The Losers - (6.5/10) - REVIEW BY SEAN
Batman, Spiderman, X-Men, Iron Man, Hulk, Avengers. Comic book movies are all the rage at the moment. Studios are turning them out faster than they can write cheques. And what does that mean for us? Originality? Forget it. True stories? Not a chance. No It means that week after week, we have ridiculous, over the top characters, action sequences and plot lines that can't be explained in any other way than, "that's what happens in the comic."
For those of you who have never picked up a comic book in your life (shame on you - there are some great ones), you have to share a cinema with large groups of geeky guys who know Clark Kent's real name better than their own. But never fear, for a new comic is here. It's called The Losers, a little known Vertigo (an imprint of DC Comics and publishers of more adult oriented material such as "V for Vendetta" and "A History of Violence") comic book written by Andy Diggle and illustrated by Jock.
The story goes; After being betrayed and left for dead, an elite US Special Forces team known as "The Losers", set out to seek revenge on the man who tried to kill them. The Leader, Clay (Jeffery Dean Morgan - Supernatural, Watchmen), is given an offer by a mysterious woman, Aisha (the super sexy Zoe Saldana - Star Trek, Avatar) to kill the man who ruined their lives, Max (Jason Patric - The Lost Boys, In The Valley of Elah). He takes the deal, and with The Losers (Jensen - Chris Evans, Roque - Iris Elba, Pooch - Columbus Short and Couger - Oscar Jaenada) in tow, the set out on an epic, explosive, action packed mission to stop Max dead in his tracks.
Jeffery Dean Morgan, probably best known for his role as 'The Comedian' in Watchmen, takes the reins as Clay, the leader of The Losers. Clay is troubled and at a loss by what happened in Bolivia, and he is prepared to do anything to get his and his teams lives back. Morgan plays the role well. He has that natural leader persona about him - see him as John Winchester in Supernatural - that made him the perfect choice for Clay. He also carries that "All-American-Hero" flag, and he reminds me a bit of John Wayne or Robert Redford. He is not a man to be messed with. But at the same time, as highlighted in the film, he has women troubles. Every time something bad has happened to him or his team it's because of a woman. Doesn't surprise me in the slightest.
The stunning Zoe Saldana provides the femme fatale of the film in the form of Aisha - the mysterious woman who shows up and offers Clay his life back. Zoe rules the screen in every scene she is in. Whether it's because she's so damn beautiful or because she's just a bloody good actress I don't know, but I do know this - "she is Volatile". I have loved Zoe in everything she has been in and this film is no exception. She first appears at a Bolivian cock fight (don't get excited yet fellas), and just like Clay, our ears prick up and we are in and rooting for her (wow, I'm sorry. I don't mean to keep saying things like that but I just can't help it).
The wonderfully talented Jason Patric is along for the ride as the bad guy Max, a super evil, super rich, Lex Luthor type villain (but with hair). I thought he was good, but seemed to play the character for a bit dumber than he really was. Max seems like he should be an evil genius, but Patric's Max seems more interested in being funny than being bad, and I think that's where I was a bit let down with the film. I'm a huge fan of Jason Patric, don't get me wrong. Normally he owns everything he is in but this just seemed like he wasn't all there.
But the honourable mention goes to Chris Evans (and future Captain America) as the tech wiz Jensen. He owns the entire film. Every scene he is in he steals. He is funny, engaging and downright awesome. If I were going into battle I would have Jensen on my team. There's not a lot I can say about him without giving away the film but he is just brilliant. "You like the angle of the dangle" was one of the funniest lines I have heard in any film in months.
Now, I know what you're thinking. This is just another Hollywood action flick. But I urge you to give it a chance. Whilst this film is not the greatest film ever made, it does give you a very cool, fun ride from the jungles of Bolivia to the concrete beaches of Los Angeles.
The Losers is a cool flick - albeit very much a popcorn flick - but well worth spending you hard earned dollars on if you're just after a bit of fun.
Salty's Notes: Firstly, thanks Sean - can't believe I went to Streetdance over this
You have sold me - I actually liked the look of the trailer - it looks like the fun and non pretentious version of upcoming ATeam. I also got to meet Jeffery Dean Morgan and thought he was one of the nicest actors I have ever met, that plus Zoe Saldana is so hot and looks just as good when not blue
And Mmmmmmmmm Chris Evans - me likes him hahahahaha

Deni - Chris Evans totally rocks!!! I even found him the best thing in Fantastic Four. He has a strong presence onscreen.
Amy - or a rainy cinema arvo - there is a lot of crap out at the moment, this one won't be that bad. I definitely will be reviewing Harry Brown - have been looking forward to it - will maybe try and watch it this weekend if I can.
Thanks for visiting guys and girls and have a kick ass day

Personally I'm still waiting for a big screen live action adaptation of the Archie comics. Who would play Archie Andrews? Jughead Jones? Reggie Mantle? Betty White? Veronica Lodge? Moose? Midge? The options are endless!! Why do I care? Cos I had a secret pubescent crush on Ronnie ...

I totally agree with you. Fantastic Four movies were horrible fluff.
The ONLY reason I saw the first Fantastic Four was because it grossed over $100 Mil when it came out and I figured it had to be something to it if people are seeing it.
Chris Evans' performance is the only thing that made it enjoyable.

I will take your advice Deni, and keep the expectations in check.
And, Rush is good stuff from Patric.
Surely Archie is only a matter of time, Bryn.
