Beloved Australia actor Bud Tingwell has died in Melbourne this morning, at the age of 86. To me he was the Grandpops of Australian acting and his loss will sadden a country - you will be missed Bud - thanks for what you gave us over your many years.
Tingwell had been suffering from prostate cancer, and passed away in a Melbourne hospital with family by his side.
Tingwell appeared in over 100 films after making his debut in 1946 as a control tower officer in the film, Smithy.
He caught the attention of Hollywood in 1952, winning the role of Lt. Harry Carstairs, in The Desert Rats, alongside Chips Rafferty.
He appeared on several popular television shows in the UK and Australia throughout the 1960s and 70s, before disappearing from the spotlight during the 1980s and early-90s.
He underwent a career resurgence in 1993, following a satirical appearance in the D-Generation's The Late Show. He would later feature as kind-hearted QC Lawrence Hammill in the 1997 hit film The Castle, which was produced by the D-Generation's Rob Sitch, Tom Gleisner, Santo Cilauro and Jane Kennedy.
The Castle, starring Michael Caton, went on to become one of the most popular Australian films of all time.
After the success of The Castle, he took on roles in The Craic, The Dish and Changi.
He also had a recurring guest role on Channel Ten soap, Neighbours.
In recent years, Tingwell has been a big online presence, launching his own website in 2006, which signed up 500 registered users in just its first week.
On 5 October 2006 he launched his first blog, on which he frequently expressed his views on TV, film, theatre, reality TV and acting in general.

That's one hell of a list of acting gigs. How many actors these days could boast a list like it?

It was horrible news.
It was really bizarre - mum and I were talking about films and how we were not fans of The Castle - I hung up the phone and the first thing I hear on the radio is Bud Tingwell passes. Spooky.
He was always a comforting actor with real presence.
Janet - the body of work is amazing - most actors when they get to his age can hope for accomplishments like these.
Morgan - unfortunately yes.
