Welcome to Salty Popcorn - my site dedicated to expressing my opinion on films. Most of the reviews I read in the paper make me angry that they are either all so negative or I completely disagree with them. So now it's my turn. I hope you enjoy it and if you do sign up for updates on the left hand side. Thanks for stopping in!! Also, be sure to check out my other blogs www.sydneytable.com and http://www.orble.com/total-randomness/ PLEASE NOTE: My scoring of films is now based on an "Out of 10" score. Point Break ($14.50)

Pure Keanu and Swayze GOLD! Released in the early 90's this is up there with Die Hard as one of the best adrenaline non-stop action films of all time. Throw in Keanu looking the best he ever did (OMG - he looks sensational in this film) and acting the best he ever did then this film was destined for brilliance.

The cast for this film, at the time of release, were considered some of the most popular actors there could be. Keanu - GOD for the lustful and stoners alike, Patrick Swayze, hey he was in Ghost and Dirty Dancing - need I say more. Lori Petty was starting her career after many TV appearances and this role lifted her into the A league for a while, Gary Busey was already a cult actor who was awesome and made heaps of money to support his habit. John C. McGinley played his discover role and also probably his only audition necessary for Scrubs as the angry wise cracking FBI Agent Ben Harp with the most famous line of the movie "......young, dumb and full of cum". Director Kathryn Bigelow, at the time of filming, Mrs James Cameron, created what would become the first extreme sports film and a film I believe is one of the first films for the MTV generation.

Johnny Utah (Reeves) is a Special Agent for the FBI. Utah gets partnered with Angelo Pappas (Gary Busey) an experienced agent who is more than committed to his work. The two are asked to investigate the number of robberies committed by a group called the Ex-Presidents, who wears masks of Presidents Reagen, Nixon, Carter and Johnson for their robberies. Pappas has a theory that the Ex-Presidents are a group of surfers, and asks for Utah to go undercover as a surfer. The problem is, Utah couldn't surf to save his life. That plus the two continuously being hassled by unpleasant and rough Agent Harp (McGinley). With the help of Tyler (Petty) a competent female surfer, Utah begins to gain the respect of local surfer Bodhi (Swayze) and his group. Utah forms a close bond with Bodhi, but the relationship between Utah and Bodhi becomes limited when Utah suspects that Bodhi and his group are the Ex-Presidents.

Trivia:
1) Keanu Reeves observed real FBI agents in L.A. to study for the role. He also practiced with UCLA quarterback coaches to help with football scene.
2) Patrick Swayze is an accomplished skydiver and actually took part in the big skydiving scene.
3) Patrick's Roadhouse is an actual restaurant and bar in Santa Monica, CA.
4) Tyler explains to Johnny Utah that Patrick Swayze's character is named Bodhi, the Bodhisattva. Bodhisattva is a term in the Buddhist religion meaning an enlightened being who, out of compassion, forgoes nirvana in order to save others. Bodhi means "wakefulness".
5) Matthew Broderick was originally offered the role of Johnny Utah.
6) Johnny Depp originally auditioned for the part of Johnny Utah.
7) Charlie Sheen auditioned for the part of Johnny Utah.
8) Keanu Reeves, who learned to surf for his role still surfs as a hobby to this day.
9)The ex-presidents' masks are of Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and Lyndon Johnson.
10) Johnny is reporting to Angelo on Bhodi's movements that day. He comments on how he goes and eats lunch at "Patrick's Roadhouse", which is an actual restaurant in LA. Also a reference to Patrick Swayze's movie Road House (1989).
11) Elizabeth Berkley had a small scene in the movie, but it was cut out.
12) When Bodhi (Patrick Swayze) is introduced to Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves) on the beach, he remarks that Utah's surfboard reminds him of a '57 Chevy he used to have. Swayze previously drove a '57 Chevy in Dirty Dancing (1987).
13) The word "f*ck" is said 105 times.

The film has some stunning surf, surfing and surfers plus it has extreme skydiving, wild parties, great music and good guys/ bad guys. What more could you ask for in an action film. Well worth $14.50 and availble to rent or buy now.

Great review I only watched this for the first time about 2 weeks ago purely to amp myself up for my summer break. Now all I want to do is go skydiving.

Geoff - do it - it is so true what they say. It's better than sex - even when doing it right! And screw the cost - it's worth robbing your grandma for this experience.
If you is in Sydney you can do the best skydiving just outside of Woolongong - you jump over the coastline so see green on one side and total ocean on the other. It was the best experience I have had so far in this life. Freefalling is like a 60sec orgasm. LOL

Morgan - close, the Chilli Peppers are the drug dealers they think are the Ex Presidents. Anthony looks off his face the whole time.

Thanks heaps for commenting guys!!!
