SEX AND THE CITY (2008) $15-
I was not a huge fan of the TV show - I would maybe watch it once every month or two if it was on when I got home from work or being out. I always loved Samantha - the big slut, she just kept me laughing. But really, I did not give a damn about the show.
So - I sat through close to two and half hours this morning and have to say it is PURELY BLOODY SENSATIONAL!!!!! I just love love loved it!!!
Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), successful author and everyone's favorite fashion icon-next-door, is back, her famously sardonic wit intact and sharper than ever, as she continues to narrate her own story about sex, love and the fashion-obsessed single women in New York City.
Sex and the City finds Carrie, Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) four years after the hit HBO series ended, as our favorite femmes fashionables continue to juggle jobs, friendships and relationships while they start to navigate motherhood, marriage and Manhattan real estate... some of them may even -- brace yourself -- brave other boroughs outside Manhattan.
OK - enough with the pics already. LOL
The film is shot so beautifully and it captures a world none of us will ever be able to afford but can dream about. Every singe frame is so colorful and sharp - the cinematography is wonderful. The story is absolutely perfect and from what I have read stays true to the HBO TV show. The ladies as always are brilliant. SJP is just beautiful and looks so good with brown hair, her narration is soothing and I quite enjoyed it even though I was going in ready to despise it from some of the overseas reviews I have read. Kim Cattrall I found just getting too old for this. She has THE most beautiful body (something close to a 20yr olds) but she is now like a Monet. Looks fabulous from a distance. I also found her necessity to throw in her regular sex calls just a bit too much but I still loved her and NO-ONE can make sushi look so good. Kristin Davis was by far my favourite in the film, she is just so beautiful and has most of the comic relief. And Cynthia Nixon was great - I was never a fan of hers and always looked at her as the ugly one from the bunch (I know - me mean, not something I planned, just what I did) but she looks amazing in the film and looks better with age. AND - Jennifer Hudson is great in this - make sure you listen to those vocals over the credits, sensational. Oh and I can't forget BIG - I now completely understand the female attraction to him - he is one charismatic man. Not quite as HOT as Samantha's neighbor though. Hehe, you'll see ladies!!
One thing that actually made me cry - who am I kidding, I bawled like a baby through most of the film with laughter, with sadness, with envy but most of all at the strength of the character's friendships. I wish my friends and I were as close as this and would drop anything at any time of the day for each other. It was beautiful - OMG, do I need a Kleenex again!!
The fashions are just amazing - some of the attire Carrie wears had vomit rising in my mouth but most of it is purely stunning. The clothing is pretty much another character of the film that performs extremely well. I am not a fashion aficionado but I WANT CARRIE'S CLOSET NOW - It's bigger than my entire bloody house!! I hate you Bradshaw!! LOL
Trivia: 1) Victoria Beckham was offered a cameo role but had to turn it down due to scheduling conflicts with Spice Girls tour rehearsals. 2) Filmed in the same studio space, Silvercup Studios in Queens, as the original HBO series. 3) The film originally was slated for production shortly after the end of the TV series in 2004. But production was halted when Kim Cattrall pulled out of the film after being unable to reach a salary agreement with HBO. An agreement was finally reached in 2007 which included a series deal for Cattrall. 4) Carrie's famous desk is now a part of the Smithsonian permanent collection. Michael Patrick King, the director, wrote to the directors of the institution, pleading to have the desk back to recreate Carrie's apartment.
OK - One more:
This is the ultimate chick flick and so smart to be released now - it has that whole Devil Wears Prada feel with nice people and I think this is something female audiences crave the world around. This is the film for all the females out there to grab all their gal pals and gay mates, book a premium seat where you can drink, and down a few bottles of champagne while watching and crying. Or if you are a straight male with a female partner and you want some MAJOR brownie points then book your seats now!!! This is going to be one of the biggest films for a while and is going to eat Indy alive. Totally AWESOME and can't wait for a sequel: $15-

Dare I hope Hollywood hasn't brutalised SATC beyond recognition? I was relieved when you said the sharp wit was there, though I haven't seen any myself in the clips floating about. My impression so far is a re-hashing of material with very stilted, self-aware comedy. The only thing I have seen still pushing the boundaries so far is the fashion. I hope there is more to it.
I will probably cry like a baby at first, simply because I am overwhelmed after such a long wait, but I hope it leaves more of an impression - preferably good - than the shock of long-awaited big screen glitz.
Otherwise, I will have to be treated for emotional trauma. Lol.

Journeywoman - I so hope you like as much as I did. Was not at the premiere. I run a projection room for a cinema and as we have some important bookings and because the film is going to be so HUGE I screencheck everything to ensure nothing stuffs up for you guys. Let me know what you think.
Thanks everyone for commenting!!

"This is going to be one of the biggest films for a while and is going to eat Indy alive." Haha... that's awesome! I saw Indiana Jones and it was a bit of a disappointment, maybe I'll watch this now
