MOONRISE KINGDOM: A Review

August 27th 2012 04:25
: One of the best films of the year - GUARANTEED
Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, Moonrise Kingdom tells the story of two twelve-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing off-shore -- and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in more ways than anyone can handle. Bruce Willis plays the local sheriff. Edward Norton is a Khaki Scout troop leader. Bill Murray and Frances McDormand portray the young girl's parents. The cast also includes Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, and Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward as the boy and girl.

This is what Focus Films describes their movie as and it reads quite mundane, what they fail to mention in their blurb is that this is quite possibly the best film of the year and one of the most exciting films I have seen in a very very long time that is not Batman . You may have noticed I have not written any articles in three weeks on any of my blogs. The good news is I am back so you can stop crying you whining little sissy I have moved away from my psychotic and bloody crazy flatmate from the posh areas of Manly to my own three bedroom house just off the beach in Terrigal on the Central Coast - AMAZING sea change! I keep unpacking and wanting to go straight home after work so have not seen too many films - but when I was invited to this one I had to go and what a perfect film to reignite my passion for blogging - it is superb!!

Wes Anderson, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray

In your typical Wes Anderson style the film is completely insane and everyone has multitudes of issues but the things is a glass full of black comedy and is one of the most cleverest films out this year with some of the best characters you will see on screen and it is filmed as if it is a movie from 1965 - it is just all round brilliant!

Wes Anderson, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray

What a cast, what a cast - I want to sing praise from the top of a mountain. Firstly it cannot be a Wes Anderson film unless there is Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman in it and they both have great support roles. Schwartzman's role is a lot smaller than usual but no less impacting. Bill Murray plays Mr Bishop, the husband of Mrs Bishop (Frances McDormand) and father of Suzy. The husband/wife relationship of the Bishops is just hysterical and a very black comic look at how a lot of long term relationships actually are. The two of them are just the perfect couple lol.

Wes Anderson, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray

Then there is Edward Norton who just cracks me up through most of the film - this is definitely not a role I would imagine him in but I honestly think people would give away their salaries and beg for roles in Wes Anderson's movies - they are just so much fun and how they manage to play their roles without crying with laughter I will never know. The same goes for Tilda Swinton who plays the character SOCIAL SERVICES, and Harvey Keitel who plays Commander Pierce. You can see them having so much fun in their small roles that the film just shines from it. And then throw in Bruce Willis who is more his character from Death Becomes Her than John McClane. He is also having heaps of fun, although his character is generally a miserable sod who holds the law together on the tiny island. And Bob Balaban as the narrator just makes me giggle - I had to mention him, he is awesome!

Wes Anderson, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray

But we have to mention the kids as they are just brilliant and pretty much lead the movie, Jared Gilman plays Sam and this is his first film and he is just perfect in this role. He is the geeky, hipster, Daniel Boone who is years older than his actual age and carrying a world of problems on his back that he deals with all very matter-of-factly. The kid is an hysterical dead pan genius. He stands out in this film and Kara Hayward as Suzy nearly stands out as much. They are a perfect crazy couple of 12yr olds in love hahaha.

Wes Anderson, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray

I don't know how to explain this film. It is very much a Wes Anderson film - if you loved The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic, The Darjeeling Limited and so on then you will love this film. I honestly think it is his best work - it is the one I truly love the most. It is kind of like Millions meets Where the Wild Things Are meets Modern Family but not at all - this one is too hard to compare. But Anderson knows how to make a brilliant film and this one has cinemagasm cinematography, a script of the most dry witted humour and delightful music that all comes from a mind from another planet - Wes Anderson I love you!

Wes Anderson, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray

Trust me - it is perfect and it is out now on an art house limited release and is one of those films you should drive 300ks if that is how far you have to get to see it playing somewhere. Must see, I am seeing it again this week and pre-ordering it on Blu Ray if I can - worth 10 out of 10 crazy hipster tween love birds.
