Yay Santa Horror
WOW - this film is awesome. Both Tim Burton and The Brothers Grimm would be elated watching this. It takes the tale of Santa and makes it evil
Just think THE THING meets Christmas and you are on the money.
It's the eve of Christmas in northern Finland and an "archeological" dig has just unearthed the real Santa Claus. But this particular Santa isn't the one you want coming to town. When all the local children begin mysteriously disappearing, young Pietari and his father Rauno, a reindeer hunter by trade, capture the mythological being and attempt to sell Santa to the misguided leader of the multinational corporation sponsoring the dig. Santa's elves, however, will stop at nothing to free their fearless leader from captivity. What ensues is a wildly humorous nightmare - a fantastically bizarre polemic on modern day morality. "Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale" is a re-imagining of the most classic of all childhood fantasies, and is a darkly comic gem soon to be required perennial holiday viewing.
I don't know where to start - the film is brilliant! OK - the best part of the film that thoroughly impressed me was the cinematography and originality of the story. It takes something so happy and that we take for granted and turns into a horror film that is dark comedy, totally believable and superbly executed.
The cast is brilliant and have that foreign differences to them that make it all the more believable and creepy. Real life father and son duo Omni and Jorma Tommila steal the show with young Omni a total hit - I want to see this kid in more - he easily carries the lead role perfectly. And where the hell they found so many old and naked santa look a likes I will never know.
There were two things that were a bit odd to me - 1) who in their right mind would allow a kid to hang onto the outside of a helicopter lifted netting and fly through a snowstorm - bad dad
- you will also notice a faux pas in continuity here - Pietari flies for ages hanging onto the side of this huge netting under a helicopter - the whole time he is barehanded but when he lands he surprisingly has gloves on
Ooops. And 2) I don't understand how they can sell Santas all around the world - I love the concept but how???
I would have had this in my top 11 of 2011 if I had saw it last year but for a Blu Ray release I would give it a 9 out of 10 - fantastical horror at its best and looking amazing!!
