My Bloody Valentine 3D ($11-)
The first R-rated film projected in Real D technology is a total slasher teenage flick of old. It has guts flying everywhere, jaws hurtling through the cinema and more blood splashes than you can think of. And don't forget the pick axe flying at your face in full 3D effect. If this is what you are after and you are in no way there to take the film seriously then this is one top flick.
A decade after traumatized miner Harry Warden goes on a pickaxe massacre, guilt-stricken Tom (Jensen Ackles) returns to his quaint hometown only to find that a string of similar murders has started up. With Warden believed to be long dead, Sheriff Axel casts suspicion on Tom. It seems his old flame, Sarah, is the only one who truly believes he’s innocent.
Jensen Ackles is great and with the setting of the film it could pass for a big budget episode of Supernatural, he even wears the same clothes, but it was sad to see him being such a chicken in the first half, I wanted Dean Winchester kicking ass. But things get better. This isn't just a Supernatural episode, it's a melding of all horror slasher flicks of the past. There are moments of Scream, Friday the 13th and Halloween all rolled into one. This could re-ignite slasher film worship from teens and gore lovers alike. While at times scary the violence is so over the top for 3D effect that I pissed myself with laughter on many occasions.
The plot is kind of shakey and some of the attack scenes just came out of nowhere and for me seemed just for the sake of violence and slasher joy as opposed to furthering the story and I did get one scare - the first full 3D vagina I have seen in years.
They are lovely if that is your thing but I did not expect it and jumped out of my seat (jokes). I think the film would be majorly loved by Quentin Tarantino and his grindhouse film loving.
It is good to see Kerr Smith onscreen again since his stint on Dawson's Creek as the "gay dude" but his acting is shocking, embarassing even and he was so unbelievable as the sheriff. Someone a bit older that gets slaughtered would have been my casting genious at work.
If you is up for some slashing then grab your tix now. Rated R and out now - in 3D at selected cinemas. Don't bother with the 2D - go the full effect with glasses and all. Worth $11-

I saw the movie this afternoon with my younger bro, but aimed to review it for tomorrow. However my review will differ considerably from yours!
The 3D gimmick worked a treat, but the movie was dreadful. It failed on so many levels as a horror movie.
If I was using your rating method I'd give the movie a $5- and that's really only for the 3D experience. I can't wait til more and more movies use this technology.
I wonder if James Cameron's Avatar will be using this or a more advanced version? Eventually they want to produce them so you don't wear the specially-polarised (or whatever they are) spectacles.
Sure the movie was graphically gory, but I thought the sfx makeup was shoddy for the most part, and the screenplay was riddled with continuity and implausibilities. The movie was taking itself seriously, it seemed to me, which made it even worse. And the acting! Don't get me started! Anyway, enough ranting from me, you'll get the whole story tomorrow! I just had to plant my two cents here, cos you posted your review first.
How could you give it $11-??! You were temporarily blind-sided by the 3D effect perhaps?
I can't wait til my special edition of the original movie arrives, so I can review that too! I've waited years for the uncut version!

I agree I liked the 3D a lot. I. however, am not completely sold on 3D - James Cameron is using this technology and I am concerned, as to me, 3D is too dark and I hate the glasses. I wrote about it in my last 3D review talking about light levels and so on. I thikn it is was for Bolt in 3D.
To me the price is for the laughs and the gore. Yes, it was totally over the top and a B grade film and quite crap - but that's what I loved.
The acting was woeful but Jensen was Jensen - his same character from Supernatural - a show I love. Kerr on the other hand - OMG he was bad, as were a lot of the supporting cast.
The SFX make up was part of the fun for me - it was grindhouse slasher sloppy fun.
They have been experimenting on 3D without glasses but I think it's a little way off.
I would LOVE to see the original - only found out this afternoon it was even a remake, will suss out the DVD store.
I had fun and laughed at the film and the gory scares - that was the reason I scored $11-.
Thanks!

On the one hand, Funny Games is a real horror movie (even if Haneke would prefer to think more intellectually), whereas My Bloody Valentine is the worst because it takes itself seriously, yet fails to deliver on what a real horror movie should possess: atmosphere and convincing production values, which includes acting!

A shadow of herself
Zoolander was given a bad rap by one of our local reviewers, yet I loved the film and have seen it countless times. It's not the greatest, but it does make me feel good and gives me a good laugh. Everybody sees something different, it makes the world more interesting.
I'll not be seeing My Bloody Valentine, too scarey for a chicken like me ....

I will agree the production values weren't close to sniffing awards but I don't care - I got on a rollercoaster ride and enjoyed the trip.
Elizabeth - thanks for popping in and glad you enjoyed the read/ debate
Funny you mention Zoolander - I hated it. I get the feeling you got when watching Ace Ventura - I suppose I just like Jim Carrey. And yes - our differences of opinion is what makes blogging fun to read and write on.
Thanks Guys
