The Bodies in the Barrels are Coming
Category: Trailers
Fourteen Australian films will premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival next year, including a controversial movie about the bodies in barrels murders, SNOWTOWN.
More than 140 films from 40 countries will be screened when the Film Festival is held from February 24-March 6.
The compelling new Australian film SNOWTOWN will be released nationally on 19 May through Madman Entertainment.
Directed by Justin Kurzel, SNOWTOWN is the first feature film to be produced by Warp Films Australia and marks the arrival of a major filmmaking talent. He has made a film as starkly confronting as it is beautifully controlled, with impeccable performances from a local cast of predominately first-time actors. SNOWTOWN will premiere at the Bigpond Adelaide Film Festival.
When 16-year-old Jamie is introduced to a charismatic man, a friendship begins. As the relationship grows so do Jamie's suspicions, until he finds his world threatened by both his loyalty for, and fear of, his newfound father figure, John Bunting: Australia's most notorious serial killer.
This film has taken a leaf out of Animal Kingdom's book and is similar in style, story, casting and basically everything. The only difference is this one is based on fact - and this could go either way. Will people be keen for more of this style from Australia or will they be over it. Will people from Australia want to see how this story unfolded or stay away from it? I think we are all twisted freaks and will all be keen to look on like we are driving past a car accident.
Director Katrina Sedgwick says there will obviously be criticism from some people for including the movie SNOWTOWN. It has already started online with abundant criticism for even making the film, but if they can make films about all the Underbelly Criminals then I am looking forward to this film. It has not effected me, the murders in SNOWTOWN, but I can see any film that is based on fact will effect people still around to have been there. The controversy and criticism is not new and if anything it will bring more interest to the film.
"I think it's a very complex and important exploration of a part of our history, of Australia's history, that needs to be told," Kurzel said.
"It's been told so powerfully, predominantly by South Australian people, in a way that is not incautious. It is intelligent," she said.
Justin Kurzel directed the movie based on the Snowtown killings in South Australia and it stars new talents Daniel Henshall and Lucas Pittaway.
