Welcome to Salty Popcorn - my site dedicated to expressing my opinion on films. Most of the reviews I read in the paper make me angry that they are either all so negative or I completely disagree with them. So now it's my turn. I hope you enjoy it and if you do sign up for updates on the left hand side. Thanks for stopping in!! Also, be sure to check out my other blogs www.sydneytable.com and http://www.orble.com/total-randomness/ PLEASE NOTE: My scoring of films is now based on an "Out of 10" score. My Sister's Keeper ($14-)

: SADDEST MOVIE EVER MADE

My Sister's Keeper ($14-)

This movie is just cruel and manipulative. Sure, it's based on one of the saddest family tales imaginable but the director Nick Cassevetes (The Notebook) conducts this film purely to pull people's heartstrings and make them cry. In The Notebook I cried (hell, I cry in Kleenex commercials ) but in The Notebook it is based on a superb romance tale spanning generations but My Sister's Keeper is PURE SAD. You start crying near the start, you stop crying after the credits and towards the end you get to cry so hard you are sobbing - all I could hear on quiet moments was people blowing their noses and this wasn't swine related.

My Sisters Keeper

Sara and Brian are living an idyllic life with their young son and daughter, Jesse and Kate, when they receive heartbreaking news that leads them to make an unorthodox choice in order to save Kate's life. Their decision eventually raises both ethical and moral questions, ultimately setting off a court case that reveals surprising truths and challenges everyone's perceptions of love and loyalty, giving new meaning to the definition of healing. Thanks to Warner Bros.

My Sisters Keeper, Abigail Breslin, Sofia Vassilieva, Evan Ellingson

This story deals with a massive ethical question - how far would you go to save a child? Think about it - where would you stop. I can hear most of you going "I would do anything" but when you think about it would you consider having another child that is a perfect donor match in every way thanks to genetic manipulation. Would you then from birth use this child as "spare parts" to save your sick child. Do you then love the new child or is that child second or third fave? And do you consider what you are doing as cruelty to your child? The book deals with this in larger quantities from what I have read about it but the movie touches on it Hollywood style while allowing the film to lend itself more for the family and emotional drama of the story. This film has Oprah written all over it - I could see an entire Oprah special where everyone gets a free family holiday. But this element of the film lets it down - this could have been a very serious film about these ethical dillemnas and more when the younger child decides to sue the parents for the rights to her own body. When you hear what was done to her in a list form it is horrific and nealry considered torture. But she really doesn't mind because it is all she is used to and it is to keep her favourite person alive.

My Sisters Keeper, Abigail Breslen, Evan Ellingson

The acting in this drama is quite brilliant. Alec Baldwin has a small part and is admirable as always, same goes for Jason Patric who's small emotional silent displays are quite unnerving - the scene where he watches Kate come down the stairs for a formal is powerful, Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine grown up a bit) is enjoyable to watch and comes across as a little adult, I really enjoyed Evan Ellingson as Jesse and look forward to seeing him more on film - he lights up the camera and shows the heartache the family as a whole suffers. Cameron Diaz needs to do more drama - she is great in this, a few years ago this film would have starred Jodie Foster and been all about the mum and not the family but Cameron delivers well and never tries to lead the film. Joan Cusack as Judge De Salvo nearly steals the show with her brief performance and her silence speaks louder than words - I just LOVE her. But the gong must go to one of the best teenage performances I have seen in years. Sofia Vassilieva is just brilliant and threw her all in for this part. She is delicate, plays sick so well and has the tenderness to rip your heart out. I can see some awards or at least nominations coming her way this year and she deserves them all.

My Sisters Keeper, Cameron Diaz, Sofia Vassilieva

Trivia thanks to IMDB:
1) Elle and Dakota Fanning were originally set to play Anna and Kate Fitzgerald, but bowed out after Dakota reportedly refused to shave her head, as required for the part.
2) Sofia Vassilieva shaved her hair and eyebrows off in order to play the role of Kate Fitzgerald. Vassilieva described it as being the least she could do to understand Kate's pain. Due to filming in a T.V. show as well as the movie, Vassilieva's long hair was turned into a wig for her.

My Sisters Keeper, Evan Ellingson

There has been a lot of argumentative comments on blogs about the massive changing of the ending of the book and while I thought the changing of the Harry Potter movie ending was appalling I am glad this film story was altered. The book ending would have cinema patrons slashing their wrists - at least, thankgod this has an ending that will allow you to leave the theatre without being covered in blood. I don't wish to mention it because of the spoiler nature of the tale.

My Sisters Keeper, Cameron Diaz, Sofia Vassilieva

Be prepared to raise the price of stocks in Kleenex and without being sexist - this is not for males, this is the ultimate chick flick that deals with something that tears a family apart while making it stronger than ever. Out Now and worth $14-

I really enjoyed the book (and cried all the way through). I would like to see the movie to see how it compares, but I might wait until DVD so I can sit at home by myself and not wail at strangers

Wilson - I hope you like it - let me know what you think after you have seen it!

Helen - the end may piss u off a bit, but for me they stopped the film before the tale went too far and I wish I waited until DVD - I nearly walked out because I was crying so hard. I had to look away a few times just to get my bearings.

Tommy - you are too easy to get revved up. I love messing with you. I never thought you were a pussie - I just knew what your reaction would be. You know me - I cry in bloody trailers - haha

Thanks for the comments ladies and gents.
