Colter Stevens an American Army helicopter pilot whose last memory is flying in Afghanistan, wakes up on a commuter train. But he discovers he has assumed the identity of another man. 8 minutes later the train explodes and Stevens finds himself in some kind of pod. He then talks to someone named Goodwin who tells him he has to go back and find who the bomber is. He is sent back and is going through the whole thing again and tries to find who the bomber is but fails and the bomb goes off and he is back in the pod. He is sent back again and still can't find out anything. When he comes back he asks what is going on, Goodwin and Rutledge, the scientist in charge tells him he is part of a project that can put someone in another person's consciousness during the last 8 minutes of their life. Stevens says why doesn't he just stop the bomb, he is then told that he is not going back in time but placed in the moment so he can find out who the bomber is and if there are any other targets...
Duncan Jones, also known as David Bowie's little son, has followed up his 2009 Moon with yet another sensational and nearly flawless film. For a film with limited marketing and not much hype it brings a non stop action suspense film with heart to the screen. I wasn't expecting much and to be honest I didn't even know it was Duncan Jones until the opening credits but so far he has hit 2 out of 2 flawless films out of the park. I preferred Moon as a film but Source Code had one thing up it's sleeve that would always be a winner for me. Jake Gyllenhaal. LOVE LOVE LOVE HIM.
Jones has managed to create a non stop story into a combination plot of Groundhog Day, The Matrix and Speed and when I think of another Groundhog Day storyline I groan but in this film it just works brilliantly and it succeeds because in every single story rebirth it has changed slightly and has the skill of a great script and Gyllenhaal who manages to bring his "somewhat" quirkiness, humor and even heroic masculinity to the role.
Ben Ripley has written easily his best work after being known for Species 3 and 4
He has combined nearly every element into one film. Drama, check, action aplenty, check, romance, check, sci-fi, check. It has the works and it all is done simply and highly effectively. I am actually very keen to see what he writes next.
The only thing I didn't like was Jeffrey Wright (Casino Royale, Shaft, Quantum of Solace). I just found his role poorly miscast and he did that superior intellect over the top. Originally I thought he would be the good guy but he turned out to be an ass and I had no idea why he had to be physically impaired. I liked the background support cast from the train and they reminded me of all the support cast from Speed - same set-up - trapped on fast moving vehicle with imminent disaster approaching. I liked the subtle little life stories we got from them.
Michelle Monaghan has a limited and not overly difficult role and she plays it so carefree and relaxed it is brilliant - she is actually incredibly fun and loving and makes the perfect support for Gyllenhaal. Their chemistry is brilliant and if I didn't think and hope Jake played for my team I would love to see them as an item in real life - they just work so well together.
Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air, Departed) was also great and played the ultimate professional professionally. I would have liked to have seen more of her. She has a great onscreen presence.
Source Code is out now and as I have written this review so bloody late it will no doubt be out on DVD and Blu Ray very soon. It is the sleeper film of the year that is a great little surprise package. Worth an easy 8 out of 10. See it!
