The Love Guru ($11.50)
I was really surprised by this one. After reading nothing but loathsome reviews and seeing only a 15% rating on the tomato meter at www.rottentomatoes.com I was expecting utter diabolical elephant sized shit. But it's not! It's Mike Meyers, you shouldn't expect Schindler's List, you should expect pure comedic farce. I was nearly wetting myself in some of the high end toilet humor and big dick gags.
Pitka (Mike Myers) is an American who was left at the gates of an ashram in India as a child and raised by gurus. He moves back to the U.S. to seek fame and fortune in the world of self-help and spirituality. His unorthodox methods are put to the test when he must settle a rift between Toronto Maple Leafs star hockey player Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco) and his estranged wife.
After the split, Roanoke's wife starts dating L.A. Kings star Jacques Grande (Justin Timberlake) out of revenge, sending her husband into a major professional skid—to the horror of the teams' owner Jane Bullard (Jessica Alba) and Coach Cherkov (Verne Troyer). Pitka must return the couple to marital nirvana and get Roanoke back on his game so the team can break the 40-year-old "Bullard Curse" and win the Stanley Cup.
This is Mike Myers just being himself similar to Adam Sandler just being himself in Zohan with one difference. Mike Myers is funny - I actually walked out of Zohan after 20mins because it was appallingly bad. Mike has had many years away from the screen and I had missed his stupid humor. He is like a living Cartman from South Park, sure, not much of the humor is new but it's him and he can still draw a laugh - have any of Mike Myers' films ever received positive reviews? I doubt it. Jessica Alba is beautiful and fills her part well, but that's it, she's the pretty one - no talent required. Justin Timberlake is hysterical, and more so, I suppose, because it is Justin Timberlake doing it. He was a great choice for the role and one I never would have expected.
Romany Malco is also great as Darren Roanoke and he is one good looking lad! I was surprised to see Sir Ben Kingsley playing his part, anyone who wins an Oscar playing Gandhi I think does not belong in this style of film. But the funniest guy in the film, excluding Mike is Stephen Colbert as one of the sports commentators. What is it with sports commentators, I just find them hysterical. Oh, and I would be silly if I did not forget the guy Mike spends all his time being politically incorrect to. Verne Troyer aka Mini Me (from Austin Powers) is great and it's good to hear him talking in this film. He cops it the entire time from Mike. It is so wrong it hurt with laughter.
Check out these cameos:
* Mike Myers
* Mariska Hargitay
* Chris Rock
* Jessica Simpson
* Kanye West
* Val Kilmer
* Morgan Freeman (voice)
* Rob Blake
* Deepak Chopra
Watch this one if you are up for some Mike Myers fun, not if you want to watch a plot driven film with superb acting that will win a truckload of awards. And to end on some words of wisdom from the Guru Pitka: "If your Uncle Jack helped you off an elephant, would you help your Uncle jack off an elephant?" Hehe - Worth $11.50

I have been furious with Myers for not making another in the Austin Powers series...really love his characters in that!
However, I did see a short on this current effort and what slightly surprised and disappointed me, was Myers using the smae vocal inflections and even phrses he had Doctor Evil using!!
I would have thought he could have come up with totally original characters and not blur the lines between some of them.
At any rate, I am still looking forward to it, as Myers is a prodigious comedic talent, par excellence!!!!
cheers

Mike Myers hasn't really played a role like this for while so I might see it as his Austin Powers films (well the first two) are fantastic comedies. It's not like The Guru is it? I didn't mind that film because it was what I expected for a rom-com with entertaining but cliche jokes, but when it's Mike Myers you kind of raise the bar.

Fog: I would also love to see another Austin Powers film but all his characters are just him. If you saw "So I Married an Axe Murderer" years ago he basically talks like fat bastard from Austin as one of the characters and I suppose it's just the humor he can get from the different accents and inflections. He may also have thrown those inflections in for the very reason that people miss him and Austin so if you throw in a bit of the Austin characters you can ensure a certain amount of patronage. The Love Guru character and the Austin Powers characters were actually introduced to the world on the same day. At a stand up routine in NY I think he introduced both of these characters.
Sammy: You will love it unless you dislike it just to spite me!! It shits on Zohan and there is lots of silly comedy that you seem to piss yourself in. And yes there is some of that humor I love with people getting hurt. Poor Mini Me cops a hiding and it's so F'n funny!!
Nathan: Never saw The Guru - I doubt it would be similar, no one can be so humorously politically incorrect and make toilet humor so funny. I hope you like it!
Natalie: The running joke in the film is the size of JT's character's schlong. When he takes his pants off, not that you get to see it but his p - p hits the floor, it's meant to be that long. He would have been the last person I would have chosen to play the role and he surprised me with his comedy. He is great.
Spennies: Am heading over to check out your review right now. Glad you liked it!!
Viva La Vez: You will definitely get some laughs out of it, promise.
Hugs Y'all!
