Finally - after close to a week we have internet back on in the house. I hadn't realised how reliant for the net we all are these days. Anyways - I am about 10 articles behind and have been double booked for screenings this week so Salty's horror writer, Jigsaw, headed along to this screening with my stepdad while I was watching The Town and it appears that the beautiful Milla could not impress him even in spectacular 3D.
In 2002, when Paul W. S. Anderson (Mortal Kombat, Event Horizon) directed "Resident Evil", a movie based on a video-game about a hot chick in a red dress who kills zombies, who'd have thought it'd become the most successful game-to-movie franchise of all time and that he'd be back almost a decade later to continue the sequels with a 4th installment? If you didn't raise your hand, congratulations on being normal.
The "Resident Evil" games are scary as hell but you don't need to play them to understand the movie. Fans of the games though will continue to get a kick out of seeing the world of Alice and the Umbrella Corporation come to life.
"Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D" is the 4th installment in the series and the first the be filmed in 3D. It's also the first film to use James Cameron's own "Fusion" 3D technology since he invented it and used it to film "Avatar" (2009).
PLOT
After the events of "Resident Evil: Extinction", Alice (Milla Jovovich - the hot red headed chick from "The Fifth Element") is alone again, continuing her search for salvation and survivors in the aftermath of a biochemical hazard that turned the human race into zombies. On her quest, she re-teams with past ally Clare (Ali Larter - TV's "Heroes" and "Final Destination") whom she must help cure of memory loss and a group of survivors who have barricaded themselves in an abandoned jail to hunt down the head of the villainous company who is responsible for the viral outbreak, Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts) of The Umbrella Corporation.
It's tricky to review a film that offers nothing new in terms of story, imagination or action which is pretty devastating because usually, all that these movies have going for them is awesome action sequences. Despite the game being notoriously scary, the movie franchise has never played the horror card enough, instead favouring the more action/sci-fi route so even the zombies themselves this time are downplayed to mere background characters for the majority of the film which, in my opinion, really, really sucked!
The acting is fine, nothing special but not cringeworthy either.. well, until you meet the main villain Albert Wesker who resembles a bad Matrix knock off mixed with a douche bag Euro-Trance DJ.
The special effects range from shoddy to pretty damn impressive. This film is very much a visual feast and the 3D is actually used quite well but at times, the super-slow motion stuff, although stylish, can get a little repetitive. Unfortunately, the amazing 3D and visual sequences just seem to get washed from your memory by the rather dull rest of the film. I love zombie films, love action films and love Milla Jovovich
but the only thing this movie has going for it is it's use of 3D and some of it's visuals which unfortunately just wasn't enough to keep me entertained for 95 minutes.
"Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D" is pretty forgettable... 3/10
Note from JK: Don't forget the film also has the uber hot sex god Wentworth Miller (from Prison Break fame) in it
Big thanks Jigsaw.
