82nd Academy Award Nominations Are In

The 82nd Academy Award nominees were announced earlier this morning, officially starting the countdown for the culmination of awards season! Lots of familiar faces peppered the nominees, with films like "Avatar" and "Up in the Air" and "The Hurt Locker" receiving multiple nominations. "Avatar" and "The Hurt Locker" tied for most nominations, with nine each. "Inglourious Basterds" received 8 nominations and "Up in the Air" and "Precious" both walked away with six nods.

Congratulation to Avatar for the nine nominations here...

Honestly, I thought that Avatar will be nominated for the "Best Makeup" category as well, Jason. However, it didn't seem to qualify into this section.

No matter what, I predicted that Avatar is going to be the biggest winner for this Grammy award.

What bought about the idea that there were 10 in the best picture category? As aI have posted earlier, I loved Up in the Air. But why is it that this year has so many more contenders than past years?

You are more "in theknow" than me. But I would really like to know.

It is great news for Avatar and I said the same thing to a few of my staff yesterday BUT they did explain to me that most of the cast of Avatar are not wearing make-up - it is CGI!! It is going to be close this year I think - The Hurt Locker is definately going to give Avatar a run for its money

Janet - this is what I could find from the Oscars website:
“After more than six decades, the Academy is returning to some of its earlier roots, when a wider field competed for the top award of the year,” said Ganis. “The final outcome, of course, will be the same – one Best Picture winner – but the race to the finish line will feature 10, not just five, great movies from 2009.”

For more than a decade during the Academy’s earlier years, the Best Picture category welcomed more than five films; for nine years there were 10 nominees. The 16th Academy Awards (1943) was the last year to include a field of that size; “Casablanca” was named Best Picture. (In 1931/32, there were eight nominees and in 1934 and 1935 there were 12 nominees.)
