Welcome to Salty Popcorn - my site dedicated to expressing my opinion on films. Most of the reviews I read in the paper make me angry that they are either all so negative or I completely disagree with them. So now it's my turn. I hope you enjoy it and if you do sign up for updates on the left hand side. Thanks for stopping in!! PLEASE NOTE: My scoring of films is now based on an "Out of 10" score. Review: Southland Tales

SOUTHLAND TALES (2006) $7-
After finally discovering the maker of one of my all time favourite films, Donnie Darko, was releasing his second directed film in 5yrs (since Donnie), I nearly choked on my own salivation at what I could expect.

It was a film about his favourite topic - the end of the world. This was going to be momentous!!! It had a superb cast that would make it unbloody believable. Sarah Michelle Gellar fully stripping her Buffy image and going a bit R rated, The Rock in his first film not to be known as The Rock but Dwayne Johnson, Sean William Scott, Justin Timberlake in what I thought was the best role for the film and superbly & surprisingly done, Mandy Moore, John Lovitz & Miranda Richardson to name a few!!!!!

Plot Summary:
California is at the epicenter of a political and environmental disaster that threatens to destroy the world in this ambitious fusion of comedy, drama, dystopia science fiction, and music. In the year 2005, a nuclear attack wipes out part of the state of Texas, and three years later America is a virtual police state, with the government taking control of nearly every part of people's lives, supposedly for their own good. A German firm has found a way to generate energy using seawater, but both public and private concerns are desperate to prevent the new technology from being introduced in the gasoline-starved United States. A Marxist underground based on the West Coast is determined to bring down the federal government through violent revolution. In this midst of this chaos, we follow a number of stories that continually return to three principle characters. Boxer Santaros is an actor famous for his role in action films; he's trying to secure financing for a new project, but reality keeps mirroring the events in his script and he struggles to hold on to his identity following a bout with amnesia. Krysta Now is a porn star who is reinventing herself as a television pundit offering her views on politics, contemporary culture, and teenage sex. And Roland Taverner is an L.A. police officer whose identity has mysteriously split in two and he struggles to track down his other half. Written by The GuyInThePj's

Richard Kelly has been described as a genius. Donnie Darko was applauded as a masterpiece and the apocalypse appears to be his field but let's be honest. This film is PURE S H I T. It tries to hard to be arty and falls flat on its face. Did the studio not see anything in this film? I understand it was released on 63 screens in the US and made a massive 37000- on opening day. It is so confusing it makes Cronenberg films look like Disney Cartoons and this is half the problem - art geeks have united and are claiming it is one of the most amazing things ever made. I admit it's shot well, the visuals are stunning, the acting is fine (especially Justin Timberlake) but the story has too many characters that you can't keep up with what's going on and you don't even know what you are trying to keep up with as the entire plot is senseless.
This is what one person thought of it from IMDB: "Immediately after watching this movie I lost the use of both my legs and somehow could speak fluent portugese. My girlfriend also immediately became 7 months pregnant. Has anything like this happened to anyone else?"
Southland Tales grossed $275,380 at the North American box office, and $81,028 elsewhere, making a worldwide total of $356,408, falling far short of the film's $15-17 million budget.
It is just too difficult to watch and am so saddened that it is pure schlop. Don't even bother on DVD OR TV. CRAP $7- Out this week on DVD in Australia.

I agree with you that this film is confusing; it really is all over the place in its attempts to be arty. I felt like I'd missed something important in the plot.... for the entire movie. Very odd.

This one had me excited for about a nano-second till I discovered that all the leads are actors (using the word loosely) that I despise. It takes a gift to make something so attractive look this repulsive, but thats what the cast of Southland Tales did.

I will check it out at some stage because I'm a massive Darko man, but have little expectations...I love confusing as long as its worthwhile, this sounds like its not...thanks for another of the many warnings I've had for this film.

I only discovered this films existence a few days ago when researching my post Buffy Cast: Where Are They Now? but even the trailers on You Tube looked woeful.

You've just ensured that I don't waste my hard earned dollars on renting the DVD. Thanks!

Is it out on DVD?
Gee, I was so anticipating this one ... perhaps it was cooked for too long?

It wasn't the cast that made it shit - they were probably the only thing that kept me watching. The story could have been much better - it was way too ambitious - I was thinking last night about it more and think maybe the narrator screwed it up a bit at the beginning explaining too much unnecessary stuff and half the characters didn't need to exist. It is kind of like overloading the film with crap. STUPID FILM - LOL

I only found out it existed while waiting for a friend outside a DVD store and the poster was in the window - got so excited to be SSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOO disappointed. Save the money and rent out September - see my review for it a week or two ago.

Unfortunately YES it has been released on DVD - I think it was overcooked, microwaved and spent a few months in an asylum!!

Thanks for reading and your comments guys!!

I think I am the only person on the planet who actually liked this movie! But, I genuinely did. And, I had read so many bad reviews, I actually went into it expecting to hate it.

I don't know what it was that appealed to me so much. The surrealism, the campiness, the whimsy...who knows, but I dug it!

I haven't purchased it yet, but I'm sure if I wait long enough, it will end up in the bargain bin!!

Yay Natalie2!! I am so happy this film did find an audience. Just wasn't for me but Donnie Darko makes up for it in my opinion and if he is ever given money again to make another film I will be queuing up to see it. I did read somewhere someone had written that if he keeps trying to tell the same story over and over eventually he is going to make pure gold. You can probably pick it up on DVD on Ebay pretty cheap now.
Oooh here u go: $9- Australian including postage - ends in 22hrs EBay Auction

You really are addicted to Ebay, Jason! That's another thing we have in common. You'll have to keep your eye out for a cheap copy of Region 1 Watership Down on Ebay for me. I refuse to pay $50 for it, although it's looking more and more like I might have to! (sorry, that was a bit of a digression from the subject of this post!)

You can pretty much buy any DVD region and unlock your player. It is easy. Type into Google your DVD player type. Ie Sony LC150 etc then "unlock code". It is so easy to do. There are multiple sites that will come up. It will be as easy as opening the dvd tray, pressing 0 four times then pressing enter. Your DVD will then be region free (it will even come up on the screen telling you) and you can play anything on it from all over the world. I pretty much get all my dvd's from the US (Region 1) and I am in Australia (Region 4). So if that works you can buy:
Really Long Link
This will be $23- AU so about $20 US including postage!!
Hope this helps - send me a message if you can't work out the unlocking of the DVD player.
