The Dark Knight ($16-)
IN HONOR OF HEATH LEDGER
The most hyped film of the year since Indiana Jones having Sex in the City!! And this one totally deserves all the hype it receives. I would be correct in saying this is the best superhero film of ALL TIME!!!
"Christian Bale once again embodies the man behind the mask in The Dark Knight. The film reunites Bale with director Christopher Nolan and takes Batman across the world in his quest to fight a growing criminal threat. With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), Batman has been making headway against local crime ...
... until a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker (Heath Ledger) unleashes a fresh reign of chaos across Gotham City. To stop this devious new menace - Batman's most personal and vicious enemy yet - he will have to use every high-tech weapon in his arsenal and confront everything he believes."
We all know the story of Heath Ledger post filming this role and I don't need to explain it again. Rumors have been rife that he would receive a posthumous Oscar nomination and I whole heartedly support this decision. He is by far the best actor on screen at this stage and no one to date this year has beaten him in the acting department. Whereas when Jack Nicholson played The Joker, we got to see Jack being Jack, in this role we don't see Heath at all, we see THE JOKER. Some scenes towards the end of the film are absolutely chilling. There is the one scene also in the trailer that has a maddened Joker shaking his head outside a moving police car like a dog, I am pretty sure this is one of the many scenes shot in Imax and it is by far my favourite piece of cinematography from the entire film. It was brief but summed him up totally. There is also a scene with him hanging upside down from a building exchanging dialogue with Batman that is pure chilling. He is laughing in the face of death and the scene had me gasping! He has so many amazing one liners and delivers them like the master he became in his later films. One thing I am pissed about is NO mention at all in relation to "In Honor of Heath Ledger" etc in the film at all!
While so much of the film has been marketed towards Heath Ledger, deservedly so, I found the entire cast totally brilliant. Christian Bale's performance is subtle and just as demanding as Heath's role. While Heath got to be sadistic and over the top, to suit his character, Christian has to be an internal person who has to emote with facials and less with lines. This he does with his usual performance professionalism. Aaron Eckhart is great as Two Face but his performance finally kicks off once the prosthetics and CGI come into play and it leaves him to be more of a minor player. Maggie is OK, but her role is more of a small bit part romance interest. Micheal Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman are probably three of the greatest support actors that any of the leads would be lucky to have and they add maturity and total cred to the film.
While I could sit through a five hour version with total amazement, I think the public may find it a bit long and while I would allow a young child to watch an M rated Harry Potter film I would not allow a young child to watch this, it is way too dark and sinister and I would have thought an MA15 rating would have been more suitable.
The film, I also found, lacks a defined climax, it has about two or three of them and once I actually thought they were winding down the movie and then they sprang a new storyline on me. I loved it but it may bewilder a few people.
Now I am totally cheating here but every bit of trivia on IMDB was way to good to leave out. So below courtesy of IMDB is the total trivia section on this film:
* Matt Damon was Christopher Nolan's first choice for the role of Harvey Dent but turned it down. Before Aaron Eckhart was cast in the part, other actors considered included Hugh Jackman, Ryan Phillippe, Liev Schreiber and Josh Lucas.
* As a joke, one bat suit was made with nipples, as in Batman & Robin (1997). It was presented to Christian Bale as the real bat suit, but he knew instantly it was a joke, having seen a few design pictures during preproduction. He did pose for some publicity photos in the "nipple" suit.
* This is the first Batman film to not have "Batman" in the title.
* Christopher Nolan has a son named Rory, for whom the working title of the film ("Rory's First Kiss") was named.
* Robin Williams, Lachy Hulme, Paul Bettany, and Adrien Brody all expressed interest for the role of the Joker before Heath Ledger was cast.
* When asked, "Why Heath Ledger as the Joker?" Christopher Nolan said, "Because he's fearless."
* Dwight Yoakam turned down two roles in this movie. Originally he was offered the part of a cop; then he was offered to play a banker who had dealings with the Joker (Heath Ledger). Yoakam passed on both roles because he was working on a Buck Owens tribute album.
* Turning down a salary estimated at between $1 million and $2 million
o an increase over the roughly $1 million she was believed to have earned for Batman Begins (2005) - Katie Holmes chose not to reprise her role as Rachel Dawes. This was due to what was described as 'scheduling conflicts'.
* Before Maggie Gyllenhaal replaced Katie Holmes in the role of Rachel Dawes, both Rachel McAdams and Emily Blunt were rumored for the part.
* While filming on the streets of Chicago in April 2007, the filming was carried out under the fake movie title "Rory's First Kiss". Fliers regarding the filming carried this fake title, complete with a fake "RFK" logo for the movie and an address for the film's production offices.
* One of the extra's military uniforms has the name "Philo" on it, after the film's extras casting director, Joan Philo.
* On Thanksgiving weekend, 2007, fake four page tabloid size "Gotham Times" newspapers were distributed at various public events. Headlined "City at War - Batman Saves Entire Family", every article teased events in the film, and everything in the handout was geared toward the film, including the weather ("Gloomy and overcast...”) and advertisements for Gotham National Bank, the Gotham Girl Guides and recruitment for the Gotham Police Department.
* To prepare for his role as the Joker, Heath Ledger lived alone in a hotel room for a month, formulating the character's psychology, posture and voice (the last one he found most difficult to do). He started a diary, in which he wrote the Joker's thoughts and feelings to guide himself during his performance. He was also given Alan Moore's comic "Batman: The Killing Joke" and "Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth" to read. Ledger also took inspiration from A Clockwork Orange (1971)'s Alex and Sid Vicious.
* Director Christopher Nolan and co-writers Jonathan Nolan and David S. Goyer decided not to explore the origins of the Joker in order to portray the character as "absolute."
* Christopher Nolan cites the film Heat (1995) as a major influence on this movie.
* Christopher Nolan shot part of the film in the IMAX format. Nolan had wanted to shoot in IMAX for 15 years, and even now wishes he could have shot the entire film in IMAX, as he felt "if you could take an IMAX camera to Mt Everest or outer space, you could use it in a feature movie." Nolan shot in IMAX four major action sequences and quiet dramatic scenes which he thought would be visually fascinating.
* Off-duty Chicago Police Officers along with Officers from Elyria OH, Hammond IN, Buffalo Grove IL and Joliet IL played Gotham Police officer extras.
* Elaborate, interactive marketing campaigns were launched in the months leading up to the release of this film. One of which was an event at the 2007 San Diego Comic-con called "Why So Serious", which involved fans following clues hidden around the city. The legions of Joker-painted fans ended up congregating in the street across from the convention center, where one of their numbers was welcomed into a black Escalade (with Gotham license plates) that had just pulled up. After a moment the fan started screaming and the SUV sped away. Later that day, a "Gotham City newspaper" was circulated reporting that a man believed to be the Joker was found beaten to death. Included were "crime scene photos" of the fan who had gotten into the Escalade, and a mention that he was found with a playing card in his hand, on which was scribbled "See you in December."
* Heath Ledger's sudden death on January 22, 2008 prompted immediate speculation as to the state of this film. Late the same day, Warner Bros. released a statement declaring that Ledger had completed all his scenes and post-production work, thus making the Joker the actor's final completed appearance in a film.
* It's Sir Michael Caine's opinion that Heath Ledger beat the odds and topped Jack Nicholson's Joker from Batman (1989): "Jack was like a clown figure, benign but wicked, maybe a killer old uncle. He could be funny and make you laugh. Heath's gone in a completely different direction to Jack, he's like a really scary psychopath. He's a lovely guy and his Joker is going to be a hell of a revelation in this picture." Caine bases this belief on a scene where the Joker pays a visit to Wayne Manor. He'd never met Ledger before, so when Ledger arrived and performed he gave Caine such a fright he forgot his lines.
* Aaron Eckhart described his portrayal of Harvey Dent as simultaneously coming from and being apart from the same world as Batman (Dent is the white knight of Gotham, as opposed to the Dark Knight). His challenge was "looking for the similarities and the tension between the two; to find what's similar to Batman and then what's opposite to him." Eckhart prepared for his role by studying split personalities.
* Bruce Wayne develops and wears a new Batsuit in the film. This Batsuit was an improvement on the outfit from Batman Begins (2005), and made Christian Bale more comfortable and agile in his performance. It was constructed from 200 unique pieces of rubber, fibreglass, metallic mesh, and nylon (producing an impression of sophisticated technology), with elastic banding added for tightening the costume to fit Bale. The gauntlets had their razors made retractable and able to be fired. The suit's cowl was based on a motorcycle helmet and separated from the neck piece, allowing Bale to move his head left/right/up/down, and comes equipped with white eye lenses for when Batman turns on Bat-sonar.
* The Joker make-up was composed of three pieces of stamped silicone, which took less than an hour to apply to Heath Ledger on each day of shooting. Ledger described it as "new technology which is much quicker to apply than regular prosthetics;" he felt he was not wearing any make-up at all.
* Costume designer Lindy Hemming based the Joker's look around his personality, in which "he doesn't care about himself at all." Hemming was inspired by countercultural pop culture artists like Pete Doherty, Iggy Pop, and Sid Vicious. She avoided his design being vagrant, but made it scruffier and grungier, therefore making his movements slightly twitchier and edgier.
* An explosion was filmed at the Battersea Power Station in London. The fireball created calls from panic-stricken local residents, who assumed a terrorist attack was on the out-of-use Station.
* Nestor Carbonell who plays the Mayor in "The Dark Knight" coincidentally also played "Bat Manuel", a parody of Batman in the comic-based live action "The Tick" (2001) TV series.
* The Batman Comic Books "The Long Halloween", "The Killing Joke", "The Man Who Laughs" and the first two comics to feature the Joker character served as an influence on the film’s storyline.
* Jerry Robinson, one of the original creators of the Joker back in 1940, was hired as a consultant on the film (the Joker is to be portrayed according to his first two appearances in the comics, which Robinson was involved in). His "Batman" co-creator Bob Kane had earlier been hired as a consultant for Batman (1989).
* Due to the huge demand to see the trailer, Warner Bros. allowed fans to fill hundreds of theaters around the country to maximum capacity to watch the new trailer just days before it was set to debut with Iron Man (2008). Fans quickly filled the theater, watched the 2 minute 30 second trailer, and left.
* David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan collaborated on the story of the film. The script itself was written by Nolan and his brother Jonathon. After watching The Dark Knight, Goyer stated "I can't believe my name is on a movie this good".
* The Tumbler only gets one mile per gallon, and is powered by a Learjet engine. It has a top speed of around 140 miles per hour.
* Tickets for midnight screenings sold out so many weeks in advance that thousands of theaters across the US began to open 3 AM and 6 AM showings to accommodate moviegoers.
I would also like to ask, where was the Harry Potter and Terminator 4 TSR TRLS that had been mentioned that were meant to be attached to the front of the prints????
Sam will kill me if I don't mention how brilliant the score and music is in this film, it is the perfect accompaniment to the cinematography and art direction and me thinks they might get a little gold statue for it come Feb 09. But this is easy to see when you have James Newton Howard (7 Oscar nominations) and Hans Zimmer who went straight from writing the music for Kung Fu Panda onto this one and he has his own statue already. It's sensational.
There were three times in this film I actually launched out of my seat fist pumping into the air stating "Hell Yeah", scenes that I have not seen in films for a long time that amaze you at how marvelous this film is. I won't mention them now because you yourself must experience them. One thing that has started more hype amongst my fellow colleagues is "when is the next one and who should play certain roles?" I am up for a Jack Black Penguin, a Leonardo DiCaprio Riddler and a Rose McGowan Catwoman - what do you think?
This film is nearly perfect and you need to see it now!! Worth every cent at $16- or $25- at IMAX!!

The actors were, as you say, brilliant and Heath Ledger could well be a contender for the next Oscar nominations. His performance was out of this world.
I thought Maggie Gyllenhaal was wonderful too, more so because of how small her role is, she was still able to present a great character. She should have had more screentime, IMO.

interesting that it is based on Heat and that Ledgers performance made Caine forget his lines!

Morgan: I am stoked you read the whole thing!! Hehe I find the trivia when researching is the thing that interests me the most. I look forward to reading your review. I have been trying to find the Heat connection and I can't really see it. If it was based I think it became more than its inspiration.
Anonymous and everyone else: I stand corrected, after researching further I find that yes it does state: “In memory of our friends Heath Ledger & Conway Wickliffe“. For those of you who don’t know, Wickliffe is the special-effects technician who was killed last September in a stunt-car accident on the set of the Batman sequel. Now I watched the credits three times and never saw it so apologies for my incorrect information but maybe a) it was not printed on the Australian prints or b) it's written smaller than an ants nipple. So I will sit through the credits again just to check! "Liar" - mean and a tad harsh!
Thanks for reading guys and gals!!

Just saw The Dark Knight. Loved the review & the trivia.
I love Christian Bale. His performance in Empire Of The Sun is sublime, and his adult work is always brave and diverse. So for me to say I couldn't wait for Heath (The Joker) to be on screen is plaudits to that brilliant performance. Menacing. Each time he drew near another character you believed he was oh so eager to inflict pain. The constant evil in a world of flux.
Heath was just getting so damn good at his craft.
Have you ever seen the hidden British gem (starring Christian Bale) Equilibrium??

Ledger is chilling! I still crack up every time I think about the pencil magic trick.
And yes yes yes - I did watch Equilibrium quite a few years ago - it's the Matrixy sci fi isn't it?
Will have to hire out again.
I totally agree with Empire of the Sun - another thing we get to thank Spielberg for. For literally shaping Bale and discovering him and giving him to us all.

Also I love the way you review things. It's easier to comprehend exactly how you feel about the movie with the price rating.
Thanks!

I really thought a lot of the hype around Ledger's performance was because of his death but he really was magnificent and extremely chilling. You are so right when you said you looked at the screen and you didn't see the actor, you saw The Joker. So true.
The casting of Caine, Freeman and Oldman definitely give the film the necessary gravitas that you would expect from actors of such high calibre. I think Bale is by far the best Batman we've seen and I think it will be incredibly hard for them to come up with another villian as spine-chilling as Ledger's Joker.
As for actors in the other villain roles - let's just hope they don't cast Angelina Jolie as Catwoman, she is far too obvious and it would just ruin it. I think Guy Pearce would be a great Riddler.

Heath Ledger is totally amazing - I keep meaning to go and watch it again. Agree with Bale being the best. I want Michelle Pfeiffer back as Catwoman - she was awesome. I think Angelina maybe a bit old - can't see her as a Catwoman. Apparently rumors have started that it could be Casey Affleck as the Riddler with Philip Seymour Hoffman as a possible Penguin.
