Best Comedy of the Year
Category: No Category
I am by no means a Will Ferrell fan, I have liked some of his work but I have a general issue with comedy and comedians. I feel that after you have seen them in about three films you have pretty much seen all the comedy they can do and they get tired. It has happened to pretty much all of them. Yeah, they can be funny but you have seen it all before. To be honest the only comedian who, for me, rises above this is Jim Carrey. I just love the guy and grew up watching In Living Color so I think I may be biased and swayed by growing up watching his hysterics on the TV show. It also helps that he can succesfully go between drama and comedy to give him a succesful repertoire.
The first couple of films I watched Ferrell in I liked but did not love and then I just kind of sighed at every new film coming out starring him. So it was with some trepidation that I headed to watch this film with one of my very first boyfriends, Toby, and I have to say that I think it is one of the best comedies of the year and I laughed through the entire film and was entertained way beyond my expectations. I will go as far as saying that this is Ferrell's best comedy film and I cannot wait to watch it again and will even be buying it on Blu Ray once it is released.
The film is about two completely mismatched New York "detectives" who act like two kids on a playground fighting over a cheese stick. They try to step up and become hero cops after their idols disappear. This is where things go mental. One of them has been demoted to a desk job because he shot a famous baseball player who couldn't hear his instructions at the final game of the year causing them the game and the other likes to work as an accountant because he prefers to remain calm, and without any external influences after a shady past at college as a pimp.
This is another pairing of Will Ferrell with comedy director Adam McKay who has brought us Anchorman, Talladega Nights and Step Brothers. I loved Anchorman and I think I burst my appendix laughing in Talladega Nights. I haven't actually seen Step Brothers but out of the three I have seen this one wins for me. It appeals to my sense of humor, the comedy is mostly dry and very effective with at least 9 out of every 10 gags being succesful. The humor is so "out there" and absolutely ludicrous but I found it refreshing and worthy of stitches from laughter. Ferrell is in his element being totally insane and his ability to drag out a humorous description of something amazes me. Nearly everything in this film he does is funny, even when talking serious I found him amusing, this character is brilliant and I wouldn't be disappointed if I heard of a sequel. It is a modern Beverly Hills Cop minus any credible drama or sense of morality. Bring it on I say
.
Mark Wahlberg had been wanting to be in a comedy for ages, not as a cameo but in a full blown comedy and in an interview I watched this week he said there was no one better do it with than the funniest guy in film at the moment with the best comedy director there is. Nice work Wahlberg - this role is perfect for you. Wahlberg is the ideal "odd couple" partner for Ferrell. While not a comedian, his timing, situation comedy and bouncebacks with Ferrell make the film. He just needed to take his shirt off a few times and the film could have gotten a 10 hahahaha. The scenes with him, Ferrell and Eva Mendes were hysterical, he is like a puppy in her presence.
Besides the standout comedy the film also some spectacular action scenes and a superb supporting cast who are all over the top and perfectly cast for their comedy. Samuel L Jackson and The Rock, I hate calling him Dwayne, are off their heads and Michael Keaton is as much a nutcase as everyone else. Eva Mendes is just mind blowingly a perfect female and her relationship with Ferrell is so wrong it is perfect.
If you want a good laugh, don't mind everything being outrageous and are keen on a good night out then head to watch this at cinemas as of tomorrow, Thursday 9th September. Worth 8 out of 10.

I really liked Stranger than Fiction - Emma Thompson is one of my fave lady actors - she totally rocks. Have not even heard of Winter Passing - will have to suss it out. Thanks for the heads up.
