ROCK OF AGES: A Review

So much fun
Rock of Ages tells the story of small town girl Sherrie and city boy Drew, who meet on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood dreams. Their rock 'n' roll romance is told through the heart-pounding hits of Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Whitesnake, and more.
My god this film was fun - it brought back so many memories of all the songs I loved and danced to and vomited to while drinking myself into young teenage stupor. It was a laugh out loud film that managed to be quite nostalgic and I wish I had heard of the musical when it was out - would love to see this one live as the stage performance.
Not only is the film about a teenage romance it is also about the end of an era, the birth of a new one and the battle between Rock and Prude
And the thing that makes this film is the abundance of so much talent - every character is played by the most superb actors - I loved them all - including Heyman (the monkey
).
Firstly, for me, there is Diego Boneta as Drew Boley, the pin up boy of the film who I am now in love with, he was so incredibly gorgeous, loveable and talented on the stage that I would expect him to rise through the acting ranks and arrive as a star very soon. Then he is matched perfectly with his onscreen love interest, Julianne Hough as Sherrie, and I loved this Charlie's Angels looking young lady who was the innocent of the film and from who's perspective we saw most of the film. Loved her - BUT THERE IS A BIG BUT - she looks identical to Hayden Panettiere (you know - the cheerleader from Heroes) that she made a fool of me - I was certain half the time that it was Panettiere and then I doubted myself and I kept this confusing internal dialogue going with myself the whole film that I probably missed enjoying most of her performance - then when the credit rolled I was like "oh" - nice work Hough
But these two are good and have great performances but they are in this film with acting royalty and the royalty shines through. Firstly there is Mr Tom Cruise in one of his funniest performances I have seen - besides his crazy performance in Tropic Thunder this one will have you in nearly as much stitches - he owns rock god man whore and I am loving his character performances. Then Catherine Zeta Jones is brilliant but under-utilised - I wanted so much more of her - ever since she was in Chicago I have wanted more and more of her in a musical and she does that preppy rich woman on a mission thing perfectly and her secret had me giggling.
Then my two heroes of the film - if the previous mentioned weren't enough - Alec Baldwin and especially Russell Brand - they are like the two elder gentlemen from The Muppets - although these two are rock addled and constantly pissed and completely freaking insane - I just loved them and realised I love Russell Brand more and more. He is just so goddamn loveable.
And I have to also mention two great actors that have lesser roles. Paul Giamatti - the guy is a chameleon and can act anything he wants - just saw him in Win Win last week and now this - he is awesome. And finally - Malin Ackerman - who plays Constance Sacks, the uptight interviewer who crumbles to Jaxx's sexual ooze
I love Akerman - she kissed me at the Watchmen interview and I will forever love her hahaha.
Now this film is fun and should only be watched if you want to have a laugh, see some fine bloody acting and embrace your inner 80's head banging converted pop child. The story is ok and probably not the greatest musical ever told on film - but you know what - who gives a shit - it is hysterically funny and I just wanted to be in it - I would play either Sherrie or Heyman
Rock of Ages is out now and is worth a jolly 8 out of 10 for me.
