VISUAL SPLENDOUR
Directed by first time director Rupert Sanders is the latest take on a fairy tale by first time writer Evan Daugherty. The fairy tale is obvious - it's in the title stupid
OK - here we have a grande visual splendour version of Snow White with a modern Twilightish take on it.
The first thing I noticed about the film was the visual splendour of it - this is probably the best looking film since Avatar. It is all encompassing with it's attention to every frame - I was spellbound. For the first 30 or so minutes I could not take my eyes off the screen and my jaw was hanging agape and I was having that little "yeeeeeeeeeee" moment internal squeal of delight.
I was thoroughly enjoying all the acting. Kristen Stewart will forever be Bella but she was noticeable in this and she can be so beautiful with amazing cheek bones but I still have issues with her as a real person - I have seen so many pics of her giving the bird to the public or papz. She has way too much attitude and it comes across in her roles because you find it difficult in believing her as an innocent. But that being said I did support her in the role, I rooted for her and got the shits when things didn't go her way.
Charlize Theron was just stunning and a spectacular looking witch bitch. But I wasn't the greatest fan of her playing the role. She did it well and yelled most of her lines but I ended up feeling sorry for her and I wanted to see anger and I wanted to hate her, I needed to hate her. Did they soften the film for ratings? Because she should have been a bigger bitch!
Chris Hemsowrth stole the show for me, he is just going from strength to strength in his films and he is a Hollywood star - his looks are beyond compare and he is the Australian man that Mel Gibson made famous and Russell Crowe continued on with in Gladiator - he will be a household name and will have the pick of every big film to come out. He is superb - his only problem that I can forgive in this film - his inability to stick to a continuity in his accents. He felt Irish, Scottish, American and a bit of Ozzie in different scenes - but hey - he is still better than Sam Worthington
I also thoroughly enjoyed Sam Claflin and have a bit of a Sam crush going on.
Now after about 45mins of the film I could see things slipping big time. I did not see the need for the love triangle, did Prince even have a need to be in the film? I would be sad to see him go but thought a concentration on just Snow and Hunty would have been good - you know facing adversity together brings them together. And I am sorry to say it but the dwarves were an EPIC EPIC fail. Firstly there was no need for them to use and shrink big name actors, and the Bob Hoskins "Seer Dwarf" was just bloody stupid and laughable - it made me angry. I did not like how they changed the dwarves from the original story - this was my biggest letdown.
And then there was the warfare - the horse riding on the beach was superb, but I did not think there was enough riders to ride towards the castle - they were being bombarded with flaming stuff, shot at by arrows and by the time they reached the castle there should have been nearly no one left to actually do battle - but THEN - the organisation of the witches forces was woeful - why didn't they just walk in?? It was disappointing!! And the pre war speech from the resurrected Snow was forehead slappingly woeful! I was cringing.
I appear to have worked myself up over it - and I think it was because it started so strong and finally I had a fantasy film in the vein of Lord of the Rings that could have again changed my life but then it slid on its ass and kept on sliding. The film has enough in the acting and the outstanding visuals to keep its head above the water but besides that it is very average. Sadly I only award this one 6 out of 10 Huntsman's Swords

Agreed great entertainment though - worse things to do on a rainy day or when you are bored.
AMY - Anne Hathaway would be ideal as a Snow White but she already did The Princess Diaries and that was her best fantasy - but get ready for Les Mis - that will be awesome!!
