark Stanton and a talented Clay A. Griffith who was the production designer. To create the spaceship Dave they had to make the inside of a spaceship clearly resemble the inside of an Eddie Murphy. They did an amazing job with things like making the lift of the ship the spinal cord and patterning the ship's corridors after human looking vascular tubing, using veins and artery colored blues or red.
This won't overly please the serious filmies but it's a fun family film with some great laughs and good acting. If you have kids, this a great film to take them too. Worth $12-
