Star Trek Looks Sensational
December 3rd 2008 08:32
I had the absolute privilege of attending a screening this morning for the upcoming Star Trek film. After a brief introduction from the head of Paramount Australia, who admtted to being with the company for so long he had been present for the release of all Star Trek films, handed us over to a pre-recorded presentation from J.J. Abrams who could not attend due to finishing the film in the US.
Firstly - the cast is sensational:
Chris Pine as Kirk, this was an odd choice - he has not done much besides a few TV shows and then a role in Smoking Aces but he is going to pull it off and thankgod we actually have a sexy incredibly HOT Kirk (minus the funny voice). He has that tough guy, always in trouble but butter still melts in his mouth thing going.
Zachary Quinto as Spock - perfect, you wil know Quinto as the evil villain Silar in Heroes.
Eric Bana as Nero - we all know Eric but best as the ear chopping freak known as Chopper.
Simon Pegg as Scotty - (he's the one at the back of the pic) more casting brilliance that also provides comic relief.
Winona Ryder as Amanda Grayson - didn't get to see much footage of Winona but if I can remember and hope I am not incorrect - isn't she Kirk's first true love interest? But you all know Winona - from red hot super actress wanted by all to clepto - and hopefuly this will mark a great comeback for her.
Karl Urban as Leonard 'Bones' McCoy - I so did not recognise him, he looks way more bookish in this trying to emualte the original McCoy but Karl is best known for smaller roles and some to be forgotten. Pathinder anyone? But great in Bourne Supremacy and the Lord of the Rings films.
John Cho as Sulu - he looks good in this role and hopefully will break from his more known role as one half of Harold and Kumar.
Zoe Saldana as Uhura - she is smoking!! My fave role she ever did was in Centre Stage as the winning balerina.
At this morning's screening we got a small talk from J.J. who then showed us 4 amazing scenes from the film that were complete. The first one was meeting Kirk as a young party boy drinking himself into fun and heaps of trouble who gets a mentor talk and dared to join Star Fleet. The second scene was quite funny with Kirk being smuggled onto the ship as he could not get on the normal way due to getting into so much trouble at Star Fleet Academy. McCoy finds a loop hole that allows him to come on board, where thank the stars if he did not the entire crew would be dead. The third scene was between Kirk and the very original Spock (Leonard Nimoy) who hook up with Scottie (Simon Pegg) to put the "transporter" into its first use. Spock is back in time and Scottie has not invented the tranpsorter yet - this is totally prior to "Beam me up Scottie". And the last scene is a high octane sky diving (to the max) scene in an attempt to disable an evil Romulan machine.
I don't want to go into too much detail as you need to see it when it comes out in Autumn )May 7th at this stage) - but I will say that this looks like the most sharp and all rounded Trek film ever made. It appears to be the best film re-birthing I have witnessed and this film is not for Trekkies - it is for everyone!!! It maintains it's Star Trek accuracy to keep Trekkies happy, it gives so much high energy action I broke out in a sweat of anticipation and it builds strong character development to give the film a dimension beyond most of the standard mindless schlopp we have seen of late. JJ has done what George Lucas has tried to do now 4 times - reboot a franchise or two succesfully.
I am so excited about this film's release I may vomit. Bring it on!!
And I had to do it!
LIVE LONG AND PROSPER!!

As a long time trekkie freak fan (probably long before your were a twinkle in your Daddies eye), and an eclectic oldie who enjoys the Next Generation of films (pardon the pun) : I am looking forward to seeing where this one boldly goes ...
Snippets, look and sound good so far.
For me, it may well highlight Gene Roddenberry as being the first true time lord (George Lucas being the other one), because my intuition tells me this film will mark a start of a new generation of time tripping youngsters from the naughties ... travelling way back through time to the 60s and 70s ~ hiring out the originals and creating another renaissance?
Time will tell.
Hope you can keep it down!
A well written post.

Fingers crossed it works and JJ seems like the right director from this generation to do it.
