Welcome to Salty Popcorn - my site dedicated to expressing my opinion on films. Most of the reviews I read in the paper make me angry that they are either all so negative or I completely disagree with them. So now it's my turn. I hope you enjoy it and if you do sign up for updates on the left hand side. Thanks for stopping in!! Also, be sure to check out my other blogs www.sydneytable.com and http://www.orble.com/total-randomness/ PLEASE NOTE: My scoring of films is now based on an "Out of 10" score. R2D2 is in Star Trek

It has been revealed Paramount purposefully but an R2D2 cameo in the new Star Trek movie. Did you see him in there? I certainly didn’t… but now I’m going to be looking for him the next time I go.

Paramount has even made a contest out of it. Find R2D2 and you could win an official prop from the movie.

MTV gives these details:

There’s really not much more to tell you. The rules are pretty simple. Locate R2, write down where you saw him in an e-mail, and shoot it off to facebook@paramount.com with “STAR TREK Easter Egg Sweepstakes” in the subject line. I couldn’t care less about winning the prop, but it would warm this “Star Wars” geek’s heart to see the plucky little droid pop up in a “Star Trek” movie. Maybe J.J. will figure out a way to kill off Jar Jar for his second “Trek” go-round.

Sounds pretty cool - I'll be sure to look out for the little guy when we go to see the movie soon.

I am off to watch it again tomorrow Helen so will endeavour to find it but stuck my head in the cinema today where I thought it would be and could not find it.

Morgan - I know - bloody impossible - I thought he could be in a ship that flys past or something or in the hangar bay - but no luck so far. It will turn up on You Tube in a couple of weeks.

Friends of mine still tell me that Godzilla was on the poster in the clouds - rubbish!! I have the poster framed in my lounge room and there is no Godzilla - but I do remember seeing the meteor crash at the end of the film.

Sounds pretty silly actually ... Star Trek is set several hundreds of years from now, and the Star Wars movies take place "a long time ago", suggesting hundreds of years earlier. Could an individual droid really last that long, or is it simply another R2D2 ...? Am I being academic, or simply being as silly as the question I'm posing?

R2D2 is the model of a droid, not our "R2" from Star Wars - it's an easter egg/ cameo to bridge the rivalry between two famous sci fis. I wouldn't read too much into it. For all we know it could be a sticker of R2 on the back of a car or bike. If Star Wars was set a long time ago then it would be possible that Star Wars was a famous movie in the Trek history and like the use of Nokia, an old car and The Beastie Boys in the film could be another part of historic nostalgia.

or... a long time ago might refer to a time in the future of Star Trek...at warp speed... it's a B Grade style sci fi for heavens sake, albeit with much better SFX!

I worked with the guy that built R2D2.. the film we worked on eventually tanked and got sold off after one year pre production, you would know it as Total Recall.

cheers

WOW - I take it Arnie wasn't on board from your original pre production. Or Sharon Stone getting her ass kicked. That's really cool Fog!

Taking the parental units to watch Star Trek tonight. I just can't get enough of it and have narrowed down where I think R2 will appear - hopefully tonight I will find him.

Use the force young horrorphile, you know R2D2 is only Yoda in robot form. haha... I just think R2 is the behind all the great victories. Look for him in a key winning moment.

Jason,

If this is not a hoax, then my guess is that he is not real size and that*s why no one has found him yet. I*m thinking miniture, like in a background or on a com panel or something ~ like an R2D2 shape of lights and lines? Or on some kids teddy's space jacket as the first evacuation scenes blast off the screen into your face . .

Like Disney used to have all those hidden mickey*s ~ subtle.

Bet you a googie egg I*m right, when it does airbrush show up on You Tube.

LOL Jake!!

I did some research and it appears that he may cameo at the start of the film (massive losing streak sorry Jake) At the beginning of the movie when the Kelvin is attacked by the Narada, on the top hull of the Kelvin are repair droids that look like R2 units. Pretty sure R2D2 was one of them.

Do not take this as gospel from me - until I see it with my own eyes, hopefully tonight, it will remain a mystery.

Lilla - the bet is ON!

Hi Jason,

no, Arnold wasn't cast, we had Sam Neil lined up, but, the US dollar dropped, and De Laurentis had to answer to his backers, for the first time in his career I think, and they wanted Arnie.

Bruce Beresford was directing it, (we were based in Sydney), and we had the original sound stage built, that later became MovieWorld on the Gold Coast, but our model making and Art Departments etc were based in Sydney Show Grounds (when not in use, film makers used the buildings there).

We spent over $6,000,000- in over a year, in pre-production, then shot two minutes of film, on a panavision gold (in the middle of Sydney CBD during the day), to try and convince the backers, but, Beresford said if he had to direct Arnie, it would be the last thing he did in film.

I actually worked as a combination of 3rd AD, standby props and stunt driver on that 2 min. clip, rather fun it was too, with just a stripped down crew to get the job done.

John Steers was the guy who made Star Wars R2D2, Cp3O, light sabres etc and he also built the 007 Aston Martin, for Goldfinger, and all the gadgets on that (at the time the prototype DB5) were actual working mechanicals, not like today with the CGI stuff.

Oops, sorry Jason, I am ranting on too long, memories...

cheers

fog

WOW..I just looked John up on the net, and didn't know he had died...gee... I might now write a small tribute to the man I knew, winner of two Academy Awards....damn...dammit

That is so cool FOG - sounds like heaps of fun. I have a few younger friends working on films at Fox at the moment and they love it but live on 2min noodles.

John Steers sounds like a very talented man - look forward to reading your tribute.

And everyone - I watched Star Trek again last night and could not find him anywhere, by the end of it I wanted to kill R2. What I noticed was that on the roof of The Enterprise it looks like an R2 is inserted into the ship like he was on the X Wing, I also sware I saw a monitor during the movie with R2 in lower right hand corner. I also think the pod ejection scene with Kirk in the pod was very similar to the R2/ C3PO pod ejection scene in Star Wars. Besides that - no repair droids and me seeing R2 everywhere now.

Hi Jason,

When i watched this i thought that Scotty's little alien friend was a Jawa with its hood off. Maybe it had scavenged an R2 unit and the parts are lying around the workshop?

I'll check it out next time i watch it.

I looked everywhere in that scene - could not find anything. Let us know if you see it.
